Page 6 Mike Kelly, 62, is the owner of Kelly Chevrolet-Cadillac, a car dealership started in 1953 by his father, which Mike took over in 1995. He also serves as a Butler City Councilman. Kelly defeated freshman Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper (D) 55.5% to 44.5% to win back the seat prior held by Republican Phil English. Kelly is an active member of his community serving as a Board member for: the Housing Authority of Butler County; The Gathering of Butler County; Pullman Park; the Butler Quarterback Club; and the Moraine Trails Council of Boy Scouts of America. Mike and his wife Victoria live in Butler and have four children and four grandchildren. The 3rd Congressional District includes all of Erie County and parts of Armstrong, Butler, Crawford, Mercer, Venango, and Warren Counties. Pat Meehan, 55, is an attorney with the Philadelphia law firm Conrad O‘Brien, PC. Prior to going into private practice, Meehan served as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and District Attorney for Delaware County. Before his election as District Attorney, Meehan served as Senior Counsel and Executive Director to U.S. Senator Arlen Specter. He also managed several Pennsylvania campaigns, including those of U.S. Senator Rick Santorum and Philadelphia District Attorney Ronald Castille. Meehan defeated state Representative Bryan Lentz 55% to 44% in an open seat race to replace Congressman Joe Sestak (D). Third party candidate James Schneller received 1% of the vote. Sestak held the seat for two terms having first been elected in 2006 defeating Republican Curt Weldon. Pat and his wife Carolyn live in Drexel Hill and have 3 sons. The 7th Congressional District includes parts of Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery County. Mike Fitzpatrick, 47, is an attorney with the Langhorne-based law firm Begley Carlin & Mandio, LLP. In addition to practicing as an attorney, Fitzpatrick served one term in the United State House and ten years as a Bucks County Commissioner. Fitzpatrick defeated Cong. Patrick Murphy (D) 54% to 46% in the General Election to win back the seat he once held. Fitzpatrick is active in his community working with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a Board member of the Temple Lower Bucks Hospital, and participating as a member of the Conwell-Egan Catholic Board of Advisors, the Knights of Columbus, the Levittown-Bristol Kiwanis Club, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Brehon Law Society. Mike and his wife Kathleen live in Levittown with their six children. The 8th Congressional District includes all of Bucks County and parts of Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties. Tom Marino, 58, is an attorney who has been in private practice since 2009. He was in-house legal counsel to businessman Louis DeNaples from 2007 to 2009. Prior to joining the private sector, Marino served as United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and as District Attorney for Lycoming County. Marino defeated Congressman Chris Carney (D) 55% to 45%. Carney served two-terms having first won the seat from Republican Don Sherwood in 2006. Tom and his wife Edie live outside of Williamsport with their two children. The 10th Congressional District includes all of Bradford, Montour, Northumberland, Pike, Snyder, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Union, Wayne, and Wyoming Counties, and parts of Lackawanna, Luzerne, Lycoming, and Tioga Counties. Lou Barletta, 54, is the elected Mayor of Hazleton, a position he has held since 2000. As Mayor, Barletta has been nationally known for his efforts to combat illegal immigration. Prior to being elected Mayor, Barletta served on Hazleton City Council. In addition to holding elective office, Barletta and his wife Mary Grace are business owners. Barletta defeated Cong. Paul Kanjorski (D) 55% to 45%. Kanjorski has held the seat since 1985 and this was the third time Barletta challenged him. Lou and Mary Grace live in Hazleton and have four daughters and one granddaughter. There are currently 10 women in the Pennsylvania Senate and 29 women in the Pennsylvania House, meaning females make up 20% and 14% of the bodies respectively. Looking ahead to next session, there will still be 10 females in the Senate and 32 females in the House. While seven new women were elected, Representative Kathy Manderino (D-Philadelphia) and Representative Katie True (R-Lancaster) retired, Representative Karen Beyer (R-Lehigh) was defeated in the Primary Election, and Representative Barbara McIlvaine-Smith was defeated in the General Election. In Pennsylvania‘s congressional delegation, the defeat of Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper (D-3rd) leaves Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz (D-13th) the lone female representative. Entering the 2010 mid-term elections, there were 17 women in the US Senate and 73 in the US House of Representatives. Famous among them (or perhaps infamous) was Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi the first woman to ever hold the post — and third in line for the presidency. Susan J. Carroll is professor of political science and senior scholar at the Center for American Women and Politics of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University called the 2010 election a ―mixed bag for women candidates‖ in a piece she authored for CNN. ―A few high-profile women candidates got a lot of attention on the national stage, but with dramatic Democratic losses, the number of women in Congress will likely hold steady or decrease for the first time since 1987. The first female House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and three Democratic women committee chairs will lose their leadership positions in the majority, and consequently the overall political clout of women in the House will decrease,‖ writes Carroll. Assuming Lisa Murkowski is officially declared to be the winner in Alaska following her write-in election, the total number of women in the US Senate will remain at 17 in the 112th Congress. The US House is also very likely to be ―status quo‖ at 72 women members. One race remains to be decided, but at present Republican Ann Marie Buerkle leads incumbent Dan Faffei by nearly 600 votes. Even with 300 votes contested, it is likely that Buerkle will be declared the winner. 2010 marked an all-time high for Republican women elected to the US House with nine and one Republican woman, Kelly Ayotte from New Hampshire, was elected to the US Senate. The first election of a woman to Congress came in 1917 when Republican Jeanette Rankin was elected from Montana. Women in Montana had won the right to vote before the 19th Amendment acknowledged that right for all US women in 1920. Rankin served for one term and voted against the US entering World War I. She was elected to a second term in 1940 is famous as the lone dissenting vote against going to war with Japan on December 8, 1941. She did not seek re-election in 1942. There are several programs around the nation to encourage and train women interested in seeking elected office. Rutgers supports the Ready to Run Program. Chatham is associated with Run Baby Run.
