Sustenance by Lyn Dobrin Successful Summer Picnics Suggestions and a Recipe Cheryl Stair is my go-to person for ideas on picnicking on Long Island. Since 1986, she and husband John Kowalenko have been offering beautiful and delicious fare for parties on the east end. Art of Eating’s Warm Potato Salad with Herbs 2 pounds local organic potatoes, Yukon or Fingerlings, whichever is available ½ cup finely chopped local celery ½ cup finely diced local shallots 2 tablespoons chopped chervil 2 tablespoons chopped parsley 2 tablespoons chopped dill 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1/3 cup cider vinegar 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste Place washed potatoes in pot large enough to cover with one inch of water. Season with salt, should taste like ocean water. Bring to boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook until the potatoes are tender when pierced with fork. Drain very well. While potatoes are draining, mix celery, shallots, mustard, herbs, vinegar and oil in separate bowl. While potatoes are still warm but cool enough to handle, cut into 1-1 ½ inch cubes. Add vinaigrette and season with salt and pepper to taste. Art of Eating’s Grilled Fava Beans This is so simple it is not really a recipe. It is however a way to enjoy fava beans with none of the work usually associated with this king of the legumes-world. <strong>Light</strong>ly rub washed fava beans in their shell with extra virgin olive oil. Lay out favas on grill once coals have turned white. Do not place directly over coals but to the side of the grill top for indirect heat. When shells begin to blister and brown turn over and cook until other side begins to blister and seams of shell just start to split. Remove from heat and sprinkle with Amagansett Sea Salt. Years before Angelina Jolie, Marilyn Monroe’s puckered lips adorned in bright red lipstick set the standard for the feminine embouchement. Contrast that with other celebrity images of lips gone wrong like Lisa Rinna, who revealed the secret behind her overly plump lips as silicone. The fear of the “trout pout” or “duck lips” is a concern I must allay in any patient having lip augmentation. Just as I assure them, I can also assure you - lip augmentation can give you the fuller, voluptuous lips you want in a way that looks entirely natural. So if you want bigger, more beautiful lips, here is some good advice on how to go about it. Seek expert advice. Not everyone with a syringe is qualified to deliver the lips you want. There is definitely some art and science behind any treatment you receive and nowhere is that more true than with the lips. An intimate knowledge and preservation of the proper lip anatomy is the key to keeping your lips looking natural while growing in size. At a minimum, the person you entrust with your lips should be a board certified facial plastic surgeon, general plastic surgeon, or dermatologist who performs a lot of injectable and surgical treatments on the lips. As with any procedure, it is a good idea to see some before and after pictures first. Dwell on the details. The lips are complex anatomic structures that have different components. When I see a patient for lip augmentation, my discussion with them goes way beyond size. I routinely educate patients about the components of the lip like the white roll, philtral columns, and vermilion. Through this educational process and discussion I can determine whether the patient actually wants to make their lips bigger or rather just reshaped and more defined. Doing something temporary allows you to first try out your new lips and gauge if your provider can achieve the look you want. We now have very safe long-lasting fillers, like Juvederm, which work quite well in lip augmentation. Fillers are the best treatment to add definition to certain parts of the lips and they are also sometimes used in patients who have surgical lip augmentation with fat injections or V-Y advancement. Some patients actually elect to stick with fillers as their “permanent” solution for voluptuous lips. If you want permanent lip augmentation or change, know that there isn’t one “gold standard” procedure. Fat injections, V-Y lip advancement, lip implantation with dermal-fat-fascia or alloderm are all procedures that can permanently augment the lips. The choice of the procedure depends on your anatomy and the experience of your surgeon. Again, it is important in this situation to seek expert advice.
