A Short Biography of <strong>Meher</strong> <strong>Baba</strong><br />
Merwan Sheriar Ira ni, know n as Me her Ba ba, was born in<br />
Poona, I ndia, on Fe bruary 25, 1 894, of Persian pare nts. Hi s<br />
father, Sheriar Irani, was of Zoroastrian faith and a true seeker of<br />
God. Merwan went to a Chr istian high school in Po ona and<br />
later attended Deccan College. In 1913, while in c ollege, a<br />
momentous event o ccurred in h is l ife . . . th e meeting with<br />
Hazrat <strong>Baba</strong>jan, an ancien t Mohamedan woman and one of<br />
the five Pe rfect Ma sters of th e Ag e. <strong>Baba</strong>jan gav e him God-<br />
Realization and made him aware of his high spiritual destiny.<br />
Eventually he was d rawn to seek out another Perfect<br />
Master, Upasni Maharaj, a Hindu who liv ed in Sakori. During<br />
the next seven years Maharaj gav e Merwan "Gno sis" or Divine<br />
Knowledge. Thus Merwan attained s piritual Perfecti on. His<br />
spiritual mission began in 1921 when he drew together his first<br />
close disciples. It was these early disciples who gave him the<br />
name <strong>Meher</strong> <strong>Baba</strong>, which means "Compassionate Father."<br />
After years of intensive training of his disciples, <strong>Meher</strong><br />
<strong>Baba</strong> est ablished a colony near Ah mednagar that is called<br />
<strong>Meher</strong>abad. Here the Mas ter's work em braced a free school<br />
where spiritual training was stressed, a free hospital and dispensary,<br />
and shelters for the poor. No distinction was made between<br />
the high castes and the untouch ables; all mingled in comm on<br />
fellowship through the inspiration of the Master. To his disciples<br />
at <strong>Meher</strong>abad, who were of different castes and creeds, he gave a<br />
training of moral discipline, love for God, spiritual understanding<br />
and selfless service.<br />
