September 23, <strong>1988</strong>----Bucharest, Romania: At<br />

6:19 p.m., an individual threw an incendiary device<br />

onto the grounds <strong>of</strong> the U.S. Consulate. The device<br />

caused no property damage or injuries.<br />

October 30, <strong>1988</strong>---Izmir, Turkey: At 9:30 p.m.,<br />

an explosion damaged a car belonging to an<br />

American citizen who teaches at the U.S. Defense<br />

Department school for dependents in Izmir. There<br />

were no injuries in the incident. No one claimed<br />

credit for the attack.<br />

December 21, <strong>1988</strong>--Lockerbie, Scotland: A Pan<br />

Am 747 (flight 103) exploded over Scotland killing<br />

all 259 passengers aboard (189 were <strong>Americans</strong>), as<br />

well as 11 residents <strong>of</strong> Lockerbie. Though all<br />

evidence to date suggests that this was a terrorist<br />

act, criminal sabotage has not been ruled out. The<br />

investigation is continuing, and no definitive<br />

conclusions have been reached.<br />
