he Department of<br />
Corrections’ Division<br />
of Professional Standards<br />
is responsible for department-wide<br />
criminal and<br />
administrative investigations.<br />
The Division also includes<br />
the Polygraph Unit<br />
and the Hearings Bureau.<br />
The Polygraph Unit is<br />
responsible for conducting<br />
polygraph examinations<br />
related to the supervision<br />
and treatment of sex<br />
offenders, the pre-employment<br />
recruitment of uniformed<br />
staff, and criminal<br />
and administrative investigations.<br />
Community safety<br />
is the number one priority.<br />
The sex offender polygraph<br />
testing program assists<br />
Probation/Parole Officers<br />
and sexual offender treatment<br />
providers by identifying<br />
low level behaviors<br />
which, if left unchecked,<br />

could lead to high level<br />
risk behaviors and possibly<br />
re-offense. In addition, the<br />
pre-employment polygraph<br />
examinations for<br />
law enforcement positions<br />
ensure that the Department<br />
of Corrections selects<br />
trustworthy candidates. In<br />
SFY <strong>2014</strong>, the Polygraph<br />
Unit conducted a total of<br />
249 examinations.<br />
The Hearings Bureau<br />
provides a due process<br />
system for hearing inmate<br />
grievances and claims,<br />
and ensures proper due<br />
process protection and<br />
adherence to disciplinary<br />
procedures for the<br />
inmate population. In SFY<br />
<strong>2014</strong>, the Hearings Bureau<br />
processed 8,898 disciplinary<br />
<strong>report</strong>s (1,458 of which<br />
resulted in hearings) and<br />
ordered restitution in the<br />
amount of $120,669.<br />
The Investigations<br />
Bureau is responsible<br />
for the department-wide<br />
investigation of serious<br />
incidents and allegations<br />
of criminal and/or<br />
administrative wrongdoing<br />
by inmates, staff and<br />
members of the public as<br />
well as assistance to other<br />
law enforcement agencies.<br />
During SFY <strong>2014</strong>,<br />
the Investigations Bureau<br />
staff conducted 1,696<br />
investigations. In addition,<br />
the investigations staff<br />
received 40 indictments<br />
as a result of 30 criminal<br />
investigations presented to<br />
the Grand Jury.<br />
