A Letter to the Community…
Each year in March, Ohio celebrates DD Awareness
Month with a special theme to unify events
and public awareness campaigns throughout
the state. This year’s theme focusing on TO-
GETHER … INSPIRING POSSIBILITIES
AND BRIGHTER FUTURES has been a
cornerstone of the Lake County Board of Developmental
Disabilities/Deepwood’s mission
from its inception in the early 1960s. Through
the tireless advocacy of Lake County families and
individuals with disabilities, LCBDD/Deepwood
programs and services were locally established long before
mandated by state-wide statute. LCBDD/Deepwood has
grown from a handful of families seeking educational services for their
children to more than 1,900 individuals of all ages seeking multifaceted,
community-integrated services and supports.
While there are many measures an Agency may use to assess its progress,
there are no more significant nor meaningful indicators than the
people and the community served. Our
Agency annually assesses its progress
through a series of consumer satisfaction
surveys. In 2010, we received an 96%
overall satisfaction rating from our consumers—exceptional
aggregate feedback
that reinforces our continuing quest to
INSPIRE POSSIBILITIES by coordinating
the broadest scope of options and
highest quality of programs and services
for individuals served, while maintaining
fiscal responsibility. On a more personal
basis, the individual successes and accomplishments
of the individuals we
serve reinforce the BRIGHTER FU-
TURES that our Lake County citizens
have so strongly supported. We can offer
thousands of individual profiles of such
accomplishments, gains, and BRIGHT
FUTURES…and invite Lake County
citizens to personally share in these
accomplishments by visiting and/or
volunteering in our many programs and
functions…snapshots of TOGETHER
that we proudly share in this 2010 Annual
Report!
Our thanks to all the individuals we
serve, their families, staff, volunteers,
organizations, and the Lake County
community for the ongoing support that
assures “Together, our future is brighter,
we accomplish more, inspire possibilities,
and everybody wins!”
BUILDING BONDS DAY
The Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities/Deepwood experienced much joy, laughter, and memorable
moments during “Building Bonds Day” when one hundred and twenty (120) volunteers from the Western
Reserve Junior Service League (WRJSL) and Lubrizol Corporation converged on the Deepwood Campus.
They came together to generously donate their time, expertise, resources, and commitment to enrich the lives of
individuals served by the Board. During the day, the volunteers produced a carnival, hosted a picnic, painted various
residential rooms, cleaned-up a walking trail, landscaped around agency signs and gardens, and cleaned windows.
It was an incredible experience for everyone involved. The memories of the day remain even though the sounds of
the sing- along, slurping of snow cones, taste of the hot dogs and smell of fresh paint fade. Thanks to the generosity
of the member of the Western Reserve Junior Service League and employees of Lubrizol Corporation many lives
were impacted and the campus was transformed by the end of “Building Bonds Day.”
Novel “October Sky” Inspires Local Students and
Lake County Board of DD Noble Readers Book Club
Snow Cones, Games and Prizes
On November 10, 2010, members of the Noble Readers Book Club from
the Lake County Baord of Developmental Disabilities/Deepwood and students
from Ridge Middle School in Mentor collaborated together to build
and launch paper rockets after being inspired by the novel, “October Sky.”
Rocket Boys/October Sky, is based on the true story of Homer Hickam
(author), a coal miner’s son who was inspired by the first Sputnik launch to
take up rocketry against his father’s wishes.
Ridge Middle School students paired with Noble Readers book club
members to build paper rockets and launch them to celebrate the novel and
enjoy their own October Sky.
The Second Annual October Sky Party was an opportunity for the students
to experience first-hand the abilities of individuals with developmental
disabilities as well as share their rocket successes and failures, view slides
from the students trip to the Festival in Coalwood (location of the novel)
and share the students special projects based on the book.
On Friday, July 30, 2010, Willoughby Workshop
of the Lake County Board of Developmental
Disabilities/Deepwood was magically
transformed into a carnival with games, prizes,
and clowns galore. Thanks to Selman & Company
employees and family members who spent
the morning bringing joy to others by producing
a carnival for individuals enrolled at the
Willoughby Workshop, 2100 Joseph Lloyd Parkway in Willoughby.
This was the third year Selman & Company chose the Lake County Board of
DD/Deepwood as one of the agencies in which they volunteer to make a difference.
Selman & Company believes strongly in demonstrating their commitment
to the community. They generously spent time organizing, getting prizes and producing
the carnival. After they produced their first carnival and it was so enjoyable
for everyone involved, they asked to come back and do it again.
Elfie Roman, Superintendent of Lake County Board of DD/Deepwood commented
“How fortunate we are to have Selman & Company come to our agency
to create fun and entertainment for the people served by the Board. It means so
much to us to have Selman & Company employees contribute their time and talents
towards producing this pleasurable event.”
In November, students at Broadmoor School collected
gum and created cards for the Mentor Public
Library’s Support Our Troops program to send
holiday greetings and care packages to U.S. troops
serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Broadmoor teacher, Laurie Kuenzig, and her
students saw an opportunity to make the holidays
brighter for these dedicated soldiers and decided to
make their contribution part of a class project and
field trip to “thank our troops for their service and
bravery.”
In conjunction with the donation drive, the students
learned about freedom and what the troops do
for Americans to help ensure they are safe and free.
The students delivered their letters along with
more than 2,100 packages of chewing gum and mints
to the library to be sent overseas. Students that could
not write a letter used pictures of sign language and
icons or clip art to express their gratitude.
Darlene Workman, manager of the Library’s
Headlands Branch, and mother, said her son appreciates
the community’s efforts. “It was nice for him
to know that his neighbors and friends care about
what he is doing. It gave him a little piece of home.”
“Gang of Good” Enriches Deepwood Campus
Seventy youth including six graders and high school students of
Leadership Lake County’s Junior Leadership Academy and Youth
Program as well as welding students from Willoughby-Eastlake
Technical Center converged on the Deepwood Campus of the
Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities/Deepwood to
learn from one another about community service. They worked side
by side beautifying the agency grounds.
Elfie Roman, Superintendent of Lake County Board of DD/
Deepwood expressed her enthusiasm in having Mr. Ryan Eubank
and the welding students return, “Our experiences last year have
created a bond for life.”
A core group of the welding students are working to impact the
lives of others through their mentoring initiative entitled, “Gang
of Good.” They believe in positively changing the world by sharing
their individual stories and leadership and welding skills.
Frank Sinkko, one of the leaders of the “Gang of Good” reports,
“Last year’s project at the Lake County Board of DD turned my life
around. I was into drugs and messing around. And then, Mr. Eubank
showed me how I could constructively use my welding skills.”
Frank and Justin Stewart were two students who placed first in
the State of Ohio’s and fourteenth in the country’s 2009 SKILLS
USA Competition. They are leading the charge this year.
On May 2, 2010, The Fine Arts Association hosted a
fun-filled day to celebrate the arts and artists of all abilities.
The event featured live entertainment on stage,
art activities, music, pet therapy, colorful mascots, face
painting, and Shannon van Huss’s World on Wheels.
The live entertainment included Homestead Creek
band, Ken Eiker, Deepwood Community Employment
Services (CES) Singing Fingers, and Deepwood
Vocational Guidance Center (VGC) Idol Winners.
Proceeds from the event were split between The
Fine Arts Association Music Therapy scholarship and
Deepwood Foundation. The day was sponsored
By Deepwood Foundation, Doc’s Deepwood Run,
and Lake County Association of Retarded Citizens
(LCARC).
Frank also reconnected with a childhood
friend, Logan Rohaley to form the “Gang of
Good.” Logam and his teammates from Mentor
High School Cardinal Football team joined
the welding students and youth leaders to help
break down barriers between cliques and stereotypes
in schools.
In April and May the “Gang of Good” plans
to build and install bike racks and a biking trail
for Edison Elementary School in Willoughby,
construct a playground for Crossroads, and do
a variety of projects for the Lake County Board
of DD/Deepwood. Their efforts will provide a
lifetime of “good” for others to enjoy.
Community Service Day was a wonderful example
of the Lake County Board of DD/Deepwood
involvement in activities that advance
public awareness and assists individuals with
Chili Cook-Off Proceeds Go To Worthy Cause
Willoughby Workshop’s Consumers
Advocacy Committee delivered a $250
donation to Ronald MacDonald House
in Cleveland.
The Willoughby Workshop sponsors
one of the agency’s advocacy committees
comprised of individuals served by the
Board, community members and staff
to address concerns regarding services
provided individuals with developmental
disabilities.
For the last three years the Willoughby
Workshop Advocacy Committee
has hosted a chili cook-off as an
activity during March - Developmental
Disabilities Awareness Month. Proceeds
from the event are donated to various
charities. In 2010 the committee decided to donate their
proceeds to the Ronald MacDonald House in Cleveland
in order to support children and families faced with serious
health issues.
` The chili cook-off has been held annually at the
end of March. There were thirteen different chili recipes
that were tasted and judged by a panel of celebrity judges
including the Honorable Judge Larry Allen, Mayor Dave
Anderson, and Willoughby-Eastlake School Superintendent
Keith Miller, Ph.D.
The Consumer Advocacy Committee finds that the
cook-off is a tasty and fun venue in which to raise money
and awareness of the many worthwhile charitable organizations
in our community. They spend much time and
deliberation to decide the deserving charity to support.
The efforts of the advocacy committee reflect the importance
the Lake County Board of DD/Deepwood
places on individuals with disabilities to be valued and
contributing members of their chosen communities.
