Letter from the Headmaster (continued)
(Continued from page 1)
what they believed was a reasonable, yet generous
amount that they believed Seabury could raise. I was
stunned when the committee said
they wanted to raise $10,000 and
we were going to raise it by February
17. I had never seen this
level of fundraising achieved at the
student level in a school our size.
Actually, I was not certain that it
was possible. I must admit, I love
to be proven wrong by young people,
when the cause is appropriate.
As I write this letter, we are only
one week into the fundraising effort
and we have already reached
the $8,200 mark. I have no doubt
that we will reach the final goal
long before the deadline.
You, the parents of these young
people, should be very proud.
You have instilled some wonderful values in your children
that demonstrate a sense of altruism and an understanding
that the world’s problems are our problems.
We are very proud of our students’ involvement in the
community in other ways as well. Their
commitment to the welfare of others
extends well beyond the basic requirement
that is part of the Seabury curriculum.
They have created service-oriented
programs that are not just about raising
money, but also require a commitment of
time. The “Kids Helping Kids” program
continues to provide tutoring services for
the homeless. The “Dancing Palette”
program provides an art experience for
the developmentally handicapped. The
Interact Club works with the Terry Fox
Run and the “Relay for Life” for the
American Cancer Society. The Philosophy
Club sponsors a program for feeding
the homeless on Friday afternoons. Our
students have held rummage sales so that
gifts can be bought for the Headstart
Program children in Makawao, and they
have held very successful food drives for
the Maui Food Bank. I am awed by their desire to make
a difference.
Juniors Ashley Campbell and Nanette Le
are Mrs. Lacanienta’s faithful assistants!
The final statement in our mission is that we should
“cause young people to realize their responsibility to
community.” “Realize” certainly means understand, but
Nanette’s younger brother,
seventh-grader Ryan, gives a
“thumbs up” to their successful
experiments with the “slime”
they also created!
it also means to “make real.” The word was chosen
specifically for that purpose and I am pleased that we
are fulfilling this portion of our mission with such enthusiasm
and success.
Regarding the first statement of our
mission, “college preparatory,” I am
pleased to announce that our seniors
continue to garner college acceptances
at an amazing level. Three-quarters of
our senior students have received their
college acceptances. Almost one-half of
those students have received merit
scholarships. The colleges that students
have been accepted to include Yale,
New York University, Dartmouth,
Scripps, Loyola Marymount, Trinity
College, Emerson College, University of
San Diego, Santa Clara University, University
of San Francisco, University of
Colorado (Boulder), Willamette University,
California Polytechnic Institute (San
Luis Osbispo), Lewis & Clark College, Colorado State
University, University of the Pacific, Whittier College,
University of Redlands, Hawaii Pacific University, University
of New Hampshire, Weber State University,
Carleton University (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), University
of Hawaii (Manoa), University of Manitoba
(Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada), University
of Portland, Montana State University,
University of Oregon, Westmont College,
Hawaii Pacific University, and Chaminade
University.
We congratulate all of those students who
have received their acceptances and those
who will be receiving them.
In conclusion, we look forward to working
with our fine students during this second
semester and to sharing in all of their success.
We also look forward to the completion
of the ambitious Capital Campaign.
We have reached 93% of the goal. Our
building plan is still on time and on budget.
Finally, we will match our facilities with our
outstanding program and faculty.
Sincerely,
Joseph J. Schmidt,
Headmaster
