THE CITY OF TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA
Home to the state capital, two major universities and
an array of museums, attractions and unique
experiences, Tallahassee shares a deep-rooted history
and culture with unparalleled nature and outdoor
recreation. A fusion of cosmopolitan flair and
southern personality defines the spirit of Florida’s
Capital City - where it all comes together for visitors.
Stretching along the Florida Panhandle, Tallahassee is
a place where college town meets cultural center,
politics meets performing arts and history meets
nature – a place where the vibrancy of what to do is
matched only by the city’s inviting hospitality.
Tallahassee, named Florida’s capital in 1824, was
midway between the then-largest cities in the state, St.
Augustine and Pensacola. Tallahassee boasts diverse
heritage and is flourishing with many cultures,
rhythms and flavors. Museums, festivals, cuisine, arts
and crafts, and year-round events honor and celebrate
diversity of heritage in the Tallahassee area. Florida’s
Capital City played a big role in the story of Florida
and in American history and is still making
history today.
Located just 25 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and 14
miles south of Georgia, Tallahassee is situated in the
Panhandle area of Florida. With four major highways
- I-10, US 27, US 319 and US 90 – leading into
Tallahassee, a regional airport with major airline
carriers, a private charter airport and many rental car
companies, getting to and around Tallahassee is
simple and stress-free.
Tallahassee is the home of Florida State University,
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, a
large Tallahassee Community College and seven postsecondary/private
schools. Tallahassee’s multiple
premier research and education institutions are
attracting world-class talent while also providing
training programs for a variety of skill-sets, including
certification through doctoral degrees.
THE CITY GOVERNMENT
The mission of the City of Tallahassee is to provide
excellent services and facilities to support a high
quality of life for our community. The City of
Tallahassee’s four organizational values are:

Customer Service is Our Business
Demonstrate Leadership and Personal
Responsibility
Promote and Support Employee Excellence
Practice Teamwork
AIRPORT
In 1929, the City of Tallahassee opened its first
municipal airport, Dale Mabry Field. At that time, the
airport had one grass landing strip. In 1938-39, the
United States Army established a fighter pilot training
school at this location and developed three runways to
serve their needs. This facility continued to provide
military operations and commercial service to the
community. The Dale Mabry Field site was
abandoned in 1961 when a new facility was
completed adjacent to the present airport site. This
facility, originally designed to accommodate air traffic
needs through 1975, expanded to meet the
transportation needs of Florida's capital city and the
surrounding region until the late 1980's. On December
3, 1989, the city opened the existing $33 million,
airline passenger terminal. The airport anticipates that
these facilities and surrounding land development
opportunities will enable the Tallahassee Regional
Airport to provide world class aviation transportation
services for business and leisure travelers well into the
next century.
The Tallahassee market area of more than 1.4 million
total populations includes Tallahassee, eleven
neighboring Florida counties and twelve southern
Georgia counties.
