FREE Every Month Scrumpy ‘n’ Western issue 10 vol 5NOT THE BEATLESIs a Beatles tribute band based in WestCornwall. They formed in 1998 after ‘John’(is Nigel Collins on guitar) placed an advertin the local press, and just like the originals- Paul (is Dave Harvey on bass) joined, then George (is Bill Tonkin on guitar), followedby Ringo (Pete Ledingham drums). The band play faithful reproductions of TheBeatles most famous songs, with the emphasison the early hits and rock n roll, inthis area ‘Not The Beatles’ will happilytailor what they play to fit the occasion, astheir standard set for pubs and clubs isabout 2 hours long and they play everythinglive. They will be @The Red Lion,Newquay on the 4th January, The GodolphinArms, Marazion on the 8th Februaryand on the 9th you will find them @TheRodney Inn, Helston. For more info / bookingsand all other info -www.btconnect.com/notthebeatles.E-mail -notthebeatles@btconnect.comThere is also a mention of their 2007 appearancesat International Beatle Week.** Being a short diversion on the dubiousorigins of Notthebeatles...... Translatedfrom the John Lennon (me thinks) “Onceupon a time there was a little boy calledNigel, by named christened. One day hedecided to grow a guitar and form a noise.Funnily enough, he had not a very nicenoise: even when played with the piano hecarried on his back. So-o-o-o-o, he gottogether with Dr. McPaul, who prescribedillegal drugs, and told him to grow a guitartoo, but, alas Dr. McPaul’s guitar only hadfour strings. But who shall play this wondrousbeast? Certainly not Nigel! So Dr.McPaul said, “I will”. On discovering a thirdlittle man called Alvin Sawdust runningamongst them they said, quote “You areahead of your time and at least a foot toolong” which he was. Still there is no beat, and a kindly old aged man said, quote“Thou hast no drums!” We had no drumsthey coffed. So along came Pete or is itRingo and they said “Sonny grow a set ofdrums and you will be right”. So he did anddespite his beard he was alright. But stillthey needed another guitar so they grewone and his trouble was Billy Bob Georgeand they sat on him with comfort till hecould play it. They decided to get togetherbecause they were the getting togethertype and a series of gigs came and wentand came. Many people ask what are ‘NotThe Beatles’? Uh, Not The Beatles! WhyNot The Beatles? Why Not!!MIKE LANGPhotographerwww.imagery.org.uk07889 81586001278 792784Mike.lang@btinternet.comJANUARY ‘09 7

I am a memberof a three piece tribute act, and have in thepast been in a five piece blues bands. Theproblems there are magnified many timesover. To get the act together in the firstplace it means hiring a hall or functionroom able to cope with the noise levels andbig enough to accommodate the kit. Thiscan be an expensive down time, rehearsinga set to a proficient standard to play inpublic. Not the luxury of sitting in the comfortof your own living room picking outcords. Most pubs and venues are only ableto employ single artists or duo’s under theirentertainment license, and have a maximumbudget available for artists. This fallsheavily in favour of the solo artist who candemand, and quite often get, the same feethat a five piece band can expect to divvyup! This makes a mockery of the writer ofthe article writing “What Landlord in thereright mind pays £300 - £600 for a band, maybe they should give cheaper acts achance.” I haven’t been lucky enough yetto find a landlord with £600 to pay my band, but if was in a five piece band, and washoping to make a living out of music, as thelady’s husband was, there would be a fiveway split, minus petrol, minus the tax. Iguess her husband would still be earningmore than the individual members of theband. The ‘solo’ artist usually has theJANUARY ‘09 8equivalent of a 40 piece orchestra and achoir on a backing tape, and miraculouslythis is all balanced in the wink of an eye bythe volume switch. The ‘solo’ act is readyto rumble long before the genuine bandmembers have managed to ascend twoflights of stairs with a PA system the size ofa grand piano! The lady writing about pubsdouble booking and cancelling gigs for herhusband leads me to believe he has notpaid musician union fees, to save a bit ofmoney, or he could have had their protectionover the broken contract. I cannotunderstand how the act in question has somuch trouble getting gigs. If I was a soloact I could drive ten miles in any directionand pass loads of live music venues, admittedlythey all want Karaoke machineswith a guitarist, or keyboard player crooningover it. These people moaning abouthow hard done by they have been shouldstop and think of all the short cuts theyhave taken to make a fast buck, and thinkof how the traditionalists are losing outtrying to keep music ‘LIVE’.- Name and address suppliedEditors note -“ Many thanks to both letter writers, of lastmonths and the above, both parties areknown to me, and both acts have a largefollowing in their own right, as entertainers. The Scrumpy ‘n’ Western welcome’s lettersand comments from our readers, onany subject concerning ‘LIVE MUSIC’.Just e-mail us at -Scrumpynwestern@aol.com

A very busy and popularband, always to be found in the Scrumpygig guide, and the first time I had seenthem live. They play mainly covers withtheir own slant as soon after entering theyplayed a fast ‘Mrs Robinson’, which Ithought was well delivered, as all that theyplayed was really good. During the intervalI went and spoke to bass player GerryDawson - “The band was formed in thespring of 2004 and started gigging thatsummer. We started as a 5 piece playingpop music from the 60’s and 70’s, by thebeginning of the following year the line-upbegan to change, and when in March 2005Andy joined on lead guitar/vocals from theblues band ‘The Barking Hat Stands’ Irealised that the band, as it was, was destinedto change. Later that year the femalevocalist/keyboard player and rhythm guitaristleft, so the drummer, Andy and Icarried on as a trio. Immediately, we broadenedthe repertoire to include classic rock,a little soul, rhythm ‘n’ blues plus rock ‘n’roll, as well as retaining some of the originalpop stuff. Over night the number of gigswe were playing went from 2 or 3 a monthto 2 or 3 a week. Although we have sincechanged drummers, the band has remainedthe same since September 2005until now playing between 70 - 80 gigs ayear from north of Bristol right down toRedruth in Cornwall. However, as we arealways looking to evolve musically, ‘TheGraduates’ next move is to add a femalelead singer, so we have more variety to thecurrent set and we are even consideringintroducing one or two original song’s thatwe have written over the years”. This wasa great nights entertainment, and we willbe taking another look at ‘The Graduates’later in the year, for more info go to -www.the-graduates.co.ukwww.scallys.co.uk

Theband from Weston, this was their first gigI’m told, and a good solid stage and venueto have your first go at performing to a liveaudience, they gave a good account ofthemselves, so keep practicing!!Next on a band from Exeter, South Devon, who played on the previous evening’s lineup‘The Sunshine Getaway’, a pop punkfive piece. The band have been playingwith some top names this year such asInMe, The Wonder Years, Billy No Mates, and are predicted for far bigger and betterthings. Once on stage I could see why theyhave this interest, they are really goodmusicians, and the vocalist sings with passion,a style of his own, with an energy thathighlights their smooth harmony’s andcatchy riffs, a band to look out for.Headlining tonight ‘Working Class Heroes’a female fronted band from Cardiff, SouthWales playing ‘Indie pop-rock’ who have alarge following in Wales which is moving across the UK, where they’ve supported andplayed stages with some bigger namebands. The band take to the stage, KatiePearce encourages the audience to comeforward and dance, “Lets see you dance, enjoy yourself’s, have fun” in her lovelysexy welsh tones!! The material is memorable, fast and catchy with lots of passionand energy, Katie has an awesome voice,(she’s breathtakingly sexy! - now, noweditor) The band has a 4 track e p which isnow available, tracks one and four wouldmake good chart singles with the other 2tracks backing. Well worth a listen sincethis is another excellent band. Matt Clarkeon Guitar; Tom Brown on Bass; with LukeSloan - Drums working well together, veryentertaining, a band worth checking out.Sadly I have no phone or web site detailsto be able to pass on but another goodnight, at The Rock Gardens -www.therockgardens.com

They are busyat present promoting their self release ofJANUARY ‘09 21They once shared stages with such luminarystars as Bim Sherman, Aqua Levi,Misty in Roots, The Mad Professor, BurningSpear and the late Desmond Decker. They appeared on numerous Radio andtelevision programmes, the press describedthem in glowing terms “the music isstacked with gutsy, earthy strength, emanatingfrom the girder-strong drum and basline and hammered home by relentlessreggae riffs and kaleidoscopic solo’s”.‘Heartland Reggae’ toured solidly for fiveyears until staffing problems caused “theSouth West’s first Reggae masters” to split. They played their last gig on New Yearseve 1992, that was then but now overfifteen years later, ‘Heartland Reggae’ areback with a vengeance. Responding tomounting pressure from friends, fans andthose in the know, Charlie (King Stubby)Stubbings, singer/songwriter and former‘Heartland Reggae’ frontman decided thatthe time was right for a reggae resurgence. Now for the really good news, this is nopale imitation, this is one righteous, reggae-matical, reincarnation. If you missedthem the first time round, now you can seefor yourself what all the fuss was about. Ifyou are a fan, this regrouping will be sweeterthan the homecoming of a long lostfriend. Her first major single release was‘As Tears Go By’ which was written byAndrew Loog Oldham, Mick Jagger andKeith Richard reaching the UK top ten.Between August 1964 to July 1965 Mariannehad four top ten hits, with her versionof ‘Yesterday’ in November ‘65 reachingno 36 in the UK charts, then in March ‘67‘Is That What I get For Loving You?’Reaching no 43. She returned to the singlescharts in November 1979 with ‘TheBallard of Lucy Jordan’ which reached no48.Late 1965 Faithfull left her then husbandJohn Dunbar (they married in 1964 producinga son together) to live with Mick Jaggerand told the ‘New Musical Express’ that“My first move was to get a Rolling Stoneas a boyfriend. I slept with three and decidedthe lead singer was the best bet”. Thisrelationship lasted into the early 1970’s, atwhich point her career went into declineuntil 1979 when she returned with a newalbum ‘Broken English’ (one of her mostcritical hailed albums). Over the years MarianneFaithful’s involvement in Mick Jaggerslife would be reflected in some of theRolling Stones best-Known songs of thatperiod (65 to 1970). Sadly during the seventiesMarianne lived on the streets ofLondon’s Soho for 2 years suffering heroinaddition and anorexia nervosa. It was duringthis period that friends tried to help, even paying for a period in a rehab centre.Severe laryngitis coupled with cocaineabuse during this period permanently alteredthe sound of her voice, leaving itcracked and lower in pitch. While the newsound was praised as ‘Whisky-soaked’ bysome critics, journalist John Jones of TheSunday Times wrote that she had‘permanently vulgarised her voice’. Now at61 and an important part of music historyMarianne Faithfull defies that old maximthat if you can remember the sixties youweren't really there......She has over the years produced an amazingcatalogue of albums, in addition to hermusic career, Marianne Faithfull has alsobeen active as an actress in theatre, televisionand films. FREE Every Month Scrumpy ‘n’ Western issue 10 vol 5JANUARY ‘09 25FACTS ABOUT AMPLIFIERSOr did you know? Part ThreeContinued from last months issue, which you can read, if you go to backissues page on the web site. The Archetypal ‘Guitar Stack’ with twospeaker cabinets each loaded with four 12”speakers came about partly because amplifiersin the 1960’s were growing in powerfaster than loudspeakers. While ampswere hitting the 100 watt mark, speakerswere rated at more like 30 watt. To compoundthis, the criteria speaker manufacturerswere using to rate their speakerswere a world away from the actual powerlevels created by a guitarist slamming outa chord with the amp on full tilt! So, puttingeight speakers in the cabinet was the onlysafe course. Cutting the cabinet in half tocreate two 4 x 12s was just a concessionto portabillity. Before PAs were as powerfulas they are now, a very loud back line wasthe only way guitarists could be certain ofbeing heard. Hendrix used three 100 wattstacks, while Richie Blackmore was notoriousfor using modded heads that reputedto put out 280 watt each! Many musiccritics and guitarists have said that part ofthe unique Jimi Hendrix sound came fromthe particular model of Celestion speakerfitted by Marshal to it’s guitar cabinets atthe time. Hendrix roadies have sinceclaimed that they used to replace thesewith higher powered, general-purpose 70watt Rola Celestions sold to everyone frombass players to home organists. Why?They didn’t blow up so often!Never remove the earth wire from a mainsplug to cure the hum caused by an ‘Earthloop’ when other equipment is in use. Usethe ground lift switch, if your amp has one,or talk to a professional repairer. Withmoulded plugs, removing the an earth wirefrom the mains is harder than it used to be,which is just as well: it can be fatal! In the UK, all portable mains powered appliancesused commercially are legally requiredto be tested by a qualified person.Electricians, and musical equipment shopsoften offer ‘PAT’ (Portable Appliance Testing). When the equipment passes, the testerwill put a sticker on each item, showingthe date too, plus the date for the nexttesting due. Some larger venues requirethat all equipment carries these stickers -and you may not be allowed to use youramps without them, due to insurance liabilityof the venues insurance company’sterms and condition of cover. This youshould always check, as well as your ownpublic liability insurance cover, which if youhave none then joining ‘The MusiciansUnion’ offers excellent rates of cover, formembers at very competitive prices.TO ADVERTISE INTHESCRUMPY ‘n’ WESTERNTHE PRINTEDDISTRIBUTEDISSUE COVERS -BERKSHIRE * BRISTOLCORNWALL * DEVONDORSET * HAMPSHIRESOUTHGLOUCESTERSHIRESOMERSETWILTSHIREPLUS DOWNLOADABLEON THE -www.mag4livemusic.co.ukPHONE OR E-MAIL07919 315 433Scrumpynwestern@aol.comWE LOOK AFTER OURADVERTISERS

FREE Every Month Scrumpy ‘n’ Western issue 10 vol 5WAS 2008 A SAD BAD YEAR on musician had had more cancellationsthan actual gigs worked this year and wasFOR LIVE MUSIC?most concerned at the prospect of 2009. AThe year 2008 must be the worst year everlot of the musicians we spoke to were stillfor the British pub, 100 years ago mostbusy gigging, but their overall concerntowns and city’s there was one on mostwhen playing certain venues was the dwindlingaudience numbers, at these venues, street corners. The bombing in the SecondWorld War of our city’s and towns saw offcompared to 4 - 6 years ago. We had aa certain amount, the redevelopment sawpositive reaction from south Devon musicianMartin Weller who plays with ‘Crusha change in the sixties of new estate pubs, fewer but larger, then the changing habitsUK’ and ‘The BobKatz’, two very busy andof people in the nineties, started to seepopular bands plus his own solo work, apubs close. They have over the past yearbig thank you Martin.now been closing at a horrendous rate,S n W - Have you had many gigs cancellednine times faster than 2006 and 18 timesthis year?faster than 2005! Publicans complain theyMartin - “About eight I would say, it doesn’thave been hit by the smoking ban, risingget any easier despite being in two of therent and business rates, increasing fuelbest bands around.”bills and aggressive drinks discounting byS n W - What about audience numbers?supermarkets! We are told by many landlordsand managers that many of theirMartin - “A change in patterns perhaps, with folks coming out later so the secondcustomers turn up to live music sessions, half kicks in.”having already tanked up at home, to seeS n W - Could you take the time to makethe band and buy one or two pints, then toa few comments on the situation?return home early!! Over 2000 pubs haveMartin - “I think it is the same as it ever wasclosed in England alone in 2008, this hasreally, perhaps even better in some ways, led to pubs being urged by the BBPA? Tosome of the venues have got their actsconcentrate on the ‘Five F’s’ - ‘Food, Families,Females, Forty-Somethings and Fifty-together and booking is easier and morereliable. It’s an erratic business and whatsomethings! So the question the Scrumpywe do is deliver quality wherever and when‘n’ Western asks is what affect is this havingon local live music? We are told byever we play, to maintain consistency andalways give value for money. I do this for amany active working musicians that theirliving so I am in it for the long haul. Flexibilitywith times, material to suit certain ven-bookings in 2008 are way down, somestate that they have had more cancellationsthan gigs this year!! Plus many ofues all helps. I try and work in partnershipwith regular venues making sure the showsthese acts who do Entertainment Agencyare well publicised and the info is accuratework, like Weddings and Private parties or- that’s where the S n W comes in. I thinkCorporate do’s, many have said this typethe S n W is a valued asset to musiciansof work has virtually dried up!and venues alike, so thank you”.So we went walk about, to ask some of theIf you follow the gig listings every month,West Country’s top bands and solo actsyou will see that ‘Martin’, ‘Crush UK’ andwhat they thought of the situation. One half‘The BobKatz’ are well listed, busy acts.of a Bristol based duo said that their agencywork had virtually dried up, but the factSo it’s not all doom and gloom, The PierTavern, Burnham on Sea are still holdingthat they had built up a good work record, live music events, on Thursday, Friday, they were still getting plenty of work. Of theSaturday’s with music (Jazz) from 2.00 pmmany solo musicians we asked, one fromtill 4.00 pm on Sunday afternoons. TheWeston-Super-Mare said that he had theRock Gardens in Weston-Super-Mare nowodd cancellation, where as one North Dev-open a year, have live music on averageJANUARY ‘09 26

FREE Every Month Scrumpy ‘n’ Western issue 10 vol 5most objective approach is that things for2009 are going to get worse as the fall outof jobs and lack of spending power takeshold, so really if you want to work then youwill have to negotiate what a venue canafford, otherwise you are going to spendmore time rehearsing or at home watchingTV or playing computer games!!I recently spoke to a musician who has notonly playing experience, but teaches, Studiowork and also has his foot in the corporatemarket (Company do’s) which over theChristmas and New Year are normallybusy times. This year with the recession allcompany’s are cutting back, which haseffected Entertainment Agency’s, and theyreport that work over this holiday period isvery thin on the ground. So this recessionis affecting all walks of life,so with that inmind, how will ‘Live Music’ fair in 2009?The Scrumpy ‘n’ Western like Newspapers, other magazines, Television, Radio hasbeen hit by a downturn in advertising, which we rely on to pay for our costs, andour rates are very competitive!! So as wehead towards 5 years of Scrumpy ‘n’ Westernwe look back at all the changes andfrom where we stand it’s been a bumpyroad for the live music scene with an allimportant part of British life slowly disappearing,so change’s need to be madebefore it’s too late. The House of Commonskeeps telling us that happy hours inpubs are the cause of access drinkingthrough out the country, but they have notlooked at or into the true picture of wherethe bulk of cheap booze is being bought! The supermarkets have a lot to answer for, these big company’s are sadly (since youcan now even buy Musical Instrumentsfrom some of these big stores) changingthe British landscape and sadly not for thebetter!! Action needs to be taken so -Write to your local MPNOW!! Wake the sadbastards up!!For once they are gone, do you honestlybelieve they will return? (PUBS THAT IS)Continued from page 26 - six nights aweek, bringing bands from all over thecountry, giving local live music fans thechance to catch ‘LIVE’ bands that theymight only see on TV! The Railway, Burnhamon Sea, looking at last years audiencefigures for January and February have decidedto start their live music at the end ofFebruary 2009. They have been putting ona good mix of local and out of area bands, plus a mix of top tribute acts and thisseems to be working. Scallys in CarltonStreet, Weston-Super-Mare, when theScrumpy first started five years ago, hadlive music Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and from January till March ‘09 will only doSaturday nights live, since they have founda down turn in audiences. Bearing in mindthat there is an awful lot of competition inWeston all year round, Taunton has thesame problem, a lot of pubs with live music.Out and about across the area that theScrumpy ‘n’ Western covers it is verypatchy with some areas holding there ownand others seeing a down turn in audiencenumbers and that overall people are comingout later. Where a lot of pubs havechanged hands, some new owners havetried introducing live music, like The Gun,Andover Road, Wash Common, Newbury,Berkshire who took over in April bookingsome good bands up to December ‘08, butsadly due to the lack of audience, cancelledAugust and stopped live music. Anotheris The Buckskin in Basingstoke, whohave had a refit, have an excellent venuewith stage and size for live music but startedto see a down turn last April as less andless people attended some really good livenights. Another venue in Basingstoke, TheLight Lounge (formerly Silks Bar, whichhad a rather unlucky history!) in LondonStreet, where the new owners, sold on,again a good sized bar for live music, buthaving problems to get people in regularly. Then there are the bands that are nottaking any notice of this recession business, still charging their normal rates andwondering why they are not getting thework. At this stage of this recession theJANUARY ‘09 27
