Sample Cover Letter
June 1, 2009
Ms. Jane Red
Head Volleyball Coach
Department of Athletics
Main Street University
Everytown, CO 95874
Dear Ms. Red,
I am interested in applying to Main Street University and would like information regarding the
school and your volleyball program. I appreciated receiving your letter during volleyball
season last fall.
I am currently a junior at Example High School, a competitive, college preparatory day
school located 5 miles south of Anytown. I carry an overall weighted grade point average of
3.45 on a 4.0 scale; and though our school does not rank, I am confident that I am in the top
25% of the class. I have a strong interest in the humanities, specifically communications. I
am a serious student and athlete and feel I have a lot to offer your volleyball program.
In regards to volleyball, please note that I have participated in the sport since 1992. My
coach, John Smith, has encouraged me to contact you directly and indicates he would be
happy to talk with you about my skills and abilities. I am a left-handed player and have
played several positions including setter and middle blocker. I am currently playing outside
swing hitter/setter with the Hamilton Volleyball Club in Anytown, CO.
Enclosed, please find a copy of my academic and athletic resume, volleyball schedule, and
contact information for my coach and for me. I have also included a few articles to further
demonstrate my abilities.
I would appreciate receiving any information specifically detailing your academic program as
well as any scholarship information you may have regarding volleyball.
Sincerely,
Susie Q. Example
