PBS UpdateWhat is PBS? Positive Behavior Supports is a school-wide system that includes proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behavior to create a positive, safe school environment. Reinforcingpositive social behavior is an important part of a student’s educational experience. Teaching behavioralexpectations and rewarding students for following them is a positive approach than waiting for misbehaviorto occur before responding. We want to reinforce a climate where appropriate behavior is the norm. Our PBS is focused on three principals: Be respectful, be responsible, and be safe. This is the third year theLake Oswego school district is training PBS teams at all schools. Dr. Dale R. Myers, a well respected consultantand adjunct faculty member at the University of Oregon is leading the training. This years Palisades PBSteam includes: Bree Anna Brewer, Nicolle Landau, Reg Jarone, Deb Somers, Gale McLain, Teresa Flanigan,Kathy Taylor and Carol Whitten. The team looks forward to continued sessions with Dr. Dale this winter andspring. This year we have completed a “Rules Rodeo” of behavior expectations for recess, and inside schoolbehavior. Proud Puma slips have become the norm where students can earn a reward being caught in the actof being safe, respectful, and responsible. Teachers provide students a lesson each week and reinforce specifictopics such as problem solving strategies, and reviewing Kelso’s wheel. This year students participated in aposter contest that was quick and easy, describing the three school rules of safe, responsible, and respectful onconstruction paper. Posters were reviewed by buddy classes and students voted for the best representation ofthe three rules. Each classroom had one finalist and teachers voted for the final winners. Posters have beenreproduced for the hallways. The poster winners are: Zoe Clegg (The 3 Be’s are. . . ), Mackenzie Sandor (BeSafe! Always remember to slide down feet first. . .), and Jillian Martin (Criss Cross Applesauce – Be Respectful)Congratulations! We look forward to our continued work on BPS and embracing the Districts Respectful Culture Plan.
