Aviation services
As the international gateway to southern Australia,
Melbourne provides access to a catchment area of seven
million people with a compelling mix of business,
leisure and ‘visiting friends and relatives’ traffic.
Already an important air traffic hub in Australia,
capacity exists for further expansion at Melbourne’s
two airports characterised by high levels of operational
flexibility and efficiency. As an example of this, a recent
benchmarking study found employee productivity at
Melbourne Airport is about one-third higher than the
average for other southern hemisphere airports.
Melbourne’s role as Australia’s leading logistics hub is
strengthened by international investment in aviation
ground services at Melbourne Airport including Toll,
DNATA and Menzies Aviation.
In 2009 Melbourne Airport increased its international
capacity by 12% and the Victorian Government is
committed to seeing this trend continue. The growth
is evident in the number of new carriers Melbourne
welcomed on new and existing routes and in the
expanding capacity of existing carriers.
• AirAsia X expanded to 11 weekly services between
Kuala Lumpur and Melbourne, and launched
services from Kuala Lumpur to Stansted London.
• Etihad Airways launched direct Airbus A340 services
between Melbourne and Abu Dhabi.
• Singapore Airlines introduced new A380 services
between Melbourne and Singapore.
• V Australia launched three new services out of
Melbourne; to Los Angeles, USA three times a week,
to Johannesburg, South Africa twice a week and to
Phuket, Thailand once a week.
• Emirates Airlines increased its services to Melbourne
to three daily flights using both Boeing 777 and A340
aircraft.
• Qatar Airways commenced three weekly direct air
services between Melbourne and Doha, the airline’s
first service to Australia.
• Qantas Airways announced the launch of its
fifth new A380 aircraft flying twice weekly on the
Melbourne to London route.
Looking forward, the State Government is working
towards expanding air access to priority markets
such as China and India. Domestic carriers Jetstar
and QantasLink have made commitments to increase
services between Melbourne and a number of other
Australian destinations during 2010.
The Melbourne-based low cost carrier, Tiger Airways
Australia will also be increasing services during 2010 as
four new aircraft will be assigned to their headquarters
at Melbourne Airport’s Terminal 4.
