Analysis of texts that contain early Chinese myths,<br />

legends, <strong>and</strong> historical narratives in their construction<br />

of an underst<strong>and</strong>able world. How such materials have<br />

been incorporated into different cultural formations<br />

from later periods, including contemporary popular<br />

culture. How they have figured into the construction of<br />

China <strong>and</strong> Chineseness in 20th Century.<br />

Genji monogatari, a lengthy narrative, Makura no<br />

soshi, a collection of vignettes, <strong>and</strong> poetry. Gendered<br />

What happens when one nationʼs popular culture<br />

begins to permeate others. Japanimation, manga,<br />

fashion, <strong>and</strong> music. Relationship of popular culture to<br />

nation(alism), ethnicity, gender, <strong>and</strong> identity. Effects<br />

of popular culture on consumers, socialization. Ways<br />

that consumption affects us personally.<br />
