BRAMWELL TOVEY MARTIN CHALIFOUR Bramwell Tovey conductor For a biography of Maestro Tovey please refer to page 9. Martin Chalifour violin Martin Chalifour has held the prestigious post of Principal Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1985. In addition to his orchestral schedule, Mr. Chalifour maintains an active career as a guest soloist and chamber musician, traveling across Canada and the U.S. as well as Europe, Australia, Mexico and the Orient. Born in Montreal, Canada, Martin Chalifour began playing violin at the age of four with the Suzuki Method. At the age of eighteen, he was awarded three distinct top national awards in a single year including the International Stepping Stone, subsequently graduating from the Montreal Conservatory with the highest honors. He then studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. His teachers have included Jascha Brodsky, David Cerone, Taras Gabora and Ivan Galamian. Chalifour teaches at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles, and is a founding member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Piano Trio. He records for Yarlung Records. His next release will feature live performances in Disney Hall – including Mozart’s Concerto No. 5 conducted by Sir Neville Marriner. Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra The Vancouver Youth Symphony has a long, proud history in Vancouver, dating back to 1930. An amateur flautist named R. Cyril Haworth was the prime mover in forming the “Vancouver Little Symphony,” first under the direction of the students themselves and later, under the baton of its first Music Director, Mr. George Coutts. Mr. Coutts was known to be “one of the very best,” “a fun kind of chap” and a Scottish-trained, all-round musician with talent and generosity as a community leader. allegro 47
