The Walnut welcomes PNC Arts Alive
as its Community Partner for In the Heights!
Walnut Street Theatre is a proud to have been
selected as a recipient of the prestigious 2013
PNC Arts Alive grant.
“The creativity of Philadelphia’s arts sector is
clearly evident in the innovative programs by PNC
Arts Alive grantees,” said Bill Mills, PNC regional
president for Philadelphia and Southern New
Jersey. “We set out to make
the arts more accessible and
challenged arts groups to help
people experience art in new
ways—to engage them now
and in the future. The region’s
performing arts community has
delivered.”
Sponsored by PNC Arts Alive,
Walnut’s community outreach
for In the Heights is a multifaceted,
audience development
initiative aimed at the Greater
Philadelphia Latino community.
The centerpiece of the project is Photo by John Vecchiolla.
two additional performances—
the first for adults in the Latino
community, and the second a student-matinee for
high schools in communities with dense Latino
populations. Each will feature a post-show discussion
with members of the cast and creative team, offering
an unforgettable evening of live theatre.
Kristin Prinn, executive director of L.U.C.Y.
(Lifting Up Camden’s Youth) Outreach, was thrilled
to learn about the community performances, stating
“The youth and staff of L.U.C.Y. Outreach are
Perry Young as Usnavi.
honored to have this opportunity to partner with the
Walnut Street Theatre. We are so appreciative of the
theater’s efforts to create a memorable experience
for local Latino inner city youth, enabling them to
see a musical for the first time. In the Heights is the
Broadway show that the youth have been asking to
go and see for the past five years, and you have now
made that dream a reality! This particular musical
has a theme of hope, change
and dreams, themes that are a
powerful and ever-present part
of the lives of Camden’s youth
each and every day.”
Joanna Otero-Cruz, executive
director of The Council of
Spanish Speaking Organizations,
Inc. (Concilio), saw the
significance of sharing this
production with Philadelphia’s
Latino community, commenting
“Concilio is excited to partner
with the Walnut Street Theatre
and bring awareness to the
importance of theatre and the
arts not only in Philadelphia but
in its Latino Community. The arts, music, dance, and
multiple ways of expression are extremely important
to human development and overall part of culture.”
