HERZ supports education
The history of a heating appliance
e original heating used coal. Aer
refurbishment the central heating was
run using oil-fired boilers, and aer
the decommissioning of the boiler it
was connected to the district heating
network. Up to its conversion in 2004,
the radiator heating system was not
controlled.
Mollardgasse vocational
college: Sanitation
engineering for apprentices
It all began in 2003 in the historic listed
buildings with the plumbing of heating
equipment using HERZ products, and now
comparative data are available for 2005 and
2006. The impressive result is an energy saving
of over 28 per cent!
e radiators in the corridors and
classrooms were equipped with HERZ
TS-90-V thermostatic valves with
hidden pre-setting and with HERZcules
thermostatic heads. is compact HERZ
thermostatic head has been specially
built for use in public buildings and is
protected against the, unauthorised
tampering and vandalism.
e radiators in the office rooms
are equipped with HERZ TS-98-V
thermostatic valves with readable presetting
and HERZ mini thermostatic
heads. is gives the option of
individually controlling room
temperature in the offices.
A total of 28 risers, each with a HERZ
4217 circuit control valve in the flow
as well as a HERZ 4115 shut-off
valve and a HERZ 4007 differential
pressure controller in the return have
been installed. A total of 152 HERZ
thermostatic valves with HERZ
thermostatic heads have been installed
on the radiators.
The Mollardgasse vocational
college in Vienna’s 6th District
is housed in the first vocational
college building in the world and its
active history goes back almost 100
years. Today the imposing building is
historically listed and is home to five
vocational colleges: Vocational colleges
for sanitary engineering, plumbing,
heating and air conditioning, metal and
glass technology, information technology
and electrical and event technology.
Furthermore, a watch and clock making
workshop, an apprentice library and
the Vienna Plumbing Museum are also
located here.
HERZ Armaturen has supported
apprenticeships for a long time by
equipping laboratories, holding specialist
lectures and organising factory visits.
When the complete renovation of the
heating equipment was planned in 2003,
HERZ offered support for the planning
and fitting phases.
In 2004 the risers were refurbished and fitted with HERZ 4217 circuit control valves and
HERZ 4007 differential pressure controllers.
Commissioning of the system in the
classrooms was carried out by students
and teachers of the vocational college
for plumbing and heating technology.
HERZ measuring equipment, FlowPlus,
were made available for this, and for
further studies.

A brief chronology
of the Mollardgasse
vocational college
1907: Saw the decision to build the
Mollardschule, according to the mayor,
Dr. Lueger –“As an honour and lasting
memorial to the 60 th Jubilee of Kaiser Franz
Joseph I”.
1911: The building was completed. The
building costs alone totalled 4 million
Krone. On 20 th October 1911, the
celebratory opening of the 1 st Viennese
Central vocational college building took
place.
1911/12: Came into full use at the
beginning of the academic year with 27
specialist further education colleges.
1914: Soldiers were billeted here from
August to November (because of the First
World War).
1915: A sick bay was housed in the school.
Post-war years: Quite a number of other
schools settled in the Mollardgasse and the
number of students increased to 9,200.
1925/26: 49 specialist colleges and
apprentice workshops were now located
here.
1942: During the National Socialist period
further education inspectorates and funds
were disbanded. Vocational college
education was limited to two years.
1944: Bombs destroyed around a third of
the building.
1945–1951: Saw the reconstruction by the
Vienna municipality.
1962: The school regulations were
altered: There followed the introduction
of nine compulsory school years and an
independent polytechnic course was
instituted in the Mollardgasse.
1975: A major reform of vocational colleges
took place: The result was a lowering of the
maximum number of students in a class,
laboratory instruction, division into groups,
compulsory subjects
and performance-related advancement.
1979/80: There were now 32,500
vocational students in Vienna. Additional
central vocational college buildings were
constructed to relieve the strain on the
Mollardschule.
1994–1999: Saw new buildings for the
assembly shop, sanitary and heating
engineering and the gymnasium. Roof
replacements and façade renovations were
also carried out.
2003/2004: The renovation of the whole
heating system began using HERZ fittings.
2005/2006: The comparative data for
energy consumption became available.
In the first year there was already an
absolute saving of 17%, and after two years
there was a 28.5% decrease in energy
consumption!

increased flows
The new HERZ high lift head was developed
primarily for combination with TS-E thermostatic
valves with maximum flow for
single pipe and gravity equipment.
The field of application is in the
refurbishment and retrofitting
of central single pipe systems in
multi-storey buildings. e thermostatic
head is fitted with automatic frost
protection and the option of limiting
and locking of the set point. e hand
wheel is white.
e 1 7262 00 thermostatic head (high
li head) guarantees the high li of the
TS-E valve,
which means
a higher

Product innovations for HERZ
VTA and VUA four-way valves
The HERZ four-way valve product group
has been complemented with the new
models, HERZ VTA-50 and HERZ VUA-50
with a pipe separation of 50 mm and
M 30 x 1.5 mm thermostatic connection
threads. To guarantee a uniform visual
effect and the benefits of the new,
slimline design for the whole product
group, the well-known HERZ VTA-40
and HERZ VUA-40 four-way valves (pipe
HERZ VUA-50
separation 40 mm) have been available
in new improved model variants since the end of 2005.

The altered dimensions, especially
for the VTA-40 model, represent
a decisive improvement in the
application: e slimmer shape makes
wall installation easier as 90° rotation
and horizontal installation are now
possible. Horizontal as well as vertical
supply pipe can therefore be connected.
Due to the sparge pipe having been
made uniform, so that it is now the
same for all models, the number of
replacement parts is now reduced,
which leads to simplification when
retrofitting. All technical characteristics

At the SODEX trade fair, which took place from 4 th to 7 th May 2006 in
Istanbul, HERZ Armaturen presented its complete product range.
The Hagia Sofia, once a basilica, then a mosque, and today a museum, is

HERZ is further building upon the expansion and useful

in St. Martin (Šmartno) / Slovenia, which currently trades
under the name HERZ DD, two market leaders in the former
Yugoslavia have become members of the HERZ group.

“Dizimieu Castle” is the company headquarters as well as the
reference project. In 2000 the first HERZ firematic biomass heating
in France went into operation here.
At the “Lyceé Amberieu”, a technical school for installers, the
students practice direct by installing, adjusting and maintaining
heating equipment. As well as oil and gas boilers, HERZ biomass
equipment (25kW) is in operation here.
Environment-friendly biomass fuel, which was originally used to
heat ancient buildings, is also booming now in a country that has
traditionally been reliant on electricity from nuclear energy!
HERZ Feuerungstechnik
in France
Whereas a few years ago only wood pellets were available – and indeed
these were of poor quality – today the market for pellet equipment is
growing, not only in the field of single and multiple family dwellings but
also in the large systems sector (from 300kW). Wood shavings and offcuts
have been an important factor on the French market since 2000,
and numerous large HERZ systems have already been installed.
Re-thinking among those in
government
e French government promotes
environment-friendly energy according
to the region, and a number of
comparative studies about the characteristics,
advantages and disadvantages
of individual fuels have been
commissioned and published. A study
by the French Ministry of Economy
and Finance shows that the price of a
litre of oil in the period of comparison
between June 1999 and June 2006 has
doubled, and the price for a kilo of

HERZ Feuerungstechnik is represented
in France by SBthermique. e company,
founded in 2001, specialises in
alternative energy sources. Six staff
currently look aer the large French
market, and an extension of the team
is planned during the year. e HERZ
products are being sold exclusively
via the specialist, and selected installers,
who are distributed strategically
across the whole of France, are being
intensively trained in HERZ products
at the company head office and on-site.
A higher standard of service is thereby
guaranteed for the customer. In the
short term questions can be answered
and maintenance work carried out onsite
by the known specialist.
The company headquarters as the
first reference project
e company headquarters of SBthermique
is also the first reference project
in France and a particularly interesting
one. e offices of the HERZ
representatives are housed in the
neighbouring Dimizieu Castle (45 km
from Lyon), the oldest part of which
was built in the 16 th Century. e first
HERZ firematic biomass equipment
(90kW) to be installed in France, has
been heating the 700 square metres of
the ancient building since 2000.
Another piece of equipment with
the same heat capacity was recently
installed to supply the neighbouring
buildings (mansion, offices and events
room). e new environment-friendly
heating offers many advantages in
contrast to the previous oil-heating
equipment. Energy consumption was

extremely high in this poorly insulated old building. Nowadays,
the fuel comes from the adjoining forest and is placed
directly in the silo. e equipment has paid for itself within
three months due to the savings on fuel and transportation
costs.
HERZ BioMatic opens up new opportunities in the
market
e future looks very positive for large HERZ systems and
the new HERZ BioMatic is also opening up wider markets in
France. Large installations of 220kW and a 500kW have already
been put in, and large 300kW and 500kW installations are also
being planned for biomass.

One of the basic preconditions
for correct functioning of a
hot water heating system is
the proper planning and design of the
hydraulics. is guide helps engineers
and planners to construct an optimal
hot water heating system. As a basis
for the technical information, the
relevant valid standards and technical
guidelines are listed. e basic
relationships between heat and flow
are explained, insofar as this is required
for the application in question. e
fundamental approach of this book is
its practical relevance. Frequently used
equipment parts, valves, pumps, etc.
are described and thereby facilitate the
choice of corresponding products. So
as not to go beyond the scope and to
maintain the clarity, such a description
can only be made using examples, and
never in full. As well as the German
version, there is also a Russian version
of the book. Versions are being prepared
in English, Serbian, Polish, Bulgarian
and Rumanian. e reader is introduced
to the heat and current instructions in
the first chapter – ESSENTIALS. e
subsequent chapters give a detailed
summary of the following areas:

Advertising works…
... with the HERZ ad being well received
by the public!
The current HERZ ad* was subjected
to an ad impact test at the
end of 2005 as part of a campaign.
e well-known market research agency,
Karmasin, tested all the ads appearing in
this issue for their advertising effectiveness
by conducting a face-to-face readership
survey.
Spontaneous and prompted recall of the
ad, the products and the brand, the message
being conveyed and the liking of
the ad were all surveyed. HERZ switching
achieved a very good result, was
recalled by an above-average number of
respondents and attained a total score of
2.5** (the average evaluation in this survey
was 3.1). What was particularly positive
in terms of liking, was that respondents
commented on the wide product
range and the comprehensive product
information. e appealing layout was
also recognised by the respondents.
