ECONOMICS
MAJOR
Courses in the International Economics Major are designed
to provide students with tools, techniques, and a scientific
system of analysis, which will be valuable to them in their
understanding and appraisal of current economic issues,
the pursuit of graduate work, and a future career in business,
finance, government, and international organizations.
The program examines the structure, functioning, and
interaction of economic systems. The curriculum familiarizes
students with the laws and tendencies that govern the
functioning of firms and the decision-making process of
consumers, and proceeds to emphasize issues such as growth,
employment, inflation, balance of payments, and income
distribution. Students are concomitantly exposed to important
topics in international economics, such as the causes and
consequences of international exchange, trade models, trade
barriers, monetary aspects of international trade, adjustment
policies under fixed and floating exchange rates, reform of
the international monetary system, development, and
under-development.
The Economics Department also offers a BS degree in
Applied International Finance in cooperation with the
Department of International Business Administration
(see page 42).
