The Horizons Program at Colorado Academy Announces new Executive Director
(DENVER) –Colorado Academy Head of School Mike Davis and Horizons Board Chair Peggy Graham
Phillips announced today that Ingrid Hillhouse Moore will take over as new Executive Director of
the Horizons Program at Colorado Academy beginning September 1, 2011. Moore takes over for
Jenny Leger, who is retiring from the Executive Director position after 13 years.
Horizons at Colorado Academy is a long-‐term enrichment program for approximately 120 low-income
Denver Public School (DPS) students. Horizons students return each summer from
Kindergarten through eighth grade and also participate in a year-‐round program that keeps them
engaged throughout the school year. As in the other 18 Horizons programs nationwide, emphasis is
on strong academics, focusing on literacy and “STEM” courses (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics).
Moore comes to the position after having served as CA’s Director of Lower School Admission and
Financial Aid since 2002. “I am thrilled and honored to have been chosen as the new Executive
Director of Horizons at CA,” says Moore. “Having worked with Jenny Leger for the past nine years, I
know that I am following in the footsteps of a tremendous educator with a huge heart. I am excited
to bring my own brand of compassion and enthusiasm to the program, and I look forward to
helping Horizons grow even stronger with life-‐changing opportunities for its students,” she says.
Horizons also includes social and cultural learning, sports activities, art instruction, and daily
swimming lessons. Horizons takes place on Colorado Academy’s campus and is designed to
encourage students from low-‐income populations to reach their full potential.
The Horizons Program at CA and Horizons National were honored by the National Summer
Learning Association with the Excellence in Summer Learning Award as one of America’s best
summer learning programs. Horizons has been operating on the CA campus since 1998, and was
brought to Colorado with the help of long-‐time CA educator Sean Smith, who passed away in late
2010.
Horizons Program 2-‐2-‐2
At CA, 98% of Horizons students return from one summer to the next; On average, Horizons
students not only avoid “summer slide” but improve three months in reading skills each summer,
and Horizons students are far more likely to graduate from high school and attend college than they
would be without the strong foundational support of Horizons.
CA’s Head of School Mike Davis says, “In Ingrid Moore, we have a strong advocate for children,
someone with experience as an educator, and most importantly, one with a passion for helping
young people excel. I look forward to working with her as we continue what I consider to be a very
special part of Colorado Academy.”
Davis continues, “The school and families of Horizons owe a debt of gratitude to Jenny Leger for her
work with Horizons. Her devotion to this program and to the Horizons students has been
unwavering; whether taking students skiing on weekends, reading books to them over the summer
or delivering grant proposals in the dark of night, she has been dogged in her fight for Horizons, and
Jenny, we thank you.”
Colorado Academy is a pre-‐K through 12 co-‐ed, independent day school in southwest Denver
serving 900 students from across the metro area.
