questions, we definitely knew how we were going to
use the responses. But to actually
get pages of information and do
something constructive with it…..I
was kind of frozen in this semipanic
mode for a couple of days. (I
will admit that the fact that I hadn’t
even started my holiday gift shopping
may have added fuel to the
panic mode.) Luckily, on our
SHPO Board there are people who
are experts at seeing the forest
and understanding how they relate
to trees and I was eventually put
back on track.
To those of you who did respond
to the survey, thank you so much!
The information gathered from this survey is invaluable.
The comments were very thoughtful, constructive and
enlightening. We are in the
process of analyzing the results
at many levels and plan
on using them to improve
SHPO so that it can better
fulfill its mission statement.

January 4 th
SHPO meeting
We start each meeting with
the reading of the SHPO Mission
Statement. This helps to
remind us why we are there
and get us on the same track.
Planning for the 32nd Annual Craft Fair has
begun! See the Craft Fair News (last page)
for information about how you can help.
• The Education Committee is busy making
sure everything is in place for the
two education nights we have in
January.
• The Textbook Committee
is actively thinking about the logistics
for the Used Book Sale.
• The Parent Participation
Committee is ready to move on
to the next steps in their process,
now that they have the survey
results in hand.
We reviewed the Survey Results and
divided the questions up amongst the
various committees. Each committee
is tasked with coming to the March
meeting with recommendations for
the Board to discuss. In order to give the committees ample
time to meet as often as needed to come up with their
recommendations, the February
SHPO meeting is being cancelled.
SHPO’s Parent
Education Committee
hosted drug
educator Gary Shimabukuro
of
Laulima Hawaii
during its general
meeting on January
20th. The following
morning, he
presented drug
abuse information
to students
during assembly.
The Executive Committee will
be meeting to look at the overall
survey results and form their own
recommendations before the
March meeting.
Joe Schmidt presented the
Headmaster’s Report. Included in
the report: College Acceptances,
Drug and Alcohol Education, Craft
Fair Update, and Alumni Assessments.
Mr. Schmidt encouraged
attendance of Dr. J. Zink’s program on January 27 and at
Mr. Gary Shimabukuro’s presentation on January 20.
Cheryl then introduced Karli
Smallwood as the 2005 Craft
Fair Chair. Karli’s willingness to
step forward to fill this very
important slot in our school
community was recognized and
appreciated. She reported that
most of the Committee Chairs
are in place and welcomed new
ideas.
Gayle Hart informed us that she is
gearing up for the Craft Fair and
thanked everybody for their time and
new ideas.
The next board meeting is Tuesday,
March 1 st at 6:30 pm in the Dining
Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend.

speaker, gave an insightful presentation
full of humor and useful information
on parenting in a well-attended gathering.
