Lymphedema Awareness
Following Breast Cancer Therapy

After breast cancer treatment,
localized swelling
is normal and should resolve
with time. However,
the patient may also be at
risk of developing lymphedema,
which is a more serious form of
swelling that affects the arm or trunk on
the same side of the body
as the breast cancer. It is
important to realize that
the symptoms of lymphedema
may begin months
or even years after breast
cancer treatment. When
lymphedema is diagnosed
early, resolving lymphedema
with treatment is
much more successful.
Education, weekly visual comparisons, and
monthly measurements of key areas of the
upper extremity can empower the patient
to recognize the signs and symptoms in
their earliest stages.

are swelling, a feeling of heaviness,

decreased flexibility, aching or general
discomfort, skin tightness and hardening
of the skin of the upper extremity. By
performing weekly visual comparison and
taking monthly measurements the patient
can establish a baseline from which she
can monitor any changes.
On a weekly basis the patient can compare
hands looking for
pockets of swelling between
the knuckles or
on the back of the hand,
compare the contours
of the lower and upper
arms and bring the finger
tips to rest on the
shoulders to compare
elbows. Monthly measurements
can be taken
around the biceps, elbow, forearm, wrist
and knuckles.
Consult with your physician or certified
lymphedema therapist (CLT) if you notice
any of these symptoms or changes in your
upper extremity.
