PALISADES ELEMENTARY
Dear Palisades Families,
The staff and I would like to acknowledge and applaud the work of Rhonda Zarosinski,
PALS President, PALS board members and the numerous parent and community
volunteers who work to support Palisades students. The efforts of PALS
supports students in countless ways throughout the school year.
This year PALS has provided funds to enhance curriculum, provide art and science
enrichment activities, author visits, assemblies, technology, and direct support for
classrooms. Our highly successful auction will enable us to replace 40 computers
including those in Lab 2 with new computers with flat screen monitors. We will
also purchase 5 document cameras with LCD projector and light box for each. This
new technology will be used in classrooms for teacher and student use. We will
also purchase replacement cartridges for the color laser printer in the library so that
teachers may have greater use for student work.
Some of the other items that will be purchased through auction funds include materials
for teaching teams such as notebooks, class novel sets, writing prompts, literacy
elements, spell checkers, and science videos to enhance and enrich the District
adopted curriculum. In addition, needed materials and supplies will be purchased
for the PE and music program. Mr. Nguyen will benefit with a new backpack
blower and drill, and the workroom will receive a new large paper cutter. Proceeds
from the auction will also be used to support our enrichment activities and program
over the next two years.
The real champions are Palisades students who benefit from our well-rounded educational
program because of the hard work and efforts of the PALS Board and volunteers.
Please accept our sincere gratitude for the many hours of planning, handson
work, and implementation of fundraisers to support staff and students. You are AWESOME!!
Other Items of Note
Two pieces of information went home with students on Wednesday, April 30 th : Information on Palisades Summer Reading and Math
Program and student placement process information. Palisades families will have first opportunity to sign up for summer classes until
May 15 th . After May 15 th classes will open to all Lake Oswego parents. Sign up is online through the district website. If you have questions
please contact Dawn DePalma at the school.
Students also brought home a letter outlining our student placement process, and optional Parent Input Form on Learning Environment to
complete if parents would like to provide input. Completion of the form is optional, and invites parents an opportunity to provide input
from their viewpoint.
Many thanks to Doug Rich, Rosemary DiCandilo, and Christina Hardy our Earth PALS coordinators for Palisades Earth Day assemblies.
Hello Palisades Families,
On behalf of the Foundation I want to update you on your investment into our children's education.
Currently 68% of Palisades families have made a contribution! Thank-you for investing in our
kids’ education & making the Lake Oswego School district strong!! We are currently ahead of participation
levels over this time last year. However, we do need to attain our goal to continue the strong tradition
of exceptional schools and to maintain small class size. Now that we're through tax time, please
send your contribution to:
Palisades Market Scrip Cards
Raise Money for Schools
Palisades Market will sell scrip cards (ie, gift cards) at the
checkout stands again in May. The market will donate 5% of the
amount of gift card purchases to local schools. If you shop at
Palisades Market, buying the cards is a really easy way to raise
money for Palisades School. On your way out, simply purchase a
gift card to use the next time you shop and be sure to tell the
checker which school (Palisades, of course!) you want to receive
the donation. Voila – you just raised money for your child’s
school!

And the Winners Are…
The results of the spring scrip raffle are:
Lupe Bassett - webkinz
Sally Willis – movie night
Lois Moll - $25 gift card to Palisades Market
Thanks to everyone who bought scrip the last few months! There are only 6 more
weeks of school. If you haven’t bought scrip yet, it’s time to try it! See the school website
at http://pal.loswego.k12.or.us for more information on scrip.
Earth Day Assembly Focuses on “Sustainable” Farming and Being a “Locovore”
The Earth Pals Committee would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of our Earth Day assembly
– Barb Randall and Laura Masterson for their informative and interactive presentations; Clackamas County Farm
Forestry Association for its generous donation of tree seedlings; Dennis’ Seven Dees (on McVey Ave.) for its generous
donation of vegetable seed packets; Kordell’s Produce (on Rosemont Rd.) for its generous donation of coupons
for a vegetable or strawberry plant; Principal Whitten for enabling the Committee to put together the assembly;
Lisa Balick for her help in securing the seed packets; Mr. Jarone and his students – Andi Bisbjerg, Shelby Bylsma,
Nick Cook, Trevor Ferrell (two shifts!), Mitch Maynes, and Quincy Ryan – for their help counting cars; all the
teachers who helped with record-keeping; Kavita Rajani, a former Palisades student, for calculating the amount of
carbon dioxide that was emitted from cars during our two-week experiment; and last, but not least, all the students
and parents that walked, biked, or bused to school. Thanks for all your efforts!
These terms were introduced to us by Laura Masterson and Barb Randall at our Earth Day assembly on Monday,
April 21. Farmer Laura discussed her involvement with the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program at
Luscher Farm. CSA is a membership farming enterprise that allows consumers to purchase locally-produced foods
that have been grown in a “sustainable” -- able to be maintained -- manner. These methods include using organic
fertilizer, eliminating weeds by pulling them rather than using chemicals, having horses pull tractors, using tractors
that run on electricity rather than gas, providing habitats for insects that support crop production, and rotating
crops to prevent the spread of diseases in the soil.
Ms. Randall, a former Palisades mom and a well-known cooking instructor in our community, is an enthusiastic supporter
and advocate of the CSA program. She would definitely call herself a “locovore” -- someone who eats locally
raised foods. Locally produced foods are tastier and retain their nutrients better than those that have been
transported from far away. Ms. Randall focused her discussion on ways to preserve fruits and vegetables – by canning,
freezing, drying, and pickling, so that they may be enjoyed year-round. She also brought fruits (in the form
of frozen blueberries in a smoothie) and vegetables (including sprouting purple broccoli) for students to sample.
Ms. Randall’s tasty presentation was a tough act to follow. We concluded our Earth Day assembly with the results
of our Walk/Bike/Bus to School event. More than 200 students participated; resulting in a 67% participation rate.
The week prior to our Walk/Bike/Bus event, we had approximately 576 cars arrive at school in the morning
(averaging 115 cars/day). The following week, we had 399 cars (averaging 80 cars/day). Fewer cars on our roads
result in less air pollution and traffic congestion.

PALISADES SUMMER READING, WRITING AND MATH PROGRAM
Summer Reading, Writing and Math programs are highly effective methods for students to review and build on their reading, math and writing skills
during the summer months; the reading portion of this summer school program uses Read-Well or Read-Naturally curriculum. Sessions are generally
population; as a result, the number of sessions, session length and variety of classes will vary.
The summer school program generally begins the week of 6/23 through 8/8 and meets every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; The expectation is
that students will attend daily with some allowances for vacation. You can find out more about your school’s summer program by contacting the
program organizer or by viewing the classes available online in our summer catalog. To view and register your student, go to http://
