Waterloo!
Who did actually surrender A-haa…
On Sunday the 18th of June 1815 the famous Battle of Waterloo took place
near Waterloo in Belgium, in which the forces of the French empire were defeated
by the seventh Coalition. Napoleon did surrender, and it marked the
end of Napoleon‟s Hundred Days of return from exile.
On the 6th of April, 159 years later Waterloo became famous again. This
time it was the Swedish group ABBA, who won the international jury of the
Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton over with their song Waterloo. Another
historical moment!
Today, they are as popular as ever due to the Musical Mamma Mia. All over
the world young and old stormed the cinemas to watch it.... So why don‟t we
just admit that „the winner takes it all‟....
So... Friends; Mamma Mia! Here we go again!.... Help us to write history on the 31 st of July -in the Summer Night City- ...Join the Dancing
Queen and let the party go on and on and on...
MONTHLY MEETINGS
How to make yourself outstanding -
Tips and Tricks given by Darren Robinson
The last Monthly Meeting was
filled with excitement! Not only
was the topic a teaching of
how to stand out – JCI Luxembourg
also stood out by having
the pleasure of welcoming
guests and Keynote speaker in
a new location – a totally new
ambience – in the Brasserie
Abbaye owned by JCI Member
Clothilde Ludorf.
So when our special guest of
the evening Darren Robinson
came on stage everyone was
excited, but it was clear that
this great man also would
make his speech untraditional
and catching.
To start with Darren Robinson
introduced the audience to his
own career steps and experiences
in the job market. To
mention one of his international
experiences, before coming to
Luxembourg in 2004, Darren
Robinson had worked for Hudson
in Australia. Today he is
Director at Badenoch & Clark
Luxembourg.
After his short introduction,
making us see that also he had
gone through different career
levels, he briefly emphasized
the important differences
between a Head-hunter and
a Recruitment Firm.
Furthermore, he made it clear
that one should not take it
personal if the recruiter could
not help at a specific moment
– it is even for the best impossible
to help everyone, as
the profiles at the time have
to match.
Having mentioned the important
points to keep in mind,
we had the pleasure of listening
to useful tips and tricks
regarding job search.
It was clear that Darren knew
what he was talking about,
as this was done in a very
informative and clear way.
The most important thing for
a candidate in today‟s competition
is to stand out.
On the traditional topic
„Curriculum Vitae‟, Darren
pointed out, that one has to
make it interesting and catching,
focusing on achievements
relevant to the specific job
instead of former job titles.
Apart from that one should
try to avoid information that
could be discriminated, e.g.
gender, age, nationality,
photo etc.
After the short briefing on
CVs, Darren went on to the
importance of recruitment
firms and the importance of
personalising the contact,
when applying – meaning to
address people by name.
Additionally, one has to show
exclusivity – it is considerate
to use fewer recruitment companies,
but to use them intensively
and exclusively. Here a
follow up after 48 hours after
the first contact is important
in order to show deep
interest and make oneself
seen – again a way of standing
out.
Apart from using recruitment
companies and online search
engines, Darren Robinson
stressed the importance of
one owns network – this being
family and friends. In
fact, the easiest question to
ask seemed often forgotten,
but he asked people to put
the question „can you help
me, I need...‟
Also the online networks, like
LinkedIn, were mentioned as
highly important in today‟s
society. Here again, it is important
to sell oneself correctly,
consider
what kind of information
and pictures, that are
uploaded , not only by oneself,
but also by friends and
acquaintances. Moreover, the
use of the correct words is
highly relevant in order to be
found - stand out, and here
he requested people to have
a look at his profile in order
to get an idea about the
importance of keywords.
At the end of the speech, it
was shown that the speech
made by Darren Robinson
had been successful as the
audience had one question
after the other to ask. Maybe
a topic many people think
about in the time of crisis...
JCI Wine Tasting on the 25th/26th of June 2009
Daniel - Tell us more about wine…
All of you can most probably
guess, what 30 members and
friends of JCI Luxembourg
had in common on the 25 th
and 26 th of June: Verdicchio
Spumante, Riesling “Veilles
vignes”, Riesling Grand Cru
Kaefferkopf, Rubesco DOC
2006, Fixin “clos du village”
2005 together with a lot of
other empty wines bottles,
that we could not possibly
enumerate here.
Both evenings started with a
short description of Vins &
Terroir‟s origins. Daniel‟s wife
contributed with special Italian
food labeled “Le Delize
di Danièle”, in reference to
the name of her husband.
This made the session a combination
of wine tasting and
specialities like “Monte Ser-
ano” olive oil toasts, several
kind of salsa (Funghi Porcini,
Carciofi Tartufati, Salsa Tartufata,
Pommodori Secchi),
pestos (alla Genovese and
alla Siciliana), pastas
(Strangozzi and Pappardelle)
and even honey
with truffles (Mièle al Tartufo).
Finally, the lucky participants
tried the famous Limoncello -
100% natural - made of
lemons from Sorrente.
During the evenings people
enjoyed making small talk
among friends; others preferred
tasting wines and
discovering uncommon products
made in Italy.
According to the feedback,
we hope those who could
unfortunately not attend this
time will have the occasion
to meet Daniel Capocci and
his lovely wife during another
of our events, or simply
to contact them directly
(dc@vinsetterroir.com;
Surely, you can count on the
fact that new ideas of social
events matured in our heads
during this evening. Therefore,
we hope that YOU -
JCI members and friends -
will join us soon and continue
to have fun during the
upcoming events!
PAST EVENTS
European Conference 2009 in Budapest -
JCI Luxembourg was there with 12 delegates!
One thing is for sure, all participants
of the European
Conference 2009 in Budapest
had a terrific time.
Enjoy the following articles
from both JCI novices and
hard-core JCI members!
A Confession:
My first time with JCI – and
now I’m addicted!!
Writing this article, my aim is
to describe my personal
experience of my first time
with JCI, which was during
the European Conference
2009 in Budapest.
As you might have felt yourself,
when you were first
introduced to JCI, I felt weird
and I was a bit afraid of
what was going to happen.
To be honest, I was a bit
reluctant to travel to Budapest,
why my boyfriend and
I had a small discussion
about this sensitive topic. At
that point I didn‟t really
know what the JCI Philosophy
was about. Anyway,
finally I said to myself; why
not – I will come along and
discover this new world –
and hopefully I will then be
more able to understand the
passion of my partner.
When arriving in Budapest, I
was very impressed by the
enthusiasm of each delegation,
which continued
throughout the stay. Everyone
had the real JCI Spirit,
and although we didn‟t know
each other – just by wearing
the badge – we became
part of the same team, belonging
to the same association.
Furthermore, I had the opportunity
to enjoy some
great trainings – one being
completely rational, another
absolutely spiritual. I was
amazed and surprised by
the quality of the trainers
and the interesting topics.
I had already taken a few
of them in my country, Colombia,
but in Budapest I
experienced one of the richest
trainings as being the
cultural exchange and the
different thoughts about the
same topic – I can not only
say that the trainers coming
from all over the world, but
also the participants made
this experience rewarding.
Having mentioned this, I can
not avoid mentioning the
parties. They were all amazing:
everything has to be
mentioned; the logistic, the
music, the drinks and food as
well as the energy one felt
had been put into the organisation
– it was a very
nice experience. We had a
lot of fun dancing and chatting
to friends, but at the
same time we got introduced
to so many new people, so
looking back at the evenings
I can only admit, that the
parties were a great opportunity
to expand your network.
As a result of the stay in Budapest,
when we came back,
I had a confession to make:
My opinion about JCI had
changed completely!
After the experience in Budapest,
I realized, that I not
only want to become part of
this great time. I also want to
become active in order to
collaborate with the other JCI
members. As true as it is, I
realized that we must take
advantage of the fact that
we are young with a lot of
new ideas and energy to
carry them out. We have the
will, the optimism, courage
and desire to work actively in
many areas.
Having said this, I also have
to mention that I am not blind
and surely see that there are
still issues to be improved –
but that is just perfect, as we
will then have more opportunities
of development.
Last but not least, I am really
looking forward to contribute
with my own ideas, time,
efforts and work; because
this unique experience I had
in Budapest not only expanded
my network, it also
gave me a feeling of being
committed. Remember: „YES
WE CAN!!!‟ – the beginning
of my new passion.
Thank you all for being
there!
PAST EVENTS
European Conference 2009 in Budapest
A pleasant surprise!
Surprised! I was surprised by
our association. This was even
though I knew JCI well, as I
had been involved in it for
about two years. How could
this happen to me I was told
the following: „Marc, you don‟t
fully understand the organisation
until you have assisted at
a world-wide or European
conference.‟ This I was told
despite the fact, that I see
myself as a convinced European,
living in Luxembourg in
a society, which includes more
than 49 different nationalities.
Surely, I could not understand
that attending a world- wide
or European dimension of JCI
would widen my horizon.
Nevertheless, in Budapest, the
message finally became even
more clear and comprehensible
to me. Step by step I understood
and realised that the
organisation, that I thought to
know so well, was in reality
very different from the opinion
that I had formed of it
myself.
Surprised! I was surprised,
positively chocked. The people
around me impressed me. They
were capable of gathering
together almost 2500 people
in order to organise the biggest
business conference ever
taken place in Hungary. During
4 days, we attended trainings,
conferences and events of
highly professional quality.
Impressed! I was impressed.
The opening ceremony assembled
almost 40 European
splendid delegations. It was
this extraordinary evening that
confirmed that I was living
those days in a terrific ambience.
Fascinated! I was fascinated
by the choice of location for
the conference: the most beautiful
and luxurious hotel in Budapest.
The participants of the
conference were unanimous in
agreement about the quality
of the training locations, the
trainers and the speakers.
Frightened! I was frightened,
frightened of the idea of not
representing JCI Luxembourg
in a dignified way during the
evenings and events each time
organised in original and
unique places: in the citadel,
the thermal baths with exterior
swimming pools protected by
UNESCO, or again the stadium
entirely rearranged for the
Gala Evening.
Astonished! I was astonished by
our association. It is an association
that has obtained to go to
the Headquarter of the UN
General Secretary in St Louis. I
was also astonished by the
organisers and the participants
of this event, who succeeded in
moving heaven and earth by
our slogan „Be Better!‟ I am
astonished. I am astonished
and in the same time frightened
by this association.
European Conference 2009 in Budapest -
JCI Luxembourg training in Budapest
JCI conferences are not only
an occasion to visit amazing
cities, meet and share experiences
with hundreds of other
Jaycees from all over the
world but also offers the participants
the opportunity of
attending several interesting
and useful trainings in a very
short period of time.
“Personally, I registered for 3
trainings at the European
Conference in Budapest,
Trainer, Achieve and Admin,”
says Pedro Castilho, EVP Luxembourg
2009. “In the end I
just attended Trainer and
Achieve as Admin will be held
in Luxembourg in August this
year, but it has been a great
experience to attend these
trainings with fellow members
from all over the Europe.
Especially team exercises are
really funny and challenging
as everybody has to make
efforts to compromise with
different personalities but
also diverse cultures.”
The content of the mentioned
trainings is set up to fulfil
different needs. For example
Trainer gives the participants
an insight into how to prepare
trainings for an adult
audience considering the expectations
of people attending
and the standard learning
cycle. Also, it is a compulsory
part of the required courses
to become a certified local or
national trainer. Achieve helps
Jaycees to market their organisation
by setting up what
they really want to reach,
who they want to target and
why it is important to pay
attention to the perception of
the addressed individuals.
Admin is essential for all those
interested on how to manage
a JCI local organisation.
“JCI trainings have a special
atmosphere you barely can
find elsewhere,” adds Pedro,
“the aim is to get the best out
of yourself in a positive and
constructive way.
Good mood and team spirit
are keywords. - Then concentration
and participation from
the audience comes natural.”
PAST EVENTS
CYEL 2009 Ceremony at the Philharmonie -
Looking behind the scenes
As most of you have already
read in the newspapers or
seen on television the winner
of the Creative Young Entrepreneur
Luxembourg 2009
has been chosen and announced.
10 months of preparations -
one highlight - what now
Ten months of hard work, ten
months of cooperation
through common understanding
has given the results - the
project has been completeda
winner has been found.
On the 29th of June we were
able to gather 300 people
together even though it was
on a Monday evening, the
first day of the week.
Most probably you ask yourself,
how this was possible -
an especially how it was possible
to organize such an
outstanding event in these
difficult times….
First of all, it was due to our
dear candidates and dear finalists.
This is now the right
moment to thank them for
their hard work and time
spent on the preparation of
the applications and on the
presentations.
Deeply and warmly I want to
especially congratulate our
winner Sylvain Zimmer and
the two other finalists, Stéphane
Ledermann and
Jérôme Bloch, not to forget
our ‘coup de Cœur’, Anatoli
Papadopoulou. Without them
our contest and ceremony
would never have been finalized
in such a beautiful and
successful way.
We all thank you for your
participation in our contest
this year!
Furthermore, our contest
received an enormous support
from the Government of
Grand Duchy of Luxembourg,
from our sponsors,
partners and from a lot of
anonymous supporters, who
nor are to forget.
Thank you for this perfect
cooperation, big help, support
and understanding!
Nevertheless, apart from the
great external support we
received, in this article I want
to explain what went on behind
the scenes.
CYEL 2009 was organized
by the CYEL Team - in my
opinion, an amazing team.
Let me explain this unique
‘machine’, that did everything
possible in order to
accomplish the project till its
end—its goal.
Last year I was invited to the
Gala of CYEL 2008. I was
extremely impressed by the
work and efforts. This year I
had the chance and privilege
to be a team member during
the last 10 months. It has
been an amazing time of my
life - a crazy one - full of
speed and cheerful situations.
For me, as a new member of
JCI, this will surely be kept
as a memory for the rest of
my life.
As mentioned before, our
team was unique due to
amazing team members; people
coming from different
countries and cultures. People
with different backgrounds
and professions,
why it was a team with various
points of view - but this
only made us richer.
Throughout the preparations
I got a very important insight
in the JCI World. I got to
understand the passion behind
the projects—the drive
to build and create value
within a day-to-day existing
environment. This power and
will is surely a main characteristic
of a JCI member. In
addition, surely elements like
team spirit and the idea of
development through cooperation
were also understood
and applied by the CYEL
Team.
Honestly, I experienced an
unique and mutual cooperation,
working together
through both pleasurable and
critical times…. A challenge
we managed to overcome
together!
Therefore, this is less a factual
report on CYEL, but a
thank you to my team - and
to JCI in general. I am very
happy for all the perfect and
unforgettable moments that
we have spent together, and I
hope that very soon the
chance will come to work
together again.
Thank you CYEL and JCI -
my new family in Luxembourg.
COMMUNICATION
Communication
Join our journey!
With JCI Luxembourg growing
the need for an efficient
and successful communication
has increased as
well. Starting from a small
trip around the imparting of
information, it very quickly
became an exciting journey
full of challenges and adventures.
During the last two months
we have slowly but steadily
been busy building up a
new Communication team
for JCI Luxembourg. This
included identifying the
needs, finding the necessary
structure to support and
promote JCI and defining
the expected out-puts.
Consequently, the coordination
of the communication
team is intended to
cover the needs and manage
the outputs. In this context
the communication coordinator
is in charge of the
interacting of four subteams.
One team is responsible
for the web-site, another
group takes care of
the ingoing media, a third
group manages the outgoing
media, and a fourth
group ensures the editing of
what you are reading right
now - the newsletter. Every
part is im-portant, and
needs assist-ance…
SPONSORS & WHO WE ARE
Sponsors
It‟s about solid partnerships
It is definitely worth it to
have solid partners. That’s
the way JCI Luxembourg
keeps its projects reaching
their full potential.
Partnering with corporate
sponsors magnifies the impact
of JCI projects as JCI
create positive changes in
Luxembourg. "Sponsorship is
the key to moving forward,”
says Sponsorship Consultant
Jill Larson. “JCI can offer an
amazing amount of value to
partners. Companies want
to support noble causes.
And we can help to get
them there.”
But, what is in it for the
partners
We aim at partnerships
more than at sponsorships.
The most important is what
kind of value our organiza-
tion offers to the potential
partner as a network of
young active citizens. The
main question is: “how will
the partner benefit from
their partnership with us”
Therefore, we try to combine
the value of JCI with
the need of a company in
order to create a partnership
that is of mutual benefit.
Some partners put their
premises at our disposal at
meetings or events, others
provide drinks, others host
our websites…
Companies, that choose to
become a partner of JCI,
knows that they gain publicity
and recognition in the
community, as we include
their name and logo in marketing
materials and thank
them publicly.
JCEL
Who we are
Maintaining partnerships
Our aim is to sustain an ongoing
dialogue with our
partners and make sure they
know their support is
Valuable to us. Therefore we
keep partners informed
of our project results and
show how their contributions
made the project possible.
Their help really makes the
difference.
MBW a new Partner.
We hereby want to thank
Mr. Boris Markschläger, from
MBW, Techniques du bâtiment,
for his support and
sponsorship, which allows JCI
Luxembourg to provide a
to its members, friends
