CEREC: 3D Digital Dentistry
by David Yu, D.D.S.
The best dental care
George Washington
could find was chiseled
and carved in a carpenter’s
workshop. Nowadays,
any time-traveling
founding father seeking a toothy-grinned
makeover would be proud to find their
universal ideals adapted through the
embodiment of cuttingedge
3D digital dentistry
– CEREC.
CEREC has earned its
bragging rights as a master
device that seamlessly
CEREC, under my
direction, is a wonder
weapon ushering
a futuristic era of
automation in dentistry.
advertisement
weaves virtual-realistic
digital design with hyperaccurate
robotic sculpting
under experienced clinical guidance
to create the most naturally palatable,
bio-compatible, form-fitting, and ogleworthy
all-ceramic solutions to resurrect
damaged dentition from the ashes of
time and restore their youthful appeal
from days gone by. Although it is not a
panacea for all cases, CEREC is a revolutionary
step carrying dentistry across the
divide between trials and errors of the
past and predictable outcomes of the future.
Not only has CEREC pioneered the
elegant single-visit answer to the ageold
paradox of providing quality without
compromising convenience, it has also
risen to every challenge on the terms of
lab-made orthodoxy in strength, durability,
versatility, and esthetics,
then surpassed them
with superior value and
an inimitable jaw-dropping
wow-factor.
In the twilight of the labcentric
paradigm, CEREC,
under my direction, is a
wonder weapon ushering
a futuristic era of automation in dentistry,
leading the way to a horizon of tantalizing
possibilities, and steadfastly shaping
treatment experiences for a new world of
on-demand needs and timeless results.
Good Advice
Lymphedema Awareness
Following Breast Cancer Therapy
by Carol Hohowski, OTR/L, CHT, CLT
After breast cancer treatment,
localized swelling
is normal and should resolve
with time. However,
the patient may also be at
risk of developing lymphedema,
which is a more serious form of
swelling that affects the arm or trunk on
the same side of the body
as the breast cancer. It is
important to realize that
the symptoms of lymphedema
may begin months
or even years after breast
cancer treatment. When
lymphedema is diagnosed
early, resolving lymphedema
with treatment is
much more successful.
Education, weekly visual comparisons, and
monthly measurements of key areas of the
upper extremity can empower the patient
to recognize the signs and symptoms in
their earliest stages.
The early signs and symptoms of lymphedema
are swelling, a feeling of heaviness,
It is important to realize
that the symptoms of
lymphedema may begin
months or even years after
breast cancer treatment.
advertisement
decreased flexibility, aching or general
discomfort, skin tightness and hardening
of the skin of the upper extremity. By
performing weekly visual comparison and
taking monthly measurements the patient
can establish a baseline from which she
can monitor any changes.
On a weekly basis the patient can compare
hands looking for
pockets of swelling between
the knuckles or
on the back of the hand,
compare the contours
of the lower and upper
arms and bring the finger
tips to rest on the
shoulders to compare
elbows. Monthly measurements
can be taken
around the biceps, elbow, forearm, wrist
and knuckles.
Consult with your physician or certified
lymphedema therapist (CLT) if you notice
any of these symptoms or changes in your
upper extremity.
