BANDS WANTED FOR LIVE MUSIC 6 NIGHTS A WEEK 

SOME BANDS - 

Are you getting just greedy 

Now everyone has to make a living now a 

days, at the minute this seems to be harder 

and harder in the current climate and industry 

that we are all in but surely some 

people out there have some sense You 

can pick up good national touring bands 

that are worth far more than they ask!! It’s 

their passion, its not what they do to remember 

the good old days,they crash in 

the van until you say its ok we can sort out 

accommodation because they’ve travelled 

200 miles to play tonight. Yet you have local 

covers or original bands that want to 

charge you 300 to 600 pounds just to play 

a gig that they have travelled 6 miles to play! 

Who will only pull in a few 30 people who 

would pay to see their mates play in the 

first place Do bands not work out the 

maths in these situations, to put on a live 

gig, add door staff costs, add bar staff + 

sound guy + maintaining pa costs, plus all 

the advertising that venues do for your gig. 

Once you add all this up and then when

you add on your fee. Would you really pay 

that much out if you were hosting the gig 

On your fan base Bands need to stop 

putting their prices up or else they are 

going to price themselves out of it completely. 

I think some venues have become 

soft with their approach and if people were 

to adopt a concept that other venues do, 

bands get paid per the crowd that they 

bring in. If a band doesn’t bring in anyone 

then they don’t get any money,based on a 

leaflet system where they get £1 per every 

flyer that comes in, no minimum numbers 

to get payment. As it stands at the minute 

with bands increasing their price because 

they aren’t getting as many gigs (due to 

this recession) they are feeding the circle 

of not getting gigs because their price is too 

high to warrant the gig in the first place.

THE TAILGATERS 

Formed in Bristol after playing and gelling 

together at a jam night in early 2008, ‘The 

Tailgaters’ have developed into a power 

trio playing hot rock, blues, funk, with the 

interest and demand for the band already 

seeing them playing 15 + gigs a month. 

A live album is scheduled before the years 

end so go along to one of their shows and 

you could be on the album. The band have 

been playing mainly in the South-West with 

a couple of Northern tours, the band are 

looking to go nationwide in 2009 and also 

open Europe. A traditional Bass, Drums, 

Guitar/lead vocals line up brings together 

three fine musicians. On drums from Chicago, 

Mike Wiedrich who you may know 

from playing with Curtis Knight / Eddie 

Martin / Gwyn Ashton to name a few. 

Bass guitar is filled by Patrick Farrell who 

has consistently been part of some of 

Bristol’s hardest working bands. Guitar and 

vocal duties are more than covered by the 

intense and exceptional playing of Ben 

Fletcher. Original tracks are being written 

with the live show seeing the band roll 

through exciting hard edged versions of 

songs, from their ever expanding repertoire, 

by artists such as ZZ Top, Doobie 

Brothers, Santana, Aerosmith, Lynrd Skyntd, 

Jeff Beck, Stevie Wonder, Prince and 7 Litchen Street, Barnstaple,

North Somerset’s Big Band ‘Mendip 

Swing’ will be appearing at Congresbury 

Village Hall, Congresbury on the 29th November 

2008. The evening starts at 8 pm 

and finishes at midnight, a bar will be provided.

door. Part of the bands ethos is to provide 

an opportunity for musicians of all ages

MONKEY BUSINESS 

Sunday 20th September was a really hot 

sunny day, bringing out the day trippers to 

Burnham on Sea, filling the car parks and 

streets, making car parking a pain! I was 

heading for The Old Pier Tavern that afternoon 

where every Sunday from 2 till 5 pm 

you will find a different Jazz band playing 

live. This afternoon ‘Saffron Monkey’ from 

Weston-Super-Mare who are Cliff Moore 

on Guitar, Richie Blake on Bass, Danny 

Cox, Drums and Steve Hacking Sax and 

Flute playing their style of experimental 

Jazz/Funk, this is their fun band! These 

guys are excellent musicians in their own 

right, and play together really well. When I 

eventually found somewhere to park they 

where well into their first set, I can see the 

attraction with them playing this music, and 

they where clearly enjoying themselves as 

was the audience. In the past year they 

have become very popular, even taking 

time to produce an album ‘Evolution’ which

Young band take action 

An up and coming rock/metal band from 

the Cullumpton/Exeter area of Devon, who 

are all in their teens, ‘Hailing Star’ are truly 

kicking ass!! Formed in early 2008 they 

haven’t been playing together long but already 

they are creating a following, with a 

lot of interest from the local music scene. 

The band Elliot - lead guitar & vocals, Matt 

- drums & backing vocals, Luke - Rhythm 

guitar with Helen - bass and backing vocals, 

play a mix of covers by BMFV, Triviam, 

Black Tide, Papa Roach, Green Day 

etc... Plus their own material, which they 

continue to write and produce. They have 

got together to record and promote a single 

‘Last Heroes’ which is dedicated to their 

friend rifleman Daniel Caffey and to soldiers 

in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was recorded 

at The Music Hall in Newton Abbott 

and will be released as a single to raise 

money for the charity ‘Operation Braveheart’ 

that helps injured soldiers and their

FACTS ABOUT AMPLIFIERS 

Or did you know Part one 

If you use an electric guitar or electro 

acoustic then you will be using an amplifier 

which will come in various sizes from a 

small 10 watt practice to anything larger!! 

This article is really to give you a better 

idea of what you are really using and my be 

of help with a bigger purchase in the future. 

An amplifier takes a tiny electrical current 

and turns it into a much bigger current that 

will move loudspeaker cones. The first devise 

that could do this was a valve, and the 

‘amplification tube’ was patented in about 

1906 (oddly enough by two people , who 

were working on the same idea but independently.) 

The early audio amplifiers were 

huge devices with each section of the circuit 

forming a separate unit in a rack. The 

first known electric guitar design dates 

back to the early thirty’s, but the first purpose-built 

guitar amplifiers appeared in 

America in the 1940’s and were modified 

from radio set circuits. Leo Fender had 

started ‘Fender Radio Services’ in the early 

1940’s as Radio was the then modern 

technology of it’s day. The first guitar amplifier 

to use transistors, available to buy 

commercially was the Burns Orbit combo, 

made in Britain about 1963 (Burns being a 

top UK brand) The 40 watt combo sported 

a tremolo circuit and there were a number 

of variations, based on different speakers. 

At that time, this ground breaking design 

was more expensive than the valve combos 

on sale at the time! Where as today a 

valve combo will cost far more. Today guitarists 

spend a lot of time arguing with 

other guitarists whether valve amps are 

‘better’ than the many modern designs that 

seek to emulate the valve sound. This 

could be a complete waste of time as for a 

number of reasons like better could mean 

to be far more reliable in use or a better 

range of tones and many other possible, 

undefined criteria. 

This could be down to a personal thing, but 

generally most top guitar players will use 

valve as a better sound. Even the term 

‘valve’ is misleading, because they are 


used in very different ways, in different 

designs. As the name states, a valve really 

does regulate a flow in a valve amp, but it’s 

a flow of electrons, not water. Inside the 

valve is a cathode and a plate, with a grid 

in between. Electrons flow from the cathode 

to the plate. The grid in between controls 

the flow of electrons, hence the 

valve-like action. The cathode has to be 

warmed for this to happen, so there is a 

small heater at the bottom of each valve. 

This is what you are turning on when you 

put the amp into standby. Very small voltages 

applied to the grid cause big changes 

in the electron flow (current) between the 

cathode and the plate, that’s amplification. 

The voltages are determined by a variable 

input, an electric guitar! You might assume 

that when you’re not playing at all, the grid 

is at ov but this is not so. In a power valve, 

it is likely to be somewhere around - 40v. 

The precise voltage used varies from case 

to case and is called the ‘bias setting’. 

In a Class A circuit, the valve is never idle. 

The bias is set so that the valve is passing 

current at all times. The first known class A 

guitar amp is the Vox AC15, introduced in 

1956. Class B amps can produce a lot 

more power than class A. They use two 

power valves in a push pull configuration or 

multiples of these pairs for higher powered 

configurations. One of the pair handles the 

positive side of the wave form, while the 

other handle the negative. The bias is set 

so that the valve is idle in between times. 

In reality, this arrangement doesn’t sound 

so good because there is unwanted distortion 

of the waveform at the crossover point 

where one valve stops working and the 

opposite half of the pair kicks into life. 

We will continue next month, meanwhile if 

you are looking to purchase a new amplifier 

remember guitars do have a sound of 

their own, take your guitar with you when 

buying a new amp, for you could try out in 

the shop using one of theirs, get home and 

find you are not satisfied with the sound!! 

A good music shop will want you to buy 

what you are looking for, since there is the 

repeat business, of strings etc.....

Where are they now 

On the April ‘06 cover we featured 

‘START!’ Who had appeared on the April 

‘05 cover as ‘The Cover Up’ but not long 

after their female singer left, so Drummer 

Dave became the singer, change of name 

etc... They have recently taken on a new 

drummer and Dave has become the singer, 

so the band are still out working. This 

issue was 28 pages, with a touch of red. 

May ‘06 had the excellent and very talented 

‘Steel Regression’ who folded late 2007 

due to female singers coming and going. 

Ian has never had that much luck with 

females!! Early 2008 Ian formed a duo 

‘Quite Brazen’ with singer Shelly Phillips 

they sound very good so better luck this 

time Ian. On June ‘06 the very talented 

couple Fran & Duncan ‘Two Die For’ who 

are very popular and very busy, still working 

today, Fran sometimes sings solo and 

Duncan has recently formed ‘The Ping & I’ 

duo. Well worth checking out. Inside we 

had a feature on ‘Wilderland’ excellent entertainer, 

again worth checking out. 

The July ‘06 issue featured ‘Elliot Hall’ on 

the front cover, who was about to launch 

his first solo album at The Louisiana in 

Bristol. Elliot used to write for the Scrumpy 

each month until he became so famous 

and busy!! He has since recorded and 

released another album, which you can 

buy or download single tracks. 

The August ‘06 front cover featured ‘Bone 

Idle’ from Burnham on Sea, Somerset, still 

playing today. We also featured ‘The Doctor 

Goodthyme Band’ from Christchurch, 

Dorset plus Glastonbury Music shop celebrated 

20 years in business. At this period 

the magazine was still improving and 

changing with more gigs being sent in. 

September ‘06 front cover featured the 

busy and popular Bristol based band ‘The 

Worried Men’ who recently had a set to 

with part of the band forming ‘The Tailgaters’ 

with blues guitarist ‘Ben Fletcher’. 

Jamie is still out there playing as ‘The 


Worried Men’. This cover proved to us that 

the magazine was hitting the mark promoting 

LIVE MUSIC with the advertising coming 

in from a wider area. The October ‘06 

issue featured ‘Alex Lipinski’ who is at 

present at college, but still when available 

working with his brother Adam as ‘Lipinski’, 

I recently during the summer came across 

Alex in a studio, recording an album. It was 

at this point when we became involved with 

a web site agreement that was all one 

sided!! Their’s! Also that fat tart Tank of 

Rocker’s Live stopped paying for his adverts!! 

(and Bands by all accounts) He has 

now closed down. On Novembers cover 

‘Walking By Myself’ from Bristol who is a 

very popular and busy musician, you have 

only to look at the gig listings (all areas that 

is) to see how popular Steve is. It was also 

at this period that Bob Garrett was writing 

Bobs Travels plus Martin Jones was 

putting on Rock n Roll/Rockabilly at The 

Market House, WSM (sadly Martins no 

longer their) November also saw the debut 

gig of ‘Reoffender’ (formerly Evenfly) 

‘The Morris Brothers’ from South Devon, 

graced the December ‘06 cover. Great 

band still gigging and very popular, at 

present as a three piece. Back cover 

‘Lipinski’ with South Dorset’s ‘Stomping 

Dave Allen’ on the back cover of January 

‘07 and Weston-Super-Mare’s ‘Robert 

Clarke’ on the front cover. It was at this 

point we took out the red ink and reverted 

back to black & white. Glamour hit the front 

cover of the February issue with three girls 

from Vamps pole and lap dancing club, 

W.S.M highlighting the brilliant Rock memorabilia 

collection all round the club. (This 

has now been moved to The Rock Gardens, 

Orchard Street, Weston-Super- 

Mare) The back cover featured ‘Silverback’ 

who are still out playing, functions and 

weddings. The very talented ‘James Bennett’ 

featured on March ‘07 cover, James 

teaches guitar as well as playing in bands, 

most recently can be found playing in a 

Police Tribute. Back cover ‘Trouble & 

Strife’ who have gone down to a four piece.

BACK TO THE SIXTIES 

THE TROGGS from Andover 

The group formed as ‘The Troglodytes’ in 

1964 in the small town of Andover in 

Hampshire, which has still kept it’s small 

town character, even with all the changes 

since then. The original members of the 

band were singer/guitarist Dave Wright, 

bass player Reg Ball (Presley), drummer 

Ronnie Bullis (Bond) and guitarist Howard 

Mansfield. Both Mansfield and Wright left 

the newly formed band and were replaced 

by Pete Staples and Chris Britton. It was 

then that Reg Ball moved from bass to lead 

vocals and changed his name to Presley. 

In 1965 they were signed by Larry Page, 

‘The Kinks’ manager, who had formed 

Page One Records, it was at this time that 

their name was shortened to ‘The Troggs’. 

Page leased them to CBS Records for their 

debut single ‘Lost Girl’. Their second release 

‘Wild Thing’ (written by Chip Taylor), 

which with the help of Television exposure 

on ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’ Saturday 

night prime time TV then, reaching No 2 in 

the UK charts and No 1 in the U S in June 

1966. It’s combination of a simple heavy 

guitar riff and flirtatious lyrics helped it to 

quickly become a garage rock standard. 

Compared to today’s studio time, then it 

was recorded in one complete take! Because 

of a dispute over U S distribution 

rights, ‘Wild Thing’ was released along with 

their first album of the same name, on two 

labels, Fontana and Atco. Even though the 

single made no 1 and the album sold well, 

the bands success in the U S was limited 

by not touring there until 1968. They also 

had a number of other hits, including ‘With 

A Girl Like You’, which made No 1 in July 

1966, ‘I Can’t Control Myself’, UK No 2 in 

September ‘66 (this was also their second 

and final dual release in the US, with Fontana 

retaining the right to all subsequent 

releases. ‘Any Way You Want Me’ hit no 10 

in December ‘06 with ‘Night Of The Long 

Grass’ at No 17 in May ‘67 and ‘Love is all 

Around’ making No 5 in October ‘67 and 

the U S NO 7 in February ‘68. 


In 1991 ‘Love is all Around’ was covered by 

R. E. M. during live performances and was 

released later that year as a B-side on their 

‘Radio Song’ single. They also performed 

an acoustic version of the song on MTV 

Unplugged. Then in 1994, Scottish band 

‘Wet, Wet, Wet’s version of the song spent 

fifteen weeks at number one in the UK after 

its inclusion in the film ‘Four Weddings and 

a Funeral’. A modified version of ‘Love is all 

Around’ was featured in the film ‘Love Actually’ 

(2003), which was performed by 

actor Bill Nighy. Sadly by March 1969 the 

band split up, due mainly to the lack of 

chart success, various members released 

solo singles and Chris Britten released a 

solo album ‘As I Am’ the same year. The 

band later reformed with former ‘Plastic 

Penny’ bass player Tony Murray replacing 

Staples, and in 1974 after a period with 

Pye Records they re-united with Larry 

Page to try and recreate their success of 

the 60’s. They recorded the Beach Boys hit 

‘Good Vibrations’ which sadly did not capture 

the record buying public’s imagination. 

They also released a reggae version of 

‘Wild Thing’ which also failed to reach the 

charts. Interesting that they have a list of 

about 42 released singles and ep’s in the 

UK, including re-issues of their hits, sadly 

only ten made the U K charts. They also 

over the years have released about 22 

albums including compilations, not a bad 

total of work, for a band that was once 

considered a bunch of country bumpkins!! 

The band are still now out working with two 

of the original members and from 13th till 

30th November ‘08 will be on tour along 

with Spencer Davis + The Animals at various 

venue’s across the UK. They perform 

regularly throughout Europe and still have 

a small following, having been an important 

part of the swinging sixties. Sadly the 

Troggs original drummer Ronnie Bond died 

on 13th November ‘92 at the Royal Hampshire 

Hospital, Winchester. For more info

GRUMPY OLD MUSICIAN 

With the world in free fall of what we are 

told is the worst recession/down turn since 

the 1929 Wall Street crash, it’s nice to 

know that people are still working and collecting 

for charity appeals, not forgetting 

the people who donate their hard earned 

cash. In November see’s various venues 

starting a collection fund raiser for Cancer 

Research. Now most people in life will 

come into contact with a relation, friend or 

neighbour at some period that has been hit 

and affected by this terrible illness. The 

Rock Gardens, Orchard Street, Weston- 

Super-Mare are holding 3 charity events 

between now and Christmas to try and 

raise a BIG amount of cash for Cancer 

Charity’s so any bands willing to perform 

free then phone Darren on 01934 627179. 

Burnham Rock at the gigs they promote (all 

gigs free admission) will be collecting for 

donations between sets, so this is a worthy 

cause please give generously. (It is a fact 

that this country for its size is one of the 

Worlds big supporters of charities.) 

Changing the subject to a recent advertising 

campaign by the giant grocery chain 

‘Tesco’ shouting that they are the biggest 

discounters in the country! Bollocks!! I for 

one do what my mother did when I was a 

child, she used to (this is in the 1950’s & 

60’s) go round the shops comparing prices. 

I do the same, penny for penny ‘Asda’ is 

cheaper, but with less buy one get one free 

deals. Then ‘Morrisons’ are the store with 

more buy one get one free deals, but has 

the penny’s on more items, but the truth is, 

you have to shop round for the best deals. 

So after chasing round adding petrol and 

ware and tear to your car, how much do 

you really save But then we have been 

paying over the odds for our food for years, 

why, well who has been paying for all these 

nice new out of town stores, we have, since 

it’s all been paid for out of PROFITS! 

Smaller profits, then no large out of town 

stores. Ah ha I hear you cry, but isn’t that 

what we wanted in the first place Easy 

parking, no longer a fight to drive into 

town The truth is if you want it in this life 


you have to pay for it, and over the past 40 

years us the general public have been 

hood winked into believing that all that 

glitters is better. We have been hood 

winked into the idea that borrow now, pay 

later is the better option rather than save 

and then pay, the must have generation!! 

My parents were brought up to save and 

pay for what you needed when you had the 

funds. What has happened over the past 

year with all this credit shit, could well have 

taken society back thirty years, for it’s not 

what’s happening now, but what filters 

through this time next year!! As I moaned a 

few months ago, about politicians and their 

mates in the city, out playing golf, shooting, 

dinner party’s etc... (We don’t know the half 

it, we like to think we do!) Well who is now 

bailing out who, with tax payers money 

Note that it’s not only this country that runs 

on the same mate to mate system, even 

the Russians are having to bail out their 

Banks!! Even these nice Communist Chinese 

who have been flooding the world 

markets with cheap goods, are in a state of 

flux! Sorry to sound all doom and gloom but 

at the moment very few of us on the ground 

floor have been hit yet by the shit from the 

top floor that’s on it’s way down, that will 

take time to filter through. Ah you say the 

politicians are doing all they can, with new 

measure’s to stop all this uncertainty, I say 

will it work Do I care whether it works 

With all these Bankers and City Stock Brokers 

running round pulling their hair out, or 

so it seems, is it really as bad as they are 

screaming, we haven’t seen any of the 

bastards jump yet!! No it’s us little people 

that will be expected to pay for all this, 

every time!! The good news is that with 

stocks and shares they do go up as well as 

down, but the bad news is sadly my pension 

isn’t worth a light as I write this, and 

with my luck as it is, I will be dead and 

bloody gone by the time it zooms back up 

again! At least the rains stopped and the 

suns out, there’s a good band on at my 

local, the wife’s gone shopping, looking for 

more bargains, put your money into baked 

beans I say, far safer!!
