The County recycling facility, the MRF (Material Recovery Facility), processed approximately 41% of the total county waste in 2005. Of the remaining waste, 33% was sent to the County waste-to-energy plant, Wheelabrator/RESCO (Charles Point Resource Recovery Facility) with the residue ash from the process going to landfill. The remaining 26% of the total county waste was sent directly to landfill. Thirty-six (36) of 45 municipalities in Westchester County belong to the Westchester County Solid Waste District. The Westchester County Government currently offers to the municipalities that are part of the solid waste district, the ability to dispose of recyclables at the MRF. The non-recyclables go to the Wheelabrator/RESCO for conversion to energy. The six municipal jurisdictions that are not part of the district contract with licensed private hauler firms to dispose of their solid waste and recycling.
