The National
Wedding
Show 2010
London Olympia 19th - 21st February
& Birmingham NEC 5th - 7th March
The UK’s largest wedding spectacular, The National Wedding
Show is gearing up for the spring show, taking place on 19th – 21st
February, London Olympia and the 5th – 7th March, Birmingham
NEC.
The National Wedding Show is the biggest and best wedding
experience with over 250 experts all in one place, offering
everything for planning a marriage. From wedding gowns to
wedding flowers, photographers to accessories, the venue to the
menu, groomswear to mother of the bride, you’ll find all this and
much, much more.
Solve the style dilemmas of the entire bridal party with a visit to the
How to Look Good Shows where stylist to the stars, Caryn Franklin
and her team of professionals work their magic live on stage
with makeovers for Brides, Mothers of the Bride and Grooms. Errol
Douglas (Lisa Shepherd in Birmingham) will be taming those tresses;
Ariane Poole will be ensuring the bridal party make-up is red carpet
perfect and Jane Galpin (of How to Look Good Naked fame)
will be providing up to the minute style advice right from the very
classic to the more contemporary styles – there will be something
for everyone.
Don’t worry though if the idea of getting up on stage is your worst
nightmare as you can have a personal consultation with the How
to Look Good Team at the How to Look Good Advice Clinic after
each show (subject to booking on the day).
Situated in southern Costa Blanca,
this three-bed villa has plenty of
room for the whole family thanks to
one double and two twin bedrooms
and two bathrooms. Situated just
20 minutes from Murcia Airport, this
brand new villa is available throughout
the year. Stephen told Aspire more: “I
bought the villa in 2004 off plan, but it
wasn’t completed until March this year
and I’ve welcomed a handful of guests
so far, so any body that’s looking for
somewhere clean, contemporary and
central couldn’t get anywhere better!”
As well as three bedrooms and two
bathrooms, this villa also boasts a fully
fitted kitchen, with fridge/freezer and
washing machine, as well as a lounge/
diner with table and chairs and comfy
sofas for relaxing after a hectic day!
Outside, there is a table and chairs
on the balcony, perfect for soaking up
some winter sunshine, while the gated
communal pool is just a three-minute
walk away. There is also parking for
up to three vehicles.
WIN
The nearest village to the villa is
Cabo-Roig, which is just a 20-minute
walk away. As one of southern
Costa Blanca’s most popular resorts,
Cabo-Roig has plenty to offer the
discerning holidaymaker; from bars,
restaurants and a busy nightlife, to
shops, a weekly market and superb
sandy ‘blue flag’ beaches. Cabo Roig’s
two main beaches (Cala Capitan
and Cala Caleta) are clean and
safe for children, while the beaches
at La Zenia, Playa Flamenca and
Campoamor are also within easy
reach.
With prices starting from £500 per
week in low season, to £700 per week
during the high season, a break to this
stunning villa won’t break the bank any
time of year.
For more information, contact Stephen
Ramm on 01268 726480 or email
Have you ever wanted to try fishing,
but never had the time, opportunity,
or knowledge Well, that’s all set
to change thanks to GDS Fishing
Tackle, based just off Hinckley Road
in Leicester, and owned by life-long
fishing enthusiast, Graham Stretton.
Established just last year, Graham
had never had the opportunity or
need to start his own fishing tackle
shop, until last February when he
became a victim of the recession,
as he explains: “I’ve been an
engineer all my working life, but
in February the firm I was working
for shut down their night shifts so I
was unfortunately made redundant.
Owning my own tackle shops has
always been a dream of mine, after
I became hooked on fishing when
I was eight-years-old; however, I’d
never had the money, or the bottle
to do it, but being made redundant
and not being able to find another
engineering job forced me to
realise my dream.”
WIN
Aspire have teamed up with Graham to offer our inexperienced but
enthusiastic readers who’d like to try fishing the chance to go fishing for the
day with Graham at a great fishing location somewhere in Leicestershire. All
your kit and bait, along with your day ticket, transport there and back, and
cost of your rod licence is all included, provided by Graham. To be in with
the chance of winning this prize, just answer this simple question:
How old was Graham when he first went fishing
For those already hooked on fishing,
GDS Fishing Tackle stocks an
amazing array of fishing gear, from
lines, floats, hooks, weights, reels,
nets and a range of reasonably
priced rods, ranging from £7.95
(for a whip) up to £99. GDS also
stocks an unrivalled range of bait
– any kind of bait you want, in any
flavour. Readily available baits
include fresh maggots, ground bait,
pellets, boilies, pop-ups, pastes and
concentrates in the most amazing
range of flavours you could ever
imagine, including pineapple and
tutti-fruity. They range in price from
£3.10 for a bag of ground bait, to
£5.50 for boilies, and £7.50 for a
concentrate.
Send your answer, name and address to GDS Fishing Competition, Aspire,
Mel B is fast becoming well-known for her enviable figure and keen interest in fitness, following
With events, activities and promotions running throughout the world, Fitness First is
masterminding the campaign to make exercise fun and enjoyable.
“International Fitness Week is about encouraging people to try different ways of exercising and
finding what works for them. Exercise shouldn’t be seen as a chore, but as something fun that
fits into your life. We’re hoping the week will give people the opportunity to discover renewed
inspiration and make a permanent lifestyle change,” said John Gamble, Fitness First UK Managing
Director. “I am absolutely thrilled to have Mel B on board for a second year enforcing her
commitment to healthy living and joining us in trying to make a difference. Her enthusiasm is
infectious so she’s the perfect role model for this.”
need to start to get fitter and healthier- weather you want to tone up, lose weight or simply
Leicester and enjoy it very much”
Festival regular, Arthur Smith.
Leicester Comedy Festival, the longest
running comedy festival in the UK, will run for
a whopping 17 days this year, from 5th - 21st
February.
Leicester Comedy Festival Director, Geoff
Rowe, said: “We’re delighted to announce
that Leicester Comedy Festival is growing.
Last year’s event was a huge success and we
want to extend the number of days to allow
for a more balanced programme. Extending
it will also allow for more daytime shows over
school holidays and make more sense in
terms of the infrastructure installed to create
venues and a festive atmosphere across the
city.”
John Lewis, who operates the most popular wedding
list service in the country, has analysed the
thousands of lists it manages every year to reveal
the most requested gifts by newlyweds for 2009.
The top ten are…
1. Anolon Knife Block
2. John Lewis Four Slot Toaster
3. Radford Steak Knives
4. White Pillowcase
5. Adelphi Jug
6. Kingsize Fitted White Sheet
7. Hiball Glasses
8. Egyptian White Hand towels
9. Salt and Pepper Set
10. Duck Feather and Down Pillow
Jo Ryde, Gift List Manager John Lewis, comments:
“While most gift lists contain the predictable
towels, china and glass, kitchenware and bed linens,
it is interesting to see how some of our customers
look for the more unconventional items to add to
their list.”
John Lewis Predicts: Brides And Grooms Will
Ask Guests For More Space In 2010
John Lewis predicts that garden rooms will become
the must have wedding gift in 2010 allowing
couples to start married life with that much needed
extra space without the need to move house.
Couples using the John Lewis gift list can now ask
guests to contribute to an outdoor room for the
garden. Individually handcrafted in Norfolk, the
garden rooms are erected for you and usually don’t
require planning permission.
There is a choice of wooden outbuildings allowing
you to choose the building that best suits your
individual requirements, whether you opt for a
home office, a music room or even a spare bedroom
for guests.
Zoe Brady, Buyer - Outdoor Living comments:
“These FSC certified garden rooms are an ideal
way to create new space - they are delivered and
erected for you and don’t generally require planning
permission.”
Testing The Best
Happy & Healthy
The love affair between humans and animals has
blossomed over thousands of years. The Ancient
Egyptians had such a deep respect for animals, of all
kinds, that they were a daily feature in the religious lives
of farmers, craftsmen, priests and rulers. The Ancient
Egyptians thought extremely highly of the great cats of
Africa, with the Pharaoh often being compared to a
‘fearless lion’. Smaller cats, such as the Cheetah, were
tamed and kept as pets, but others were hunted and killed
for their skins. Other highly respected animals include
Rams, a symbol of fertility, Dogs, used for hunting and
guard duty, and Cattle, a prized possession providing
meat, milk and leather.
Make your home a safe environment - Unfortunately,
making your home safe is often a job that is overlooked.
Pet proofing your home can lower the risk of a serious
accident occurring. A pet owner needs to be aware of
several potential dangers. Poisons in the home that can
kill or seriously injure your pet include some kinds of
house plants (dieffenbachia, philodendron, hyacinth, and
mistletoe), pesticides, and medications. Low electrical
cords are extremely hazardous when chewed. Keep
harmful objects out of your pet's reach. A little prevention
may be just enough to avoid a pet tragedy from
happening in your home.
rabbits, plus many more. Thanks to the PDSA, vaccinating
your furry friend just got easier. To help owners learn
more about vaccinating their pets, PDSA has produced
a FREE vaccination leaflet offering advice and guidance
on protecting pets from preventable illnesses. For
more information, please visit www.pdsa.org.uk. Your
veterinarian should also conduct a comprehensive exam
that includes a lab analysis, heart check, and dental
exam.
Domestic animals need our love and care. Owning one is
a big commitment that is often too much for some, which
is why Aspire would like to encourage all of our readers
to do their research first before they make such a big
commitment…
Make sure your pet receives a complete check-up - Most
people only take their pet to a veterinarian when a
health problem already exists or for routine vaccinations.
Vaccinations are used to prevent often fatal diseases,
such as parvovirus and distemper in dogs, leukaemia
in cats, myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease in
Design a diet and exercise plan to meet your pet's specific
needs - Obesity leads to serious health problems such
as heart disease. Exercise is important, but a pet will only
exercise if there is an incentive to do so. Your veterinarian
will consider what stage of life your pet is in, the amount
of activity your pet enjoys, and the time of year before
outlining a specific plan. The right kind of food and
physical activity can add to the quality of your pet's life.
As more and more becomes known about our own human make-up, so increasingly pet owners want to
know where their animals have come from. If you’re a breeder, you could benefit from the services offered
by Molecular Diagnostic Services (MDS) UK. Established in the late 1990’s in South Africa, MDS established
themselves within the UK in April 2008, with the main aim of providing a cost effective and efficient personal
service to vets, breeders and individuals.
Founded by Dr Denis York and based in Durban, the MDS laboratory
is a highly advanced molecular diagnostic laboratory with 10 years’
experience and an international reputation, thanks to bases here in the
UK alongside Europe and Australia. MDS UK provides avian sex and
virus testing, as well as bloodline testing for equine, canine and bovine.
MDS UK Director, Kathy Martin, told Aspire: “We’re extremely wellestablished
in avian testing, but the bloodline testing is a new area
for us that we’ve introduced due to demand. These tests have always
been available but as more and more people become aware of them,
so more and more people want their animals tested to prove their
bloodline, whether it’s to prove pedigree for sale, or for showing. The
system is so simple, and very competitively priced, it’s easy to see why
so many vets and breeders come back to us again and again.”
In order for animals to be tested, MDS UK provides customers with
the relevant kit (for a small charge) and the collection of a sample is
done easily and simply by the customer themselves. Each kit contains
a safelock tube containing a strip of special paper and a sterile needle
for the customer to collect a pin-prick of blood, which will be tested.
Collecting the sample may sound daunting, but it’s actually a simple,
non-invasive procedure. Results should be available for customers
within 10-days of the MDS UK depot receiving the sample.
Avian sex tests cost just £7.50 per bird, with discounts available for ten
birds or more, while avian virus tests cost £12.50, again with discounts
for volume orders. Bloodline testing is a little more complicated, ranging
from £30 to £100 depending on the type and number of animals tested.
Kathy added: “The main aim of introducing MDS to the UK was to offer
excellent customer service with a quick turnaround to the many vets
and breeders who want to reassure their customers of why they’re
buying. It’s essential that all samples are accurately processed,
especially when it comes to sexing, and we pride ourselves on our
accuracy.”
BOUNCING
bunnies
Established in January 2003, Beech
Tree Bunnies is a rabbit and guinea
pig rescue, based at Kibworth in
Leicestershire. The brain-child of Lynn
Issitt, Beech Tree Bunnies began when
Lynn’s daughter wanted another
rabbit, and the family ended up with
another five.
Lynn told Aspire: “We’ve always had
rabbits but when my daughter decided
she wanted another I thought ‘why
not’, but we ended up with five more.
Then word seemed to get out that we
had land to spare and were willing to
take in unwanted rabbits and it grew
from there. I wanted to ensure it was
all done properly so I registered as a
charity and began rescuing and rehoming
rabbits and guinea pigs from
there.”
Beech Tree Bunnies take in rabbits
and guinea pigs of all ages, sizes and
with varying problems. Lynn added:
“We have a very successful re-homing
programme. Anyone that wants a
rabbit or guinea pig comes to us,
chooses their pet, then we ask them
to fill in a form and make a donation,
usually £10 or more for a guinea
pig and £15 or more for a rabbit.
Sometimes I’ll do home checks before
the animal is officially adopted, but
I always keep in touch with families
to ensure they’re getting on ok with
their new addition. We also offer the
opportunity for sponsorship of an
animal, which is great for children with
allergies, or families who feel they can’t
fully commit to caring for a pet, after
all, it’s a big responsibility. Sponsorship
costs £3 and the sponsored animal
sends a photo certificate; or £10 a year
for a certificate, birthday and Christmas
cards and updates on the sponsored
pet.”
As well as rescuing and re-homing
rabbits and guinea pigs, Beech Tree
Bunnies also offers boarding for small
animals, such as rabbits, hamsters and
even budgies, whilst families are on
holiday. “It’s a great way to raise funds
for the rescuing and re-homing side of
the business,” Lynn explained.
Beech Tree Bunnies is totally funded
by kind donations and fund raising
activities and in 2008, these kind
donations were put towards the
rebuilding and total refitting of the
animal house, small shop and utility
area. Almost £5,000 was needed
to complete this project and
unfortunately, funds are down to nil, but
the project is almost complete - funds
are needed for the guttering, windows,
and fitting out the interior. So, if you’d
like to send a donation to help feed the
rabbits and guinea pigs at Beech Tree
Bunnies, please send a cheque, made
payable to Beech Tree Bunnies, to Lynn
Issitt, Beech Lodge, Harborough Road,
Kibworth, Leicester, LE8 0RD.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, between
11am and 3pm.
Personal Guidance From
Consider
The
Frances
Munro
Alternatives
Life is becoming more and more stressful. The hustle and bustle
of city living, our 9-5 jobs and trying to find the family/work life
balance, financial insecurity, and even divorce are all stressful
situations that 21st century women have to deal with. We all
need to find a way to relax, lower our stress levels and generally
improve our mood.
Talking to a counsellor is a traditional way of reducing your
stress levels, dealing with any issues you may have or even to
improving your mood. Despite being a social taboo that has a
certain stigma attached, seeing a counsellor is not something
you should feel ashamed of. It has been suggested that
although we’re good at seeking out and speaking openly about
physical issues, women in Britain are less likely to do the same
when it comes to mental health problems – this shouldn’t be the
case, especially in the 21st century.
Counselling is becoming more and more popular as a form of
therapy and is, for most, better than medication. However, there
are other alternatives that you could consider…
Visiting a Medium can help relieve stress, especially if the
main source of your stress is cause by unresolved issues with a
deceased loved one. A Medium will not only help you to move
on with your life, but can also give you an idea about what to
expect from your future.
Meditation helps clear your mind, making you calmer and
more focused. A simple 10-15 minute breathing meditation
can help you to overcome your stress and find some inner
peace. Meditation is also great for helping turn your mind
from negative and unhappy, into positive and happy. Once
your mind is more focused and happy, you can deal with every
stressful situation life throws at you!
According to the Hypnotherapy Association (www.
thehypnotherapyassociation.co.uk), ‘Hypnosis is a natural
state of heightened awareness’. This leaves your mind open
to ‘beneficial suggestions’ so you can make ‘positive changes
in your life’. Hypnotherapy has proven to be helpful in helping
people to remember the details of a traumatic event, such
as a robbery or car accident. It has even proved helpful in
remembering the details of past lives. Hypnotherapy can
improve your life for the better, even affecting the way you feel
about yourself and the world around you. Not only that but it
can also help you overcome your fears or rid you of bad habits,
such as smoking or over eating!
Reiki’s natural healing energy works on every level, not just the
physical, and promotes the body’s regenerative self-healing
ability. In Japanese, the word Reiki means ‘Universal Energy’.
Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this
energy, which flows through all living things. Reiki is a deep fully
relaxing and blissful treatment that not only heals but cleanses
and purifies. It also not only relieves stress but re-energises your
whole body, improving your state of mind.
Finally, Reflexology involves a method of treatment using
massage to reflex areas found in the feet and the hands. There
are reflex areas corresponding to all the parts of the body within
the feet and these areas are arranged in such a way that they
form a map of the body, with the right foot corresponding to
the right side of the body and the left foot corresponding to the
left side of the body. By having the whole body represented in
the feet, Reflexology offers a means of treating the body as a
whole.
Whichever treatment you choose, make sure you take some
time out to relax!
From work-related stress to redundancy, relationship issues
to ambitions, we all have areas in our lives where we need a
little guidance and support. Whatever challenges you face,
Frances Munro can help you to negotiate them through
spiritual guidance.
Frances first became interested in spiritual healing in the late
1990s, she explains: “Up until that point I had lived a more
material life, but I received some healing following a trauma
and it really turned me around and made me realise what was
important. After receiving my healing I really wanted to give
something back and so became a spiritual healer myself.”
From her Derbyshire home, Frances has spent many years
developing her gift and is now able to help others and provide
them with guidance. Frances says: “I have a spirit guide who
has been with me for nearly 11 years now and he provides the
information that can help them. Clients can ask for guidance
in different areas and my guide will provide them with the
answers they need, it can be day-to-day things or more
complex issues.”
There are many different issues that can affect our physical
and emotional wellbeing, and in turn affect our day-to-day
lives. Frances adds: “The mind, body and spirit all need to
be in balance and when we’re well balanced we can achieve
much more.”
Frances is able to offer individuals a highly personal spiritual
reading that is designed to empower you and improve the
aspects of your life where you need help, these can be done
either in person or through the post. Frances explains: “My
clients can come to me with any questions, these can be
about relationships, whether they should persevere or walk
away, or they can be connected to moving house or taking a
new job. My spirit guide will give them direct answers and let
them know whether now is the right time to be making this
decision, it helps people to see more clearly.”
Every reading of spiritual guidance is recorded onto a CD for
clients to take away with them and Frances also provides
written details of your own personal guides. These may come
in the form of family members or people who have been close
to us, who will work with us to develop the qualities needed
to negotiate our way through the problems and issues we
face. Frances explains: “We don’t call on our guides enough
and instead of using logic we need to work with our feelings
and learn how to balance our thinking.”
The spiritual guidance and healing doesn’t stop once the
session is over, as Frances explains: “Following the guidance,
I put people on my healing list and use healing prayers each
day to help them. This can help an individual to get rid of
the emotional rubbish in their life and move on. We have to
understand how important it is to let go because we cannot
change the past, we can only change the present and the
future. Therefore, having negative thoughts and emotions
connected to the past really doesn’t do us any good.”
Frances also runs courses and works with individuals from
all walks of life to increase their own personal awareness
and to help themselves. She has previously travelled around
the Midlands to deliver these courses and has even been as
far as Norwich, Newcastle, Somerset and Liverpool to teach
others how to change their lives. Frances adds: “It can be
really life changing if you allow it to be and you can gain a
lot of empowerment from it. If you allow yourself to see
differently, the spirit help can open up a whole new world of
opportunities for you and guide you through the challenges
you face.”
Frances is happy to travel to you to do a home reading
of spiritual guidance, but is only able to travel outside of
Derbyshire for groups of four or more people. If there are six
or more people then the host or hostess will receive their
reading for free.
Frances adds: “You can create a better life for yourself and for
others and gain a lot of fulfilment. My life has never been so
rewarding and I’ve never felt so good and that’s what I want
others to feel.”
people in the UK have an
allergy and can react badly
to eating peanuts, wheat,
gluten, shellfish, nuts and
many other foods, which can
make eating out a minefield.
The UK is home to three million vegetarians - that’s
5% of the adult population - and the numbers just
keep growing. In the last ten years alone, the number
of people choosing to cut meat from their diets has
more than doubled and there are many reasons why
choosing a vegetarian, or even a vegan diet, could suit
you. Whether it’s to avoid animal exploitation, to cut your
carbon footprint or to make your diet healthier, there’s a
lot you can gain from going veggie.
A vegetarian is someone who chooses to cut meat,
poultry, game and fish, as well as slaughter by-products
such as gelatine out of their diet, whilst vegans go a
step further, by cutting out all animal and dairy related
products, including milk, butter, eggs and honey.
It is said that opting for a vegetarian or vegan diet can
be of great benefit to your health. There is plenty of
scientific evidence to show that swapping a diet that
Food for Thought
contains largely meat and animal fat for one that consists
of whole grains, vegetables, nuts and fruit, can help to
lower blood cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure.
It can also help you to avoid obesity, which can cause
heart disease, stroke and diabetes (www.vegetariannutrition.info).
More and more people are now becoming aware of the
affect their diet has on the environment, and as a result
are changing their eating habits. According to the Vegan
Society, in the last 50 years world meat production has
quadrupled, meaning more grain is now being grown
for livestock than for people, resulting in an inefficient
use of energy and resources.
It’s not just for the health benefits that an individual
chooses to go veggie. A recent poll by the Vegetarian
Society found the main reason people choose to cut
meat from their diet is because they are opposed to
the cruelty involved and object to the way animals are
kept, treated and killed for food. Out of the 1,385 votes
cast, opposition to cruelty received 680 votes, followed
by objections for moral/spiritual reasons, health,
environment, other reasons and religion.
To find out more about the Vegetarian Society, go to
www.vegsoc.org
Although vegetarianism has become more popular than
ever, it can still be difficult to find somewhere to enjoy a
wide range of freshly prepared, healthy meat-free meals.
Whilst many eateries offer only one or two choices for
vegetarians, Tekels Park specialise in catering only for
vegetarians and vegans, so whether you’re looking for a
party venue or accommodation to suit your needs, this
guesthouse and restaurant is ideal. Head to
Despite generally being considered rare,
Coeliac disease – an autoimmune disease
– is triggered by the body’s reaction to
gluten. When gluten enters the stomach,
an immune reaction causes the body to
attack its own tissue, which then causes
damage to the gut. The knock on effect
means the body is unable to absorb the
vital vitamins, minerals and nutrients it
needs to stay healthy. Statistics compiled
by Coeliac UK show that around one
in 100 people in Britain suffer with
the disease and the number of people
diagnosed each year continues to rise.
The symptoms of Coeliac disease can
vary considerably and effect each
sufferer differently, they can also present
themselves as mild or severe. Possible
symptoms include bloating, abdominal
pain, nausea, diarrhoea, excessive wind,
heartburn, indigestion and constipation.
If the body is unable to get the nutrition
it needs then sufferers are also at risk of
developing anaemia or osteoporosis.
Coeliac disease is still largely underdiagnosed,
with the average diagnosis
taking up to 13 years, but new sufferers
are most likely to be between 40 and 60
years old.
Although many people with allergies may
avoid eating out because of the risk, the
Dietary Card can make life much easier
and allow you to enjoy dining out with
friends and family without having to worry
about your meal. This specially designed
Aspire’s Top Recommendation
card holds all of the details of your allergy
and can be passed straight to the chef
to ensure all the information is passed
on correctly. As well as being suitable for
Coeliacs, they can also be used by people
with allergies and intolerances.
For those with health problems, making
significant changes to your diet may help
to reduce your symptoms. From ADHD to
diabetes, IBS to asthma, watching what
you eat can ease symptoms and side
effects, as well as give you more energy.
The easiest way to find out how different
foods affect you is to keep a food diary,
where you can monitor what you eat.
Choosing to eat organic foods or opting
for a vegetarian diet may be of benefit to
our health and some consider these diets
to be much healthier than non-organic
foods, having less or no additives, as well
as being GM free. Organic foods are also
grown or raised in harmony with nature,
with no pesticides or artificial fertilisers,
and therefore cause less damage to our
environment.
For those who made a vow to lose
weight or eat healthier as their New Year
Resolution, the Zip ‘n Steam can make
it much easier. As a faster method of
steaming, the Zip ‘n Steam can allow
you to cook healthy meals in minutes
and make it much easier to stick to your
healthy eating plan.
Make 2010
A Healthy Year With
Zip ‘n Steam®
Perfect for cooking a wide range of fresh
Zip ‘n Steam is a fast and healthy steam
cooking system that guarantees to lock in
the taste and natural goodness of your
minutes that are nutritious and also low
in fat.
Here at Aspire, we believe that this product
will help to give you a healthy start to
2010 and have been so impressed with
the Zip ‘n Steam, we recently awarded
creators, Excelsior Technologies, with not
one, but two Certificates: a Certificate
of Recognition for Product of the Year
2010 and a Silver Annual Certificate of
Recognition.
Created in 2004, the Zip ‘n Steam has
revolutionised steam cooking within the UK
and it offers a healthier and faster way to
cook – perfect for when you have a hungry
family to feed. The Zip ‘n Steam bags,
which have been designed for microwave
use, allow the food to be cooked
thoroughly and evenly, without cold spots.
Marketing Executive, Lyn Edwards, explains:
“The Zip ‘n Steam acts as a mini pressure
cooker and has a valve which allows the
pressure to build up within the bag. This
method of cooking keeps all of the nutrients
in, instead of them being lost, making them
a healthy way to cook with no washing up.”
The bags themselves come in two different
sizes. The medium bags measure 8” by 10”,
are ideal for two to three servings and a
pack of ten are available for just £1.49.
The large bags are perfect for serving
larger families and measure 10” by 10”,
with a pack of ten available for £1.99.
Each pack also contains a recipe card,
to give you a few handy tips, as well as
instructions on how to use them. From corn
on the cob with parsley to garlic and lemon
cod, steak tacos to chocolate apples, you
can create inspiring meals to tempt even
the fussiest eaters. Value bundles, including
a mixture of medium and large bags, are
available in packs of 25 or 30.
Since the product’s launch five years ago,
the Zip ‘n Steam has become a regular
feature in many kitchens across Britain. Lyn
says: “We’ve received nothing but 100%
positive feedback, our website reviews
page is full of great comments and we
have letters coming in week after week
from customers saying how they found the
product so easy to use. Everyone who tries
them comes back for more.”
Railways date back 2000 years, when horse-drawn wagonways
appeared in Greece, Malta, and parts of the Roman Empire. The
first railways in Great Britain were built in the early 17th century,
mainly for transporting coal from the mine to the waterside,
where it could be loaded on to a boat. Iron rails began to
replace wooden rails at the start of the 18th century and British
civil engineer William Jessop designed edge rails for use on a
scheme from Loughborough in 1789.
Thomas Savery, an English military engineer and inventor,
patented the first crude steam engine in 1698. However, the most
notable contributor to the history of the steam engine is James
Watt, a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer. He made
significant improvements to the steam engine, including the 1769
unsuccessful (the engine was so heavy that the rails broke under
steam locomotive railway in Britain to be built under the terms
laid out in an Act of Parliament in 1758. Steam railways are
Attracting around 75 million tourists each year, France is an
excellent destination for a holiday. This diverse country is
17 times smaller than Brazil, which means that one-hour by
plane, or eight hours by car, are enough to cross the whole
country from one landscape to another.
From the ancient city of Paris and its suburbs, to the high
alpine territory containing Mont-Blanc (15,780 ft above
sea level) to oceanfront towns, France has something for
everyone at any time of the year; there’s always a festival
or hot event happening somewhere in France. The French
love to celebrate, and it shows in festivities like the annual
Beaujolais Nouveau release, various Carnaval celebrations,
and Christmas markets, as well as the Tour de France.
Each of the 22 regions of France has its own charm, culture,
peculiarities, gastronomy, wines, history and people…
Located on the western coast, Brittany has a warm,
temperate climate, which makes it a population destination
with tourists. The coast at Brittany is unusual, due to its
colouring. The Côte de Granit Rose (pink granite coast) is
located in the Cotes d'Armor department of Brittany, and
stretches for more than 30km, from Plestin-les-Greves to
Louannec. It’s one of the most outstanding coastlines in
Europe because the pink rock is very rare and can only be
found in Corsica, China and Brittany!
Situated just opposite the southern coast of England,
Normandy combines the pleasures of an extraordinary
coastline with a green and blossoming countryside. With
600km of coastline, marshlands, pebbled beaches, pristine
explored!
Known as the land of fine wines, Burgundy is also a
great place to pick up some delicious wine. The Romans
introduced the first vines to Burgundy and the region has
flourished ever since, thanks to the combination of ideal
climate and soil. Real wine buffs should definitely visit the
famous and exclusive wines of the Côte de Beaune and the
Côte de Nuits. However, knowledge of good wine is a not
requirement to fully enjoy this region and its beauty.
The Eiffel Tower in Paris is the most popular tourist attraction
in France and is possibly the most recognised monument
in Europe. This iron tower was built between 1887 and
1889 on the Champ de Mars, beside the River Seine.
Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, over two
hundred million people have visited it since its construction
(http://www.tour-eiffel.fr/teiffel/uk). Located at the top of
the Champs-Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe de l’Etoile is
the most illustrious symbol of French history. At the heart
of the bustling city of Paris, in a district where the worlds
of business, retail and tourism sit happily alongside one
another, the Arc de Triomphe is part of the historic urban
landscape of France and its national culture. Today, it’s a
physical link between old Paris and contemporary Paris.
Fabulous
France
If a holiday for you is all about good food, great
wine, warm weather and home-from-home
accommodation, Aspire have found just the place.
As you can see from our front cover, Les Roseaux is a
beautiful five-bed farmhouse that’s over 200-years’-
old, but what you can’t see from the front cover is
just how charming it is inside, or that it has a fenced
heated swimming pool – all the ingredients for a funfilled,
relaxing holiday for all the family.
Situated near Beaune, the capital of Burgundy wine
and home of the world-famous Hotel Dieu, Les
Roseaux is ideally situated to explore this historic area
and the wonderful wine and food that’s produced
here. Only 400 miles south of Calais and boasting
all the comforts of home, such as English sofas and
beds, and more than one corkscrew, this wonderful
property is owned by the Reed family who bought
the property as a fire-ravaged ruin in 1991.
Jane Reed explained: “Bringing up two young
children in Central London, my husband and I
decided that we wanted to give them a taste of the
country, but obviously we couldn’t afford to do so in
England, so we turned to France. We chose to search
for somewhere south of the ‘sun line’ to ensure the
weather was good enough for the children to get
outdoors – well, that’s when we fell in love with
the Côte d’Or. We looked at numerous properties
before seeing this one and even though it was in a
pretty bad state, we knew this was the one for us; it
was so pretty, even in the light of a cold winter day.
We decided that once it was done up to our high
standard, we’d rent it out to other holidaymakers,
mainly because we’d stayed in a few properties in the
area and none of them were really right, there was
something missing in each and French beds aren’t
very comfy, which is why we’ve had English beds
shipped over – it really is our second home and we
love it so much!”
Les Roseaux has a well-equipped kitchen/breakfast
room with seating for six, a downstairs double
bedroom with turning bar to assist the elderly/
disabled, if necessary, and a downstairs bathroom
with full bath and shower cabinet (with integral
seat and handrails), whilst upstairs there are two
double bedrooms, a single bedroom and a quadruple
bedroom with four single beds, as well as two
separate toilets and a full bathroom.
Front
Cover
Feature
One of the highlights of this property is the ‘Grande
Salle’, which has a large working open fireplace, an
extensive ‘Burgundy’ library, two comfortable sofas
and several occasional chairs, dining seating for up
to 14 people, colour TV, with English satellite, and
DVD player and broadband Internet. French windows
out to the terrace with furniture seating 12, which
is by the pool facing down the garden. There is a
shady courtyard at the back of the house, together
with a barn which is a basic games room and opens
onto a walled suntrap courtyard. With so much
room, it’s easy to see how Les Roseaux can easily
and comfortably sleep 11, making it great for large
families, or two smaller families who wish to holiday
together.
Within the house grounds, there’s an abundance of
room for children to play, as the house is set within
over an acre of land, with shrubs, mature trees and
various fruit trees. You can even sunbathe to your
heart’s content as the property is not overlooked;
in fact, it’s almost the last house in the village, so is
extremely peaceful and tranquil with views down
the garden to open fields and woods - the quiet and
peace is only disturbed by birdsong.
As prices to hire this wonderful house haven’t
changed in the last five years, renting Les Roseaux for
a week only costs £1800 during the peak season. For
more details on availability and tariffs, visit
www.farmhousefrance.co.uk. Linen is not included
in the weekly hire price, but can be hired for a small
charge.
Burgundy is one of the world’s best wine areas,
the food and drink here are exceptional, but that’s
not all there is to do here. Within a 30-minute drive
you’ll find an 18-hole golf course, two pony clubs, a
sports centre for tennis and archery, various cycling
routes, and opportunities for boat trips on the Saone
and Doubs rivers. Slightly further afield, within an
hour’s drive of Les Roseaux, you’ll find ‘Le Morvan’, an
enormous National Park full of mountains, forests,
lakes and rivers - great for the watersport enthusiast
and nature lover! Finally, all the major Grand
Crus vineyards of the Côte d’Or, Challonaise and
Maconnais are within an easy drive, and Paris, Lyon,
Geneva and the ski slopes are about two hours away.
The only thing the area hasn’t got is a beach!
Great
British Holidays
Many Brits enjoyed a ‘stay-cation’ here in Great
Britain during 2009 and Aspire would like to
encourage you to once again holiday here in
Great Britain in 2010.
Despite the country still being deep in recession,
it’s not impossible to afford a break away from
everyday life. You may have to swap Costa de
Sol for Cornwall or Cumbria, but at least you can
enjoy a break. You may even discover something
about this great nation of ours that you never
knew, thanks to the array of attractions just waiting
to be discovered.
The UK has some superb places to organise a
holiday, with Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty
and places of historic interest. Why not combine
your holiday with your favourite past time, such as
a pony trekking holiday in Devon, a fishing break
in Somerset, or a ghost hunting tour in Yorkshire.
If you fancy injecting some excitement into your
life, why not get a group of friends together and
book a Murder Mystery weekend.
Wales
Many holiday destinations claim to cater for
every taste, but Wales is one place that can truly
make this claim. From spectacular coastlines to
beautiful nature trails and from numerous historic
sites to the hustle and bustle of city life in Cardiff,
Wales has something for everyone. For more
information, visit www.visitwales.co.uk
Scotland
From the hustle and bustle of Glasgow and
Edinburgh to the calmness and tranquillity of the
Highlands, Scotland is full of friendly people and
inspiring scenery. An excellent part of the country
to visit is the Eastern Highlands, famous for the
historic malt whisky production. This region still
produces some of the finest whisky you’ll ever
taste (Royal Lochnagar and Glendronach) in the
six remaining distilleries. Log onto
www.visitscotland.co.uk for more info.
Saundersfoot - Pembrokeshire
England
From the unspoilt landscapes of exceptional
beauty, fertile valleys and dales of Yorkshire to
the spectacular coastlines and mild climate of
Cornwall, England has something for all ages and
interests. If you can’t afford a holiday this year,
fear not – you can still take a day trip to some of
the wonderful attractions in the surrounding areas,
including The Malvern Hills, The Cotswolds,
Sherwood Forest, and many more. Visit www.
enjoyengland.com for more information and
ideas.
Islands
Although Great Britain is an island itself, we still
have many smaller, charming islands off our
coastline just waiting to be explored. Aspire would
like to recommend a trip to the Channel Islands,
a small cluster of islands that lie in the English
Channel, just off the coast of France. These
Islands have tempos and characters’ all of their
own, but with direct flights from East Midlands
Airport to Guernsey, there’s no reason not to
discover the rich history and wildlife, stunning
scenery, cosy accommodation, genuine hospitality
and beautiful beaches.
Staying at home may make things cheaper,
but it certainly won’t cheapen the experience!
More people are turning to UK breaks, with
some families preferring to opt for a campsite in
Yorkshire, rather than the sun soaked poolsides
of Europe. Whether you sleep under canvas, or in
a mobile home, camping and caravanning sites
are great places to meet other people, and their
environmental impact is usually small enough to
suit even the most committed eco-traveller.
With so many charming B&Bs, delightful selfcatering
cottages, rural guesthouses and modern
and luxurious city-centre hotels to stay in, we
really don’t see why you’d want to go abroad! The
best places always book up months in advance,
so, if you see an accommodation you fancy in the
pages of Aspire, don’t delay; call today to ensure
your 2010 holiday is perfect!
Warwickshire
Family Fun At The Grange
Dorset
Enjoy A Traditional Holiday At
Norden Farm
Campsite
Boasting some of the most picturesque and quaint
towns and villages in England, Warwickshire is the
perfect place to enjoy a holiday in 2010. Situated
on the outskirts of Fenny Compton, The Grange is a
warm and friendly bed and breakfast that provides
the ideal base from which to explore the surrounding
countryside. With two en-suite family bedrooms, The
Grange has been welcoming guests from across the
country since 2001, when proprietor Mikkel and Julia
Squire decided it was time for thier farm to diversify.
Offering two spacious family bedrooms and a guests’
lounge for watching TV, The Grange is ideally situated
to get out and explore everything Warwickshire has
to offer, such as wonderful and tranquil countryside,
charming towns and villages, great farmers’ markets
selling everything you can imagine, and an array of
indoor attractions to entertain kids of all ages whatever
the weather!
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day; a
sentiment that’s echoed at The Grange, as guests can
have whatever they fancy to start their day, whether
that’s simple toast and jam through to a full English.
Special dietary requirement can also be met, with prior
notice.
The Grange is a family friendly B&B welcoming children
of all ages, however, they are regretfully unable to
accept pets due to the farm animals. As each room at
The Grange costs just £35 per person, per night, a long
weekend break, or a family getaway won’t break the
bank!
As well as catering for B&B guests, Mikkel and Julia also
offer DIY livery on their farm. He explains: “We have a
DIY livery yard here at the farm with 16, 12x12ft stables
and a 20x40m outdoor ménage. DIY livery is charged
from £25 per horse per week. It’s an area of the farm
and our businesses that we’d like to expand and
develop in the coming years.”
With bridleways and an abundance of stunning
scenery in the surrounding area, as well as rides on the
farm, it makes sense to enjoy a riding holiday with your
own horse at The Grange.
guests that an additional block is in the
process of being completed and will be
ready for campers visiting in summer
2010.
The site also has a laundry room, with
washing machine and tumble dryer,
washing up facilities and freezer pack
area for younger kids. The on-site shop
has all the essentials you may require
during your break, including basic foods
and gas exchange, and there is also a
small garden centre. Dogs are always
welcome at Norden Farm and to make
sure they’re clean after a day at the
beach, the pet parlour – a warm shower
for canine guests – has recently been
installed.
For those who want to take advantage
of Norden Farm’s superb location but
want the luxury of a comfy bed, Norden
House Bed and Breakfast provides the
perfect solution. This former Georgian
farmhouse has been renovated to
a high standard and boasts eight
beautifully decorated double rooms and
a delicious full English breakfast. Prices
range from £68 to £75 per room per
night.
Norden Farm’s stunning Dorset
location makes it ideal for enjoying
the great outdoors and there are
plenty of areas suitable for walking,
cycling and birdwatching. The
Farm’s own small pond is perfect
for those who want to spend a
relaxing day fishing, whilst fossil
hunters will be delighted with their finds
along the Jurassic Coast.
Norden Farm Campsite is open between
March and October, whilst Norden
House is open all year round. Prebooking
during peak season and Bank
Holidays is essential.
With unspoilt coastlines, uncrowded countryside and wild moors, a rich mining
heritage, and an amazingly mild climate, Cornwall is an ideal spot for a family
holiday at any time of the year. Situated within tranquil and stunning countryside,
Pulla Farm is a 100-acre family farm that boasts two wonderful properties (Pulla
Cottage and Anneth Lowen) that are open all year round for those of you looking
to swap the hustle and bustle of the East Midlands for the calm and relaxing
Cornish countryside.
Pulla Cottage
This two-bed, detached cottage is over 200-years-old and set within its own large
lawned garden that’s ideal for soaking up some sun or playing with the family.
Downstairs in the cottage, you’ll find a comfortable, spacious lounge/diner with
TV, DVD player and an open fire for those cooler evenings. There’s a fully equipped
and washing machine, and a downstairs bathroom with
electric shower over the bath. Upstairs the double and
twin bedrooms sleep four easily, and a cot is available if
necessary. There is private parking opposite the cottage.
Anneth Lowen
This ground floor, self-contained apartment has one
family bedroom with a double bed and a single, and can
easily accommodate another guest bed or cot if needed.
Situated on the far side of the large 17th Century
farmhouse, this spacious apartment boasts its own
garden, pergola and pond, as well as private parking
the A30 and A39, making it an easy drive to the majority of
attractions that Cornwall has to offer. There’s so much to do
Aspire Recommends
Our Top
Recommendations…
We don’t know about you, but 2010 is already going so fast - it’s nearly February
already! Aspire has already come across some great companies, some of which may be
very familiar to you, others of which will be brand new.
We’ve decided to bring you this collection of companies because we understand how
hard it can be to find well-established companies that offer this high level of service.
Today, there are thousands of companies who promise the world and, with the Internet
making it easy for less discerning companies to appear legitimate, searching for a good
company can be a minefield. This minefield has been made significantly worse thanks
to the recession - it’s hard to know who to trust with your money what with so many
businesses suffering, making job cuts and even going into administration.
Over the last year we’ve gone from being a nation of shoppers to a nation of savers,
as we avoid the High Street in favour of hanging on to our hard earned cash. This has
dealt a devastating blow to our independent, local businesses, who have been forced to
close at an alarming rate, particularly in smaller market towns. The Commission for Rural
Communities, a government watchdog, has found that Britain’s 1,600 market towns
have been the worst hit by the credit crunch, where the number of vacant shop units has
increased over the last six months by 40% - causing tremendous damage to the local
economy.
You only need to take a stroll around your town or city to see the aftermath of the worst
economic crisis for more than two decades. However, there are ways that you can help
your local, independent businesses survive. By choosing to shop or employ the services
of local companies, you can help them to flourish. You may also find that choosing local
is to your benefit, as you are treated to a more personal service that can be tailored to
suit your needs.
The companies within this feature are surviving in hard economic times, so you can be
sure any money and time you invest with them is safe and will be highly rewarded. Rest
assured, these individuals will endeavour to provide only the highest standards of service,
the very best products, and great value for money.
Photography
There are many styles of wedding photography,
but essentially it should be about capturing the
day as you want to remember it.
A good photographer will meet the bride and
groom ahead of the special day to talk about
the options available. They should also visit the
locations to look at the settings.
At Normanton Photography, we do this as a
matter of course. After the event, we go through
the images for you to select the ones you want.
Weddings are not a production line.
Mission:
A Local
Organisation,
Changing
Lives In Spain
Were you aware that ECM has Headquarters
in Northamptonshire Well, for the past 25
years (after moving from their original location
of Lancashire) they have been and it is from
here that the work of ECM now spreads to 19
European countries...Albania, Austria, Bosnia,
Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Kosova,
Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Republic of
Ireland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain,
Sweden and here in the UK.
ECM works hard to make an impact on the lives
of people they come in contact with. They do
this through various community based projects
working with drug addicts, disabled orphans,
war-traumatised families and refugees.
One of the main places that ECM is making
a difference is Spain. At the Good Samaritan
Centre, near Cordoba in Audalusia, the
Mission works alongside the Association for the
Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Drug Addicts
to support and help those whose lives have
been affected by drugs. Established in 1993,
the Association is a non-profit organisation
which provides a safe and familiar environment
for addicts to meet with a psychologist, GP,
social workers and occupational therapists in
order to facilitate their social reintegration.
There are also many volunteers working
alongside the professional staff, who are vital
to the programme and who ensure the Centre
is not only run to the highest standard, but is
also helping the most people possible. Since it
was officially opened, the Centre has helped to
rebuild the lives of more than 300 individuals,
of whom 98% are men, aged between 25 and
35. During their treatment for drug or alcohol
addictions, individuals become residents within
the Centre and whilst some stay for only a few
days, others may take up to a year to overcome
their problems.
The rehabilitation programme focuses on
four key areas: prevention, intervention,
rehabilitation and reintegration. By raising
awareness of drug and alcohol addiction and
the consequences, the Centre aims to reduce
the number of people whose lives are affected
by addiction. This is mainly done through
workshops in schools, campaigns and radio
broadcasts. By focusing on behavioural patterns
which lead to addiction, the Mission are able to
encourage new, healthier habits and raise the
residents’ awareness of responsibility towards
not only themselves, but also their families and
society as a whole.
Who are they helping Read Manuel’s story:
“I entered the world of drugs when I was 15. I
thought I could give it up whenever I wanted,
but I was wrong. I passed through very bad
moments and my refuge was drugs. I met a girl
and I married her without telling her about my
addiction. One year later she became an addict
as well and even if we thought we were happy,
the reality was that we were sinking more
and more. After five years we had a son, and
thanks to God he was born free from addiction
even though Anamari was consuming heroin
throughout her pregnancy. The situation was
getting worse and worse. Anamari entered a
rehabilitation centre and when she came back,
we divorced. I kept on taking drugs for four
more years but at last I asked for help. I went
to the same rehab centre for a short time and
then I went to the Good Samaritan centre.
I accepted the Lord after being there eight
months, then I went back to my town where
I was baptised, and Anamari and I remarried.
My wife had become a Christian at the other
centre. Another miracle God has made, is that
my mother, my brother and my sisters have
also accepted the Lord. I give thanks to the
Lord for his love and mercy towards my family
and me.”
Manuel and Anamari are now part of a church
of their town, in the province of Seville. They
have had another son and their testimony is
well-known by the people who live there. They
have helped a number of other drug addicts to
come to the Good Samaritan Centre too.
Whilst undergoing rehabilitation, the Centre
encourages residents to work within its
organic olive grove, which helps with the vital
fundraising needed to continue this work and
also teaches the residents new skills. The olives
produced from the grove are used to make
Olivalle, an Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil that
is sold in order to provide an income for the
Centre and is a healthy product of the highest
quality.
Tree sponsorship is also used to raise funds and
is something anyone can do. For just £40 per
year, you will receive three litres of Olivalle
(delivered to your door), a photograph of your
numbered tree, as well as information on the
work of the Centre and regular newsletters.
You can make a difference within the European
Christian Mission in many ways. Through
becoming a missionary or an apprentice,
joining a church team or by taking an individual
placement, you can help to spread the love of
Jesus Christ throughout Europe.
“In January 1990, my first son, Patrick, was born. At
first, it seemed he was progressing normally, but, aged
seven, he began displaying erratic behaviour. Three years
later, I gave birth to my second son, Angelo, who, at the
age of two and a half, also began displaying abnormal
behaviour. At an assessment, Angelo was diagnosed with
autism.
Meanwhile, Patrick’s strange behaviour and protests at
being taken to school intensified. He was diagnosed as
having Asperger’s syndrome but, unfortunately, it was
three years before this diagnosis was revealed to us,
meaning he had been forced to endure the trauma of
not understanding what was required of him at a school
totally ill-equipped to cater for his specific needs.
A total of 26 special schools, within an hour’s drive of
our home, turned down applications from my boys. Faced
with the difficulty of finding anywhere that would provide
educational support for my boys, and our inability to
find suitable childcare in our locality, we took drastic
measures.”
Anna discovered a derelict school in Hillingdon owned by
Hillingdon Borough Council; after numerous obstacles,
the Council agreed to lease the school and Hillingdon
Manor School opened its doors on 4th September 1999.
Since its conception, Hillingdon Manor has gone from
strength to strength, but with more than half a million
people affected by autism, it’s not surprising that the
school quickly became over-subscribed. So, five years
ago, Hillingdon Manor School expanded to open a middle
and upper school, and now provides specialist education
for 85 children. It celebrated its ten year anniversary in
November with a day of celebrations, attended by parents
past and present, pupils, the Mayor of Hillingdon, and
even School Patron, Esther Rantzan. The event was a
huge success; current pupils sang a special Hillingdon
Manor version of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Happy Birthday’,
as well as performing a short yet comical version of
Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’.
Anna said: “The whole day went really well and Esther
gave a wonderful speech. I got lots of lovely presents
from parents and lots of really wonderful notes. It was a
very emotional day that’s spurred me on to developing
Hillingdon Manor as far as possible. In fact, I hope to
find out within the coming weeks if we’ve been given
permission to develop a nearby building in order to cater
for a further 50 pupils, as the waiting list is growing so
long. I want to help as many families as I can.”
Just over a year ago, Hillingdon Manor School joined
forces with Hillcrest Care, one of the UK’s leading
independent providers of children’s homes, foster care
Anna Kennedy is a
truly inspirational
Aspire her story…
and learning disability services. Anna added: “The
partnership with Hillcrest Care has surpassed my
expectations; they’ve allowed Hillingdon Manor to
go from strength to strength and I’m looking forward
continued partnership with them for many years to
come.”
Not only has Anna established Hillingdon Manor, she’s
also set up a charity, a college, a residential home, play
schemes and support groups all for children and adults;
she’s also written a her autobiography, Not Stupid which
was a top-ten best seller.
Anna was recently nominated for the Smooth Radio
Live Life Awards. She was up against five other strong
competitors who have inspired, lived life to the full and
stood out from the crowd, but she gained the majority of
the public vote and WON!
Not only has Anna won an Olay Makeover with
Smooth Radio, she’s also won an Aspire Certificate of
Recognition for UK Autism Awareness & Support, and
it’s not hard to see why after all she’s done.
“All in all, it has been an incredible journey and it has
been far from easy. My latest project is a new online
information website for parents, carers and professionals
Make Beautiful Music With
The John Kerr Award For English Song
The John Kerr Award for English Song was established in 2006 after the death of the
remarkable tenor John Kerr two years earlier. John used to perform regularly at Finchcocks
Musical Museum in Kent, home to probably the largest playing collection of antique keyboard
instruments in the world, certainly the UK.
History
The Award was created in John’s memory after his premature death in 2004. John’s partner,
Maureen Lyle, told Aspire: “John loved to perform, especially English music, so it felt right to
create this Award in his name. The John Kerr Award Trust is a registered charity that aims
to help young singers in two ways: firstly, to assist young singers with bursaries/prizes, and
secondly to promote the English song repertoire, which we feel has been neglected.”
The John Kerr Award for English Song competition takes place every two years, with the first
competition having been held in 2006. The 2006 competition attracted entries from five countries
but was won by Klaartje van Veldhoven, a Dutch soprano, whereas the 2008 competition was
won by English soprano Laura Mitchell, who took the top prize of £2000.
2010 Competition
The 2010 competition is due to be held at Finchcocks on 3rd October 2010. Maureen added:
“Our first competition in 2006 attracted a modest number of entries, but this more than doubled
in 2008, when the final candidates were all outstandingly talented. We have the highest hopes
for the future and enquiries for this year’s competition are starting to come in.”
Anybody with a love for music, singing and the English song can enter The Award, as long
as they’re aged between 18 and 35 at the time of the final. Contestants who wish to enter the
competition must send a recording to the Award Trust; from all the entries, a committee will pick
the final eight, who will perform for 25 minutes each at the final in October 2010. Recordings
must be received by July 12th 2010. The first prize is £2000 and a recital at Finchcocks, second
prize is £1000, and there is also an accompanist’s prize of £500.
“Once we’ve picked our final eight, we will contact them and they must agree to appear in the
final. The finalists will attend a rehearsal a day or two before the final with their own accompanist
or they may use our own official accompanist. The final itself begins at 10am and all eight
finalists will perform for 25 minutes (approx. eight songs) each and the winner will be decided
by our panel of judges: Ian Partridge CBE, Julie Kennard, and Dr. Geoffery Govier. In 2008, Ian
in particular praised those contestants who performed the less well-known pieces; he enjoys
the rare pieces more than the well-known ones. The judges also place a lot of emphasis on the
performer’s relationship with the audience and their interpretation of the piece, as well as their
diction,” Maureen added.
Maureen and the Trust would like to appeal for more musical men for the 2010 competition
as she explained: “In 2008, we only had one male make it through to the final eight but we’re
hoping 2010 can be the men’s year!”
Members of the public are able to buy tickets to see the final, either from Maureen or from
Finchcocks Musical Museum. Tickets will cost no more than £20 for the whole day.
“The competition is slightly different from any other; it includes such a wide period of repertoire
– English songs from 1600 – 1900. The competition in its content reflects John’s love of English
song - of which he was a wonderful interpreter - and in its location, it reflects the way in which
his life was for many years involved with Finchcocks, for whom he gave many recitals and made
three recordings. He was also a member of the Royal Opera Chorus for 30 years. I can’t think of
any better way of honouring John’s memory than this competition,” Maureen said.
Recognition
Aspire feels The John Kerr Award for English Song not only encourages musical development
through the giving of prize money/ bursaries, but also musical enjoyment, which is why late
last year, we selected The Trust for a Certificate of Recognition for Musical Development. On
hearing the news of our Certificate, Maureen said: “Thank you Aspire. I’m absolutely thrilled to
have this prestigious Recognition. John was so passionate about the English song repertoire, so
I’m thrilled that his love of music is reaching a wide audience.”
Not only that but John Kerr Award Trust is our Charity of the Year 2010, so we’d like to
encourage you to dig deep and donate whatever you can.
Sponsor
Maureen would also like to hear from any businesses, large or small, that would like to help by
becoming a sponsor for the competition. She explained: “Like all charities, we are constantly
in need of funds to cover the expenses of holding the competition. We are particularly looking
for donors who might be prepared to sponsor one of the prizes, but we’d welcome anyone who
would like to make any kind of contribution, whether it be sponsoring our smallest prize of £500
or even sponsoring the entire competition.”
Donate
To donate any amount of money to The John Kerr Award Trust, just send a cheque (made
payable to The John Kerr Award Trust) to Maureen Lyle, The John Kerr Award Trust - Aspire
The Perfect
Holiday Destination,
Any Time Of Year
Situated on the edge of Exmoor National Park and
boasting wonderful sea views, Alta Lyn Alpacas farm
is the ideal place for a relaxing break in 2010. Alta
Lyn Barns are in a glorious position, set high up above
Lynton on an alpaca stud farm, owned and run by Anne
Coombs.
The barns have been converted to provide self-catering
apartments and studios and have been completed to
an exceptionally high standard. As well as the usual
facilities such as well-equipped kitchens, Freeview
TV and DVD player, and peace and tranquillity in
abundance, Alta Lyn Barns also boast eco-friendly
features, such as hot water and underfloor heating
from solar panels, air source heat pumps and a biomethane
boiler, so they are warm and cosy even in the
coldest weather.
Anne said: “There has been lots of building work on
the farm over the past two years. One unit is 100 per
cent wheelchair friendly as there is lots of room and
wide doorways. The new studio and workshops are
also accessible for wheelchairs, which is quite an
achievement in this part of Exmoor. The oak A-frames
in the roof and the old barn stonework, which has
been carefully restored, help to retain the character of
the buildings. We’ve been open for about a year now
and truly believe that the farm is an ideal location for
a break any time of year, not only due to the stunning
countryside, but also thanks to the mild climate Devon
usually enjoys.”
Anne has dedicated many years of her life to alpacas
and holds numerous art courses, including knitting,
crochet, dyeing, felting and weaving to name just a few,
within her recently converted farm-based studio. The
far reaching views from the farm, over Exmoor and the
Bristol Channel as far as Wales are truly inspiring.
One example of the kind of course you can enjoy
is the three-day exploration into textile design and
production course, taught by Chris Gabriel. Chris is an
experienced craftswoman who will inspire you with her
enthusiasm and guide you with expertise and good
humour. Chris is on hand for the duration of the course
to help you through the exciting process of planning
and making your finished decorative or functional
textile, such as a wall hanging or small bag.
Furthermore, Anne also has a three-day painting
course with artist, Robert Cordingley, on offer for
budding artists to enjoy. Suitable for beginners
through to experts, Robert’s course will concentrate on
capturing some of the wonderful scenery and wildlife
of Exmoor and the beauty and tranquillity which
surrounds the Alta Lyn Alpacas Farm. The alpacas have
all agreed to act as models for students!
Alpacas have a calm and gentle personality, making
them perfect for holidaymakers who are looking to
relax. Anne told Aspire: “I think alpacas are amazing!
When I feel stressed, I just head into their field, stand
in the middle of them and listen to them hum; it’s
instantly calming! All visitors are welcome to come on
a farm tour and meet all my alpacas, all of which have
individual personalities.”
If art courses aren’t for you, there are plenty of other
activities that can be enjoyed in this stunning part
of Devon. Why not sample the glorious scenery via
the many footpaths and coastal walks that can be
enjoyed from the doorstep; or why not admire the
amazing array of wildlife in the area, such as red
deer, ponies and buzzards; or for a traditional family
holiday, why not spend your time on the sandy beach
at Woolacombe or visit Lorna Doone country, taking in
a cream tea on your way.
