Upper School News By Lou Young Page 4 Dear Upper School Parents, Happy Valentine’s Day!! I can’t believe that it is February, and in four short months, school will be over. Looking ahead I see that the ensuing months will be a veritable smorgasbord of activities and special events. Listed below is a sample: Community Day / Rally Day Community Day will take place on February 4 th . This day offers the students an opportunity to show their appreciation of our community – a community that encompasses such groups as the class, the school, the local community and the world. Consequently, the morning assemblies during the week leading up to February 4 th will be devoted to global issues. Speakers and programs will ask the students to reflect on our world, their place in it and everyone’s responsibilities to help make it a better place. On Community Day itself, students will spend the morning with their grade level out in our local community performing chores that will help individuals and organizations. These chores can range from picking up trash, washing windows and painting buildings, to visiting with and assisting people who struggle to help themselves such as the physically or mentally challenged and some elderly people. Each group will be taking digital photos of the morning and a slide show will be quickly produced and shown in the afternoon so that all can see the collective good we can do when we work together. The afternoon will be turned over to some of our student leaders as they put on events designed to further enhance school spirit and bonding. I know for a fact how excited these leaders are. They are a wonderful group of dedicated students who are constantly looking for ways to make the Seabury Hall experience be the best it can be. The day will end with a whole school event followed by an ice cream social. Finally, the Upper School will be having its Valentine’s dance that evening. This should be a great day! Attendance Just a quick reminder that parents are requested to call the school (572-7235) between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. if their son or daughter will not be attending that day or will be missing any part of the day. Thank you for your help in this matter. Advanced Placement Art Exhibits The highly anticipated Advanced Placement Art exhibits will begin on Monday, February 7 and continue every Monday thereafter until every Advanced Placement Art student has displayed their work. The public is cordially invited to view this outstanding work. (I am sure that you will be very impressed.) Winterim: February 21 - 24 Winterim is designed to expand the Seabury program beyond the classroom walls. It offers a hands-on, experiential approach to learning, the chance to meet and interact with different student groups across grade levels, and a unique opportunity to grow in our understanding, appreciation and support of each other and our Maui community – its land and people. The goals of Winterim are to provide opportunities for students to: • Experience learning outside of the standard curriculum. • Work together in a dynamic setting across grade levels. • Develop self-confidence by experiencing challenges in unfamiliar settings. • Gain a better understanding of their homeland and the Hawaiian culture. • Experience the joy of giving and understand the importance of service. Winterim is one of the concepts that makes Seabury Hall so unique. By now, your child should have received his/her Winterim assignment and has met with his/her group. The Winterim committee worked long hours carefully making these assignments. They made sure that the brochure accurately described the Winterim event, the requirements and the cost so that students and parents could make appropriate choices. As such, they used the cards submitted and signed by students and parents attempting to insure that every student was given one of his/her top 5 choices. As a result of the indicated choices and assignments, commitments have been made to outside vendors, professionals and locations. In the past, the period after (Continued on page 5) SEABURY HALL
VOLUME 5, ISSUE 6 Page 5 (Continued from page 4) assignments was fraught with attempts to switch assignments for sundry reasons (wanted to be with another friend, changed mind, costs, etc.). Therefore, we are holding firm to the assignments. If you have any questions, please feel free to talk to Ms. Brenda Newton (Upper School Winterim Director) or me, Lou Young. We will be glad to talk to you. Please don’t forget to fill out and return the necessary forms such as Entrustment of Care form, or the Driving Permission form (if your son or daughter will be driving others or riding with others) or letters of notification of any allergies or special food needs. This year’s Winterim promises to be one of the best ever. I am looking forward to working with the golf Winterim. Who knows, maybe I can break 100. SENIOR PARENTS! Important Graduation Meeting Course Selections Currently, we are updating our course offerings for next year to reflect the new courses and to highlight updates to established courses. Our Seabury Hall website will be updated to outline course offerings. Prior to the December break, we asked all students to meet with their advisor to complete their fouryear plan. The advisors will give each student a copy of that plan to share with their parents. Please feel free to contact the advisor, the dean (Mr. Colflesh – 9 th grade, Ms. Garcia – 10 th grade, Ms. Middleton – 11 th grade) or Mr. Young, Upper School Head, if you have any questions or Tuesday, February 15 at 6:30 pm in the Dining Hall This meeting is designed to ensure that all senior events leading up to and culminating with graduation are fully explained. Please make every effort to attend. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Lou Young comments. Please know that these four-year plans are not written in stone and can and will change many times over the four years. They serve only as a guide. plan, explore our website, and, using the advisor as a resource, alter their child’s program as desired. The deans and I will review every student’s course selections and add our input as well. I believe that this process, although time consuming, greatly adds direction, interactive dialogue and clarity to what can sometimes be a confusing maze. The target date for receiving everyone’s input and completing this initial process is February 28. Once again, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, comments or suggestions. Senior Trip Again, we are preparing for the 2005 senior trip. The senior trip will take place from May 22 to May 25. This four-day event has become a well-respected tradition at Seabury Hall and provides our seniors with the opportunity to come together for one last time in a safe and sober fashion prior to graduation. You will be receiving more information regarding this program as the year passes. The cost of the program will be $175 per student. The price is all inclusive (four days of food, lodging, guides, boat trips, activities, entertainment, transportation, etc.) Payment will be discussed with the seniors during a class meeting. Seniors are reminded that their first payment for their senior trip ($80) was due on January 28 with the second payment ($80) due February 18 and the third payment of ($15) by March 28. We will, of course, accept full payment at any time. Graduation We are planning for graduation. (I am beginning to meet with all seniors so that they can help me practice pronouncing names.) Graduation is May 28. During the months of January and February, the advisors, armed with the four year plans, knowledge of graduation requirements and other necessary information, will help your son or daughter determine course selections for the fall of 2005, and a tentative plan for the duration of their years here at Seabury.
