TABLE 3‐3: WAIKERIE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPH REVIEW FRAME/SURVEY No PHOTO Mapland: 0202_4730 1:40,000 Black and white Mapland: 1407_0092 1:40,000 Black and white DATE 4/09/1956 13/04/1972 OBSERVATIONS Waikerie West: The 1956 aerial photograph indicates the area was already largely occupied by agriculture, comprised by both tree plantation and some cleared areas. It can be observed a few houses located mostly in the central‐western and southern sections of the allotment. Road network was greatly established in 1956, consisting of dirt roads. Adjacent areas presented the same land use pattern. Waikerie East: The 1956 aerial photograph indicates the site was already occupied by small to medium size rural properties with houses. Despite the large agricultural use of the area, minor areas of undisturbed natural vegetation can be observed both at the southern section of the allotment and at small portions of the northern section. Street network is already well established, composed basically by dirty roads. It was not possible to identify whether or not main roads (e.g. Sturt Hwy) were paved. Western adjacent areas have basically the same occupation pattern of the site; whereas beyond southern boundaries areas were composed by native disturbed vegetation and pasture, at eastern by pasture, north‐western by a golf course and disturbed native vegetation, and at northern by the River Murray banks. Waikerie West: The 1972 aerial photograph indicates a similar site layout to the 1956 aerial photograph, with exception of a slight increase of planted areas. Adjacent areas at the northern boundary were considerably developed during this period displaying a new building complex and cricket court at Northeastern of the site, while all the other adjacent areas did not change extensively. Waikerie East: The 1972 aerial photograph indicates a similar site layout to the 1956 aerial photograph, with the exception of improvements in the road network, cropping areas (minor), and housing in the middle and northern sections of the allotment. Adjacent areas also presented slight expansion of housing and cropping areas, and improvement of roads, e.g. asphalt paving of Sturt Hwy and Maggea Rd. The area located beyond the north‐western boundary presented an expansion of the Golf Course area, development of an Oval, and construction of buildings in the corner of Sturt Hwy with Railway Tce (parallel to Maggea Rd).
