The purpose of <strong>in</strong>creased representation would be to coord<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>Ohio</strong>’s peer education<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>in</strong> order to achieve the follow<strong>in</strong>g outcomes:<br />

Increase “buy-<strong>in</strong>” for peer employment opportunities among the members.<br />

Work collaboratively for susta<strong>in</strong>ability of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g component.<br />

Monitor ethical issues and systemic barriers to success.<br />

Avoid duplication of effort among the member organizations.<br />

Foster more collaboration among the partner organizations.<br />

Increased understand<strong>in</strong>g of the unique roles of each team member.<br />

Meet the human resource needs of the provider and consumer operated service<br />

programs.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>d resources to reduce the cost of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Assist <strong>in</strong> the cont<strong>in</strong>uous quality improvement process for CPS/PRC (Certified<br />

<strong>Peer</strong> <strong>Support</strong>/<strong>Peer</strong> Recovery Coach) services.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>d candidates with an <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> peer workforce opportunities.<br />

Establish research evidence for the benefits of us<strong>in</strong>g peers <strong>in</strong> health care.<br />

The projected meet<strong>in</strong>g schedule of this group is quarterly; ongo<strong>in</strong>g committee work will<br />

be scheduled between meet<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

While the peer support model requires the use of persons with lived experience with<br />

mental illness and addiction recovery, organizations are still obligated to follow<br />

employment law and the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) <strong>in</strong><br />

their hir<strong>in</strong>g and ongo<strong>in</strong>g employment practices. Individual organizations are<br />

encouraged to consult with their legal counsel on the best way to <strong>in</strong>terview, hire and<br />

employ peers without creat<strong>in</strong>g legal liabilities for their organization. Organizations may<br />

follow the lead of community mental health providers and <strong>Ohio</strong>’s regional psychiatric<br />

hospitals. These organizations <strong>in</strong>clude an <strong>in</strong>terview question about how the applicant<br />

plans to use their “lived experience” (recovery experience) <strong>in</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g services to<br />

others. This provides an open<strong>in</strong>g to applicants to how they will use their recovery<br />
