Epoxy adhesive
03.04
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Mapepoxy L Mapepoxy L is based
on a low viscosity epoxy resin and an
accelerated polyamine. It is supplied
preweighed in the correct mixing ratio
in working sets (comp. A – white paste,
comp. B – black liquid) which are mixed
together immediately before use.
Mapepoxy LR is a retarded variant.
Mapepoxy LS is modified to a putty
consistency.
AREA OF USE
Mapepoxy L is a rapid setting concrete
adhesive for bonding concrete to
concrete, steel to steel in force
transmission adhesive joints.
Fresh (unhardened) concrete can be
bonded (welded) to hardened concrete
to give a monolithic construction.
Used for anchoring of bolts etc.
Adhesion
Adhesion is dependent upon the nature
of the substrate, pretreatment and any
contamination present. On steel an
adhesive strenght of up to 20 MPa can
be achieved, on concrete failure will
occur within the concrete itself when
testing tensile and flexural strength.
For standardized water saturated
concrete the adhesive strength is 4 MPa.
Values which can be used as a basis for
calculations will be dependent upon the
local conditions and should be evaluated
each time.
Temperature resistance
The force transmission properties of
Mapepoxy L are reduced between
+50 – 70°C. On cooling the adhesive
will regain its original properties.
Moisture resistance
The ability to maintain adhesion to
concrete in damp environments varies
among the different epoxy systems.
Mapepoxy L is is very good in this area
(see technical specifications).
Long-term properties
Mapepoxy L does not contain any
components which could migrate out
or decompose when subject to normal
conditions. It will therefore remain
unchanged throughout the lifetime of
the construction. Longterm deformation
under loading will however occur.
This is ca. 6 times greater than for
concrete at 23°C with a load of 40 Mpa.
Raised temperatures give larger
deformations.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Mixing
The components should be between
10 – 20°C before mixing. Mix well for
3 – 4 minutes using a drill with whisk
attachment until the mixture has a
uniform grey colour. Only small portions
may be mixed by hand. If sand is to be
incorporated add this after the epoxy
has been mixed. Continue mixing until
homogenous.
Pot-life
The pot life is the time taken from
mixing until the adhesive has become
so stiff that it is difficult to apply.
The initial temperature of the mixture
is critical, and the end of the pot life
is usually marked by a rapid increase
in temperature.
(See Technical specifications)
Bonding to steel
Steel must be free of rust and other
contamination. Sand blasting is the
best method but for small scale work
grinding and degreasing can be
sufficient. Apply the adhesive using a
brush or trowel. If a thicker glue joint is
necessary, use Mapepoxy LS.
Bonding to concrete
It is crucial that the concrete surface is
sound and free of contamination.
Sand blasting is the best method
of surface preparation, but acid washing
followed by water-jetting and drying can
be used. When bonding concrete
elements it is usually necessary to use a
joint filling glue. On horizontal surfaces
Mapepoxy L with a added sand can be
used and on vertical surfaces Mapepoxy LS.
Bonding of new (fresh, unhardened)
concrete to hardened concrete or steel
Bonding with Mapepoxy L can be done
at all temperatures where it is reasonable
to pour conventional concrete or mortar,
without the addition of frost inhibiting
admixtures. However, make sure the
temperature is above 0°C on the surface
during application. Reliable results are
obtained on a dry surface, but some
moisture can be tolerated.
Consumption varies with the evenness of
the surface, temperature and method of
application, usually 0.5 – 1.5 kg/m 2 .
Application is best with a brush; a
squeegee can be used on flat surfaces
For larger surfaces and places with
reinforcement a funnel sprayer can be
used. For adhesive bonding of fresh
unhardened concrete there is a limited
amount of time, from application of
adhesive to placement of concrete, in
which to achieve maximum adhesion,
the so called open time (see technical
specification).
If the open time can not be met, the
adhesive should be broadcast with sand,
and a new layer of adhesive applied.
Use as low w/c ratio in the concrete as
possible. Cover with plastic sheeting or
use a curing membrane immediately
after placement.
Fastening of bolts
By drilling completely dry holes pure
adhesive can be used. The holes should
be as dry as possible even though
Mapepoxy L hardens under water,
the adhesion is more unreliable.
When Mapepoxy L is applied correctly
it is possible to achieve a very high early
strength. If the annulus around the bolt
is larger than 5 mm use Mapepoxy L
mortar.
Epoxy mortar
Mapepoxy L can be used as the binder in
epoxy mortar when using for low
temperature applications or in places
where high early strength is required.
Because of the large heat development
which occurs sand must be used in the
mortar and layers must not be thicker
than 2 – 4 cm, depending upon the
temperature.
Coating
Mapepoxy L can be used as a coating
on concrete or steel e.g. to ensure
adequate reinforcement coverage
where this is too low or to provide
rust protection.
Apply using a brush, trowel or funnel
sprayer. Normally at least 2 coats are
applied with sand dressing in between.
The coating can be built up to a
thickness of several millimeters.
Variants
With two comp. B variants in addition
to the standard comp. B it is possible
to select a hardener or hardener
combination and achieve varying pot life,
open time and degree of thixotropy i.e.
it is possible to obtain coatings which
can be applied to vertical surfaces in
varying thicknesses.
Mapepoxy LR is used at high working
temperatures and in places where a long
pot life is necessary.
The lowest application temperature
is +10°C.
Mapepoxy LS distinguishes itself from
Mapepoxy L in that the adhesive has a
putty consistency.
Particularly suited for bonding on vertical
surfaces, where a certain thickness of
glue joint is required.
