• Research scholars spend nine months to a year on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland conducting basic, translational, or applied biomedical research under the direct mentorship of senior NIH research scientists. Students who have completed basic sciences courses and are in good standing are eligible to apply. The fellowship may be conducted at any academic or nonprofit institution in the US, except the NIH. A student stipend, an allowance for health insurance, education related expenses, and roundtrip relocation is provided. Gaffey Medical Student Fellowship in Pathology and the University of Virginia School of Medicine o This special, one year long fellowship offered by the Department of Pathology provides medical students the opportunity to increase their knowledge of Pathology and to understand the role of diagnostic Pathology in patient care. Students will rotate through the various diagnostic Pathology clinical services and receive
training and responsibilities similar to those of a first year resident. In addition, part of the fellowship may be spent in a research project, under faculty guidance, in disease etiology or diagnosis. This is open to medical student who have successfully completed their second or third year at a US or Canadian LCME-accredited medical school. There is a stipend of $21,000/year. The NIDDK funds research related to diabetes, digestive diseases, genetic metabolic diseases and gene therapy, hematologic diseases, HIV/AIDs research, immunological diseases, kidney diseases, liver diseases, obesity, pancreas, and urological diseases. Students are offered nine to twelve months of full-time research to pursue a project beginning in July or September. Medical students must be in good standing and have completed at least one year of their medical school education and who are US citizens or permanent residents. The individualized program provides the opportunity for students to attend clinics, see patients on the wards, work with a principal investigator in the laboratory on selected clinical research projects, attend lectures on clinical research, and participate in an interactive, group learning experience with members of the class and leading NIH physicians and scientists.
