I. CONSCIOUSNESS AND ITS FACTORS<br />

appamaññā, the illimitables: karuṇā (<strong>com</strong>passion) <strong>and</strong> muditā<br />

(sympathetic joy) 8 . These two mental factors are associated with<br />

twenty-eight types <strong>of</strong> consciousness: the twelve sublime types <strong>of</strong><br />

consciousness excluding the fifth jhāna citta, the eight types <strong>of</strong> sense<br />

sphere beautiful wholesome consciousness <strong>and</strong> the eight types <strong>of</strong><br />

sense sphere beautiful functional consciousness.<br />

The last <strong>of</strong> the twenty-five cetasika is that <strong>of</strong> paññā, wisdom 9 .<br />

This mental factor is associated with forty-seven types <strong>of</strong><br />

consciousness. Paññā, therefore, is associated with the twelve types <strong>of</strong><br />

sense sphere beautiful consciousness, associated with knowledge <strong>and</strong><br />

with all thirty-five sublime (mahaggata) <strong>and</strong> eight types <strong>of</strong> supramundane<br />

consciousness. Finally, the twenty-five kinds <strong>of</strong> beautiful<br />

mental factors are associated with the beautiful sense sphere <strong>and</strong> the<br />

sublime supra-mundane consciousnesses respectively.<br />
