An attractive wildflower and wetland
meadow in the historic market town
of Sleaford, Lincolnshire.
Lollycocks Field is mentioned in
the Doomsday Book of 1086 as
a pasture playing host to occasional
travelling fairs.
In 1983 North Kesteven District
Council bought Lollycocks Field to
safeguard its role as an area of high
value to wildlife. Its 5.47 acres of
pasture provide an important
habitat for many species of plants
and animals under threat from the
town and the surrounding
agricultural farmland.
A pond was added in the mid
1980s, to further enhance the site
prior to declaration as a Local
Nature Reserve in September 1993.
A small scrape can be found
adjacent to the pond. This very
shallow water area provides an
excellent and safe habitat for
pond life.
Lollycocks provides a valuable
“green space” and educational
resource for the local community
and its school children.
A rich diversity of native tree and
shrub species can be found on the
site including Willow, Aspen, Hazel
and Alder.
The pond is fringed by bullrush,
purple loosestrife and yellow flag
iris. It also attracts visitors such as
spawning frogs and toads in spring,
as well as water fowl species coot
and moorhen.
Sedge warblers, reed warblers and
the lesser-known grasshopper
warblers can all be heard during the
summer months in the reeds and
grasses surrounding the pond.
Look out for brightly coloured
dragonflies and damselflies
skimming the open water or
basking in the sunshine on reeds
and grasses.
Lollycocks Field nature reserve is
situated alongside East Road (A153)
in Sleaford.
The footpath splits the meadow in
two. The spring meadow to the
west is home to such species as
cowslip, ox-eye daisy and white
campion. The summer meadow to the
east of the path includes silverweed,
creeping buttercup and tall oat grass,
all of which flourish in the damper
ground. Both meadows are cut and
baled, and the hay is then removed to
lower the soil fertility and promote a
more diverse range of native plant
species.
A boardwalk gives access to the pond
side for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
