<strong>Palisades</strong> <strong>Adult</strong> <strong>Leadership</strong> (<strong>PALS</strong>)General Meeting MinutesNovember 23, 2009President Ellie Combs called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.Ballot Measures 66 and 67• Bill Swindells and Linda Brown from the LO <strong>School</strong> Board spoke about the upcoming January26 th measures• Defend Oregon is the group championing these measures. Measures would increase taxes forbusinesses and individuals• One of the measures is for businesses and one is for high-earning individuals• We had a $7.2 million shortfall this year. 22 teachers lost, and all district teachers gave uptheir cost of living increase• If these measures do not pass, we will lose another 3 million = more teachers lost, with largerclass sizes and fewer electives offered at the higher grades• 33% of LO households have kids currently. Concern is convincing families without school-agekids to pass these measures. We must use the real estate argument (desirability of schooldistrict increases your home value). Exceptional schools contribute to an exceptionalcommunity = livability.• Our kids are college bound, busy, and focused. We offer bells and whistles so they can getthere well-prepped. Music, athletics, drama, etc. We would like to sustain these offerings• Parent volunteers can promote the passage of these measures, but school district staff cannot• Talk to your neighbors, write to the LO Review, etc.• 60% of the funding goes to K-12 education (3 million). Rest goes to safety, corrections<strong>Palisades</strong> Cookbook• Laura Kay is the mind behind the healthy <strong>Palisades</strong> cookbook• Laura needs <strong>PALS</strong> approval to proceed with the cookbook• Each book costs $3.75 if we order 300 of them. $3.85 for 200. $5.15 each for 100. Sell for$10 each with profits going to the school• 92 recipes submitted. Extra bonuses include kid crafts recipes, cleanup tips, gifts from thekitchen ideas• Great stocking stuffer. Hard binder with coil /plastic binding – lays flat. We can sell anyleftovers at the auction• First down payment due to publisher in January $625• Vote after the meeting by the board to approve/rejectCommittee Chair Updates• <strong>Palisades</strong> 2010 Auction: Dusty: Auction is March 6 th . Traci Daskalos has all of her classbasket people lined up. Basket themes are trickling in. No update on class projects.• Enrichment: <strong>Palisades</strong> OMSI family night April 26 th – Monday night. Penny Drive starts after thebreak.• Sally Foster: Susan said we made $5100, hoping for $8K, but considering the economy, this isokay. Next year no catalogs, all online.• Community Relations: Diana Harrell has been keeping the bulletin board up. Let her know ifyou have anything you’d like posted• Yearbook: Shannon Huggins talked about yearbook. New thing this year – you can submitphotos online or email them! Shannon will put together a newsletter blurb. Last day to submitphotos march 30 th . Will be for sale after the first of the yearPrincipal’s Update• Dec. 10 th is the H1N1 vaccination clinic. Clinic will run all day, and 5 parent volunteers are stillneeded.o Families are wondering if they should still get the dose if they’ve had the flu or a priorshot. Email the school with any and all questions. Email Carol or the nurse.• Tracy Sandor went to the teachers staff meeting about the auction – lots of donations of time,activities, baskets, etc. Thank you teachers!• Science – Hallinan has a state of the art science lab. Our 6 th graders are going there nextweek for 2 days to learn about conservation, ecosystems, water. In March they will do fieldstudies at 3 different local water areas• Our kitchen has become a pilot kitchen for conservation. No more paper boats or paperproducts. We will go back to plastic trays and will recycle! We have changed from condimentpackets to pump bottles.SCRIP Account Balance - $21,000 and Miscellaneous Budget Items• SCRIP earnings were originally designated for playground equipment. We need decide if itshould go to equipment or not. We had advertised to the parents that SCRIP money would goto the playground, so we need to honor that commitment.• Motion made to allocate money and pursue equipment. Motion seconded and approved.• $1300 earned from PACE this month. We will receive checks monthly• $577 from the last Pizza Schmizza fundraiser. Another one scheduled for January 21 st (next<strong>PALS</strong> meeting).ECO NETWORK Introduction• Doug Rich is our <strong>Palisades</strong> representative to ECO <strong>School</strong>s Network. Doug also helps runEarth Pals.• We will have Earth Day this year.• ECO network is a network within LO schools where we learn what other schools are doing, ifthey have curriculum to support science lessons, recycling efforts.• Our participation has been low key in past years – we have been focusing on our nativegarden and earth day activities.• We can be as “green” as we want to be.• For example, <strong>Lake</strong> Grove has a program similar to Art Lit but focuses on environmental issues– taught by parents. Step 1: <strong>Palisades</strong> needs to apply and become acertified “green school”. Can Doug take the lead on this or can we install someone. Teacherinvolvement is required, too.• Step 2: We need to advertise that Earth Pals is more than just the native garden, and involvesgreen living, recycling. Get Cub scouts, brownies, etc to help care for the garden. Maybe doan assembly to get the kids involved. More to come.New or Other Business• Next Thursday is team spirit day (Civil War). Wear your OSU, UO or other team colors!• At the next Board meeting, we will discuss the name “<strong>PALS</strong>” and our PTA/PTO/PSO status.Cookbook Vote – <strong>PALS</strong> Board only• After discussion, the board has decided to approve the expenditure, but not the full amount.Instead of ordering the full 300 books, we will preorder 200 books.• Price needs to be set at $10 each.• Motion made to approve 200 books with $770 from <strong>PALS</strong>. Motion seconded and approved.A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.
