In a major aviation coup, Melbourne
will host the International Air
Transport Association (IATA)
Conference in 2010. The conference
will run from 7th to 15th November
and is expected to draw more
than 1,100 delegates from 300
airlines and 200 airports worldwide.
The global competitiveness of local companies in the
areas of aerostructures, precision machining, robotic
systems, tooling and ground handling equipment is
evident in their inclusion in international supply chains
for the Boeing 787 and Joint Strike Fighter programs.
These companies include:
• Production Parts
• Aerostaff Australia
• Hofmann Metaltec
• Marand Precision Engineering
• Rosebank Engineering
Aerospace components
Melbourne is Australia’s centre of excellence for
aerospace design, manufacture and testing. Supported
by the state’s advanced manufacturing base, Victorian
firms supply components, tools and services to the
world’s prime aircraft manufacturers, including
Airbus, EADS, Boeing, Eurocopter, Lockheed Martin
and Northrop Grumman. A recent study by IBM Plant
Location International illustrates that Melbourne
provides a high quality operating environment at costs
below most other top global locations.
Global players including BAE Systems, QinetiQ and
GKN Aerospace Engineering Services have all chosen
to call Melbourne home for their Australian operations.
• Lovitt Technologies
Victoria is a recognised global leader in composite
material knowledge, technology and capability, which
partners perfectly with the introduction of the Boeing
787 and Airbus A380 aircrafts.
The Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced
Composite Structures, located at Melbourne’s
Fisherman’s Bend, works closely with industry to
deliver advanced research in composite materials.
Also located at Fisherman’s Bend, Boeing
Aerostructures is a Tier 1 supplier to the Boeing 787
program manufacturing the new aircraft’s moveable
trailing edges. Boeing Australia Component Repair is
also Melbourne-based, specialising in composite, sheet
metal and metal to metal bonded components repair
and overhaul for both commercial and military aircraft.
Victoria is the primary manufacturing centre in
Australia, generating over one third of the national
manufacturing output and turnover.
6AVIATION AND AEROSPACE – Melbourne, Australia 2010
Victoria accounts for 40% of Australian machinery and
equipment manufacture with particular strengths in
automotive, aerospace, scientific equipment, industrial
machinery and electronics.
Boeing’s recent decision to relocate its aerospace
component manufacturing business from Sydney to
Melbourne means Melbourne is now home to Boeing’s
largest footprint outside the USA. Boeing employs over
3,000 staff across Australia.
