Financial services
Challenge
To provide a cost-effective,
fully customizable e-banking
multi-channel solution to
financial institutions
Solution
Build primary internet
banking solution using:
• Ingres Database
• Ingres Icebreaker Business
Intelligence (BI) Appliance
• JBoss application server
Benefits
• Cost-effectively able to
meet all high-performance
requirements for e-banking
platform
• Provide a customizable,
multi-channel e-banking
solution that keeps
customer’s initial costs low
and reduces total cost of
ownership (TCO) by
approximately 25 percent
Highlights
NETinfo’s flagship product, NETteller e-Banking Solution, is a multi-channel e-banking platform.
In addition to providing secure, reliable, 24x7 access to business-critical information, NETteller
supports multiple jurisdictions, single sign-on for multiple banks, aggregated cross-border
services, and multi-signature workflows. By partnering with Ingres and building its internet
banking application on Ingres Database using JBoss Application Server, NETinfo is able to reduce
its customers’ total cost of ownership (TCO) by approximately 25 percent.
Company profile
One of the fastest growing independent software vendors (ISVs) in its field, NETinfo develops
software products that help create new, more efficient business models for financial institutions.
NETinfo is an ISO9001 company based in Cyprus with operations in London, Romania, Albania,
Russia, Chile, Peru, Columbia, Greece, and Ghana.
Challenge
NETinfo has multiple high-performance requirements for its NETteller e-banking platform,
including scalability, always-on availability, unshakable security, and full customizability. Since
many of NETinfo’s customers transact business in multiple countries, the solution must be
capable of supporting aggregated cross-border services. NETteller must also support multiple
jurisdictions, single sign-on across multiple banks, and multi-signature workflows. Because many
banks work with corporate and retail customers as well as consumers, they require a solution that
provides appropriate services and uniform customer policies to each customer sector.
“At a time when financial institutions around the world are experiencing economic challenges,”
says Polys Hadjikyriakos, NETinfo Sales Director, “we think it’s more important than ever to
provide cost-effective software solutions that help banks increase competitive advantage while
reducing operational costs.” When NETinfo first developed the NETteller e-banking platform,
Oracle was one of the primary databases used in the solution. Yet with sizable upfront licensing
fees and costly on-going support, Oracle drove up the cost of each bank’s initial investment and
significantly increased TCO. MySQL was also considered, but quickly rejected because it lacked
critical features such as online backup, point-in-time restore, and security features that control
access to critical data and auditing.
SUCCESS STORY
“We are very happy with the
Ingres/JBoss combination.
They are both mature
products we can trust
for our business-critical
application. , Since migrating
from Oracle, we have
realized significant cost
savings through the open
source business model – not
only with the upfront license
fees but with the overall
solution cost.”
SOLUTION
Today, the primary NETinfo e-banking
solution is built on Ingres Database, a leading
open source database for business-critical
applications. NETinfo relies on JBoss as its
de facto developing tool. “We are very happy
with the Ingres/JBoss combination. They are
both mature products we can trust for our
business-critical application. Since migrating
from Oracle, we have realized significant cost
savings through the open source business
model – not only with the upfront license fees
but with the overall solution costs,” reports
Hadjikyriakos.
Together, NETinfo and Ingres provide a singlesource
internet banking solution that can be
customized to meet the needs of individual
financial institutions. While NETinfo’s
first priority is to help financial customers
implement internet banking, clients are also
encouraged to integrate business intelligence
(BI) into the mix. To that end, NETinfo
advises customers to consider the Ingres
Icebreaker Business Intelligence Appliance
as either a standalone application or bundled
with the NETteller e-banking solution.
Currently, National Invest Bank of Ghana
is implementing Phase 1 of the NETinfo
NETteller e-banking solution with Ingres
Database embedded in the solution. This
bank plans to incorporate Ingres Icebreaker
Business Intelligence Appliance during
Phase 2 of this project. Additional banks
are preparing to implement NETteller using
Ingres Database during the second half of
2009.
RESULTS
Significantly lower initial investment
NETinfo allows its customers to choose their
databases. Some insist on Oracle, and NETinfo
will customize the NETteller application with
it if necessary. However, the customer will be
required to pay a significantly higher amount
in licensing fees to Oracle. With the Ingresbased
bundle, a single point of support for the
entire NETteller application is included in the
cost of the solution. “In choosing Ingres,” says
Hadjikyriakos, “our customers save at least 20
percent in initial costs.”
Implementations are easier and more efficient.
The NETteller application gets up and running
faster, providing competitive benefit to the
financial institute and its customers more
quickly and efficiently. Additionally the
NETteller ASP model can support one or many
installations for streamlined scalability.
Customers are not the only ones who enjoy
the efficiency of Ingres Database. In-house
developers for NETinfo are very pleased with
it as well. Says Hadjikyriakos, “The developers
came to accept Ingres Database and the JBoss
Application Server almost immediately. They
are very satisfied with the efficiency, flexibility,
and performance of this stack.”
Availability and security are assured
“We are quite impressed with both the
availability and security provided by Ingres
Database,” reports Hadjikyriakos. “Our
financial customers cannot afford even a
minute of downtime, so we have to ensure
24x7 availability. Ingres reliably provides this
functionality. Naturally, security is a musthave
for any internet banking application, and
Ingres provides built-in security features to
ensure protection of private data.”
SUCCESS STORY
Flexibility helps lower TCO
NETinfo is committed to being an open standards ISV, and strives to develop products that are platform-independent,
helping customers run their NETteller application on just about any system. Ingres Database helps NETinfo uphold its
commitment by being extremely flexible in interfacing with third-party products and integrating with existing back-end
systems.
Support for customers and in-house developers is superior
Hadjikyriakos feels that the partnership between NETinfo and Ingres is “near perfect,” and support has a lot to do with
his statement. Whether an in-house developer or a financial customer needs support, Ingres can be relied upon to provide
what’s needed. “We have a need. We call Ingres. They help. It’s that simple every time.”
