1. Atlas shootout leads to arrest of thugs
Two men were arrested after a shoot out with an Atlas response officer at about 1am yesterday
morning in Reginald road, Mount Pleasant.
Operational head, Monty Montgomery, said that his officer was driving down the road on a routine
patrol when he saw the vehicle parked on the side of the road. "He cautiously approached the vehicle

and it slowly moved off," he said. "The officer then saw the 2 occupants in the car looking very evasive
and slouching while sitting in the vehicle."
The officer radioed for backup however the vehicle he was following sped off down the road into a
dead end. "The two guys then jumped out the car and started shooting," Montgomery said. "Our
officer took cover and returned fire on the two suspects however by that time they had gone into the
bush."
No one was injured in the shoot out. Police confirmed that the vehicle had not yet been reported
stolen. The dog unit went through the bush however the suspects had already fled.
A short while later two 'suspicious' men were seen outside the Mount Pleasant filling station. "The
police arrived and searched the two men and found the abandoned getaway cars ignition key in the
ones pants pocket,"
Both were arrested and no firearm was found. Montgomery said that it was likely the men threw it in
the bush while running away.
At day break a team of Atlas members scoured the bush where the vehicle was found in an attempt to
find the firearm. "They must have lost or thrown the gun into the bush,"Montgomery said. "We have
not found it yet but will carry on searching."
Mount Pleasant Crime Prevention Forum (CPF) head Donald Gray said the he commended the work
done by the team who brought the criminals to book. "Many thanks to SAPS Walmer, Dog unit, Atlas
Security and CPF members who assisted in getting these thugs behind bars.
2. Stolen car recovered and suspects arrested
Atlas Clarendon Park Dedicated Patrol Service (DPS) recovered an
abandoned Toyota hi-ace mini bus and arrested four men when they
returned to tow the vehicle.
The Dedicated Patrol Service (DPS), which has only been operating in
the Clarendon area since Monday, recovered the abandoned stolen
vehicle in Reserve Avenue, near the bottom of Target Kloof near the
bridge.
The car was discovered by the DPS officer who was on routine patrols
in the area. Atlas inspected the vehicle and found it to be unlocked and
parked under a tree next to the bush in Settlers Valley near the bridge at the bottom of Target Kloof.
Police were notified and tested the registration of the Hi-Ace which showed the car as stolen.
While police and Atlas were on the scene, two cars traveling in convoy came slowly down Target Kloof
and promptly spun off when they saw Atlas and the police.
"The police were standing with us and started following the vehicles," said operations manager Monty
Montgomery.
"When they saw the police car behind them they tried to do a U-turn however Atlas and had blocked
the road boxing them in."

Police questioned the men who claimed that the vehicle was theirs and that they had now come to tow
it as it had broken down. The four men were arrested and their 2 getaway vehicles confiscated.
Detectives are trying to link them to other motor vehicle thefts in the area.
Note from Atlas:
This shows that the DPS works. These people were on route to do something however were caught
before the time. Criminals often stash stolen getaway cars nearby where they intend to rob. Well done
to the Humewood House robbery task team and Atlas for a job well done!
3. Police nab suspected house robbery gang
POLICE detectives arrested a team of four men over the weekend
suspected to be behind a spate of house robberies in both the
Summerstrand and Walmer area.
Undercover police detectives raided two Walmer township taverns over
the weekend after they received information that the wanted men
were behind a string house robberies throughout Port Elizabeth.
Approximately 20 undercover policemen mingled in the Walmer
location tavern while surveying the four armed suspects who
suspected to be drinking in the tavern.
As troops stormed the tavern the one suspect threw his firearm into a lady friend's handbag before
raising his hands in the air.
Police arrested the man and his lady friend as well as added an additional charge of possession of an
illegal firearm to his list of charges.
One of the four suspects has been wanted by police since 2006 for armed robbery and a string of
other charges.
In this time period this robber and his gang have committed an array of crimes which have now come
to an end.
In 2006 the robber was given bail and did not stand trial or appear in court. He has been wanted by
police ever since.
Police are trying to link the group to a spate of house robberies in the Summerstrand and Walmer
areas.
Numerous Summerstrand house robberies are believed to done by robbers living in Walmer township.
Foot prints have been tracked by police through the back of the Summerstrand bush to Walmer
township.
Police Captain Garth Rademeyer said that so far the Humewood detectives have linked the 4 men to a
house robbery in Summerstrand last week. "We are now in the process of linking the four suspects to
more than 14 house robberies we believe they were involved with," he said.
The suspects are known to walk the bushy area from the back of Summerstrand to the airport.

4. Rouge bullet misses Linkside woman while sleeping
A LINKSIDE woman narrowly escaped death after a bullet exploded through her bed room window
while she was sleeping during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Atlas operations manager Monty Montgomery who assessed the scene said that the lady was lucky to
be alive. "It looks like a stray bullet broke the glass and skimmed over her while she was sleeping," he
said. "She is really very lucky that the bullet did not hit her."
Montgomery said that at this stage it is not known from where the bullet came from.
"We found the head of the bullet and it looks like a pistols," he said. "If that bullet hit her it would be
one of the most bizarre incidents I have ever seen."
Police were called to the scene and are investigating the matter.
It is thought that the bullet came from the nearby field.
Montgomery said that under the circumstances he did not think it was a robbery as no signs of forced
entry were seen.
5. Brazen S/End burglars return to house
A SOUTH End townhouse homeowner recently installed an Atlas alarm after receiving prompt and
efficient service following his house being ransacked.
The owner of the townhouse returned home in the evening and found his place burgled prompting him
to call Atlas and the police. At the time the residence was not an Atlas client.
Response officer Nicki Putter arrived on the scene and searched the nearby bush. The police dog unit
was also called to the scene and searched the bush however the suspects had already fled. "The man
does not have an alarm so I gave him my cellphone number to call me should the thieves come back,"
said Putter. "I withdrew and started my patrols when the man called about an hour later saying the
guys had come back and that he could hear them in the house."
At the time Putter was attending to another priority complaint and sent a colleague to the scene.
"When we arrived first and found the man's bags packed and next to the door," said Putter. "We got to
the house just before they tried to take the bags and goods."
After an extensive search no one was found. A case of house breaking is being investigated.
6. Police and Atlas net wanted suspects
POLICE and Atlas response officers arrested 3 robbers last week after they stole car tyres from a
vehicle that was parked outsidethe Koensprag Complex in South End.

A passing resident noticed the thieves stealing the tyres and phoned the police and Atlas.
Atlas arrived on the scene first and saw the men spin off in a Dark blue Toyota Corolla, CCH 587EC -
which was reported in last weeks edition of the newsletter for scoping out houses in the Mount Croix
area.
After a high speed chase through 6 th Avenue Walmer into Target Kloof, both police and Atlas managed
to cordon off the area and catch the thieves.
All three men were arrested on the scene and the stolen tyres recovered.
Police Captain Garth Rademeyer phoned Atlas management the next morning to thank them for their
assistance and great team work which led to the arrest of the three men. "This team effort really
shows what out joint operations are capable of," he said. "The three men have already been linked to
3 other crimes in the Humewood Policing area."
All three are from different suburbs around Port Elizabeth. "One is from Schaudeville, the other
Richmond Hill and the last one from Central," said Rademeyer. "So far these three have been linked to
2 other incidents where cars tyres were stolen and left on bricks and another incident of robbery in
Summerstrand's Percy Owen Street."
These men are also believed to have been behind a spate of robberies, thefts and other criminal
activities in the Walmer police station area.
The car was impounded, tyres confiscated and suspects arrested.
Note from Atlas:
Welldone to all involved. A perfect exampleof the team work needed to stamp out crime! Now it is up
to the courts and police to keep these culprits behind bars.
7. Warning: Watch your bags and belongings while
eating out.
Richard tells of how his wife was mugged at dinner: "I thought your
readers could benefit from hearing about an incident that happened to
my wife and I in a Lorraine restaurant last night, hopefully so that they
can prevent it happening to them.
We were having dinner at one of the restaurants in the complex early in
the evening with a friend, and were the only table there. A group of two
very well dressed black men and their rotund girlfriends, all in their 20's
walked in and were milling around talking to waiters and the manager
about the menu. At one point the stood directly next to our table and
were talking loudly to the restaurant staff about obscure issues, then walked out the restaurant
without ordering anything.
A few minutes later my wife checked her handbag which had been lying on the floor at her feet, and
saw that her purse was gone. Obviously all the bumbling around and rude behaviour in the restaurant
was a distraction for one of them to bend down when we weren't looking and swipe the purse. The
incident was reported to centre security who looked around, however could find no trace of the
perpetrators. They later informed us that a group meeting the same description had earlier attempted

to steal the personal belongings of an elderly couple elsewhere in the centre. The incident was
reported to Walmer Police station to obtain the necessary affidavit for a replacement driver's licence.
Moral of the story is that ladies should keep their bags closed and in plain sight at all times. If people
are acting in a strange manner, rather be rude to them and tell them to leave than be polite and
become a victim.
8. House Robbery in Summerstrand
A Whitby street, Summerstrand, domestic worker was held at gun point and tied up at 11am on
Monday only moments after the homeowner left the house.
The domestic worker opened the back door when she heard the two dogs (terriers) barking in the back
garden.
Two men then grabbed the domestic, pushed her into the house, held a pistol to her head and bound
her hands together with cable ties. The men then took her to the bathroom where she was left while
they ransacked the house clearly looking for a safe.
At approximately 4pm the terrified domestic managed to break free and climb through a bathroom
window.
The robbers managed to steal laptops and jewelry however it is believed that they were also searching
for firearms.
Note from Atlas:
The men who were arrested by the detectives on Saturday, as mentioned in story 3, have been linked
to this house robbery already.
9. Muggers rob boy at bus stop
Concerned parent writes: "At 7:40 am on Thursday, 21 May,
my son was waiting for a bus outside Lisa Villas townhouses at the
corner of Buffelsfontein and Walter Roads when he was mugged
and his watchripped off his wrist.
The man stole his stuff and then bolted across Buffelsfontein Road,
jumped the fence around the field on the opposite corner, and fled
in the general direction of Pari Park.Fortunately he was not
seriously hurt.
I would like to warn everyone else who might also use that bus stop as well as extend my appreciation
to Atlas for sending a patrol car to Walter Road the following morning to keep an eye on things."
10. Man beaten and robbed for cash on beachfront

A YOUNG man was beaten and robbed on the beachfront by 4 men who demanded money while he
was at the public telephones near Windermere Road, Humewood, at around 9pm on Saturday evening.
The four young street beggars approached the man and asked him for money.
He gave them coins amounting to less than R10 and the men demanded more money.
The man refused prompting the four men to surround and push him to the ground. The men then
kicked and beat him before stealing his wallet and running off in the direction of the harbour.
Police were notified and a case of assault and robbery is being investigated.
11. Watch out for the broken down car ploy!
Ben Kamma Neighbourhood Watch warns: "Last week two
men walking in Wiehahn Avenue, Ben Kamma, were spotted and
questioned by neighbourhood watch patrollers. The men claim to
have been on route to the nearby petrol station to get fuel for
their vehicle. Despite this, neighbourhood watchers noticed that
the men were walking in the opposite direction of any petrol
station and rather further into the suburb.
A white Uno, registration CYZ 285 EC, stopped in Wiehahn
Avenue, Ben Kamma, was noticed by the patrollers hiding in the
darkness.
A man was found to be lying down on the back seat of the car. He said that he couldn't get the vehicle
started, and claimed that he did not know the 2 men walking away who claimed to have come from his
vehicle.
The vehicle's registration was tested by police and was found not to be stolen.
The 2 men were followed from a distance and seen leaving the suburb.
Miraculously shortly afterwards the vehicle repaired itself and left the suburb as soon as the patrollers
had driven away.
The tyre tracks from the Uno could be seen in the dew showing that the vehicle did a U-turn to avoid
the neighbourhood watch patrollers.
The Uno turned into Walker Drive and headed in the direction of the shopping centre.
One of the neighbourhood patrollers caught up with the pedestrians and Uno in Walker Drive. Once
again the vehicle had stopped with the bonnet open at the bus stop opposite the Shopping Centre.
A fellow patroller watched the Uno from behind the shopping centre palisade fence. When the 2
pedestrians reached the vehicle they got in, closed the bonnet and drove off.
The observer watching the car tailed it into Vikingvale and not to the garage as expected of a vehicle

suffering from mechanical difficulties or in need of petrol.
This suspicious vehicle was reported to the police as well as other neighbourhood watch groups. Please
be alert to vehicles stopped in the area; 'breakdowns' are commonly used as an excuse for stopping so
as to avoid suspicion.
These guys obviously didn't get their story straight upfront - the driver claimed he didn't know the
pedestrians and the pedestrians claimed they were getting petrol for the vehicle."
Note from Atlas:
A similar Uno was spotted driving slowly in the Walmer area on Friday night. When the Atlas patrol
vehicle approached the Uno it sped off towards Summerstrand. Anyone who spots the car must notify
police of the suspicious car. The suspicious behaviour of the occupants in this vehicle warrants the
police to look into their activities.
12. Why is the beachfront so dark at night?
The latest Summerstrand Residents Association meeting held at Pearson High School on Tuesday had
concerned residents up in arms querying why sections of the beachfront is in darkness at night.
Councillor Dean Biddulph addressed the meeting and said that the electricity cabling from McArthur
Baths to Happy Valley had been stolen.
He said that due to portions of the cabling running under ground the metro had to find money in their
budget to uplift part of the walk way and replace the cable.
Residents raised concerns in the meeting that the prime beachfront stretch was now ultimately a
danger to both tourists and residents at night as fears of being robbed in the dark were more likely.
13. Bogus contractor operating in PE area.
Andrew warns: "I would like to share numerous problems I had with a local décor company, who I
contracted to paint my home. While this 'contractor' was at my house the following occurred:
One of the contractor's workers stole a laptop from my study. The man was caught and a criminal
charge was laid at the Walmer Police station - the laptop has still not being recovered.
The Contractor himself, with the help of his plumber colleague, undertook to replace my faulty
geyser and decided that he would sell the new geyser he bought for this purpose. He connected all hot
water to a second geyser that was discovered in the roof on investigation. The contractor was paid R
4000.00 for this. I only discovered this later. One of his workers also came forward and informed me
that the undercoat specified in the contract was not used and that an alternative cheaper product was
used instead. This cost me another R19000.00 just for the paint work. Criminal charges have been laid
against the contractor at Walmer Police station for theft.
The details of the contractor are attached on one of his "letterheads". Should this individual not go to
jail soon he may be approaching some of Atlas's clients to do work for them and I would warn them
against using him as he has shown his true colours. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any
further information on 082578 5987."

Note from Atlas:
I recommend anyone wanting to have work done on their premises to contact Andrew just to confirm
whether it is the same contractor of not.
14. Business cash reversal scam that could happen to
you:
A clever cash reversal scam has been reported in various towns throughout the country and could
happen to you next. Banks have warned businesses of the latest scam which affects suppliers who
release goods on confirmation of deposits.
The fraudster will order goods from a retailer for a substantial amount of money and deposit the
money into the suppliers' bank account - a true and genuine transaction. Proof of deposit is then
produced to the supplier and the order delivered. Up to this stage the transaction is legit.
The fraudster then returns to the bank outlet where the funds were deposited earlier that day. Atrue
and genuine copy of the deposit is shown to the cashier and the scam artist then claims to have
deposited the funds into the wrong supplier's bank account.
The deposit is then reversed by the person by being issued with a Bank's own Cheque to the debit of
the client's account. The Bank cheque is then cashed and the fraudster disappears with the cash and
goods.
15. Going to Durbs - keep your laptop safe!
E-block watch warns people who travel to Durban: "If you walk
out of Durban International Airport carrying alaptop you have a good
chance of being robbed.
The robbers watch while you hire a car and rob you when you park at
a shopping centre. The Workshop, Musgrave, Gateway and ICC are
hotspots.
These criminals target rented Hyundai as they easy to unlock without damaging the lock. Once in the
car they open the boot.
They somehow know there is alaptop in the boot and that you have not taken it with you.
Many victims have reported that they did not open the boot of the car after leaving the airport so
there was no way the criminals could just be targeting random rented cars, they are specifically
looking for laptops! All the dots when added up indicate that they spotyou at the airport.
The only part I cannot work out is how they know where you are going without following you...Do they
have spotters at the shopping centre who are informed you have alaptop or do they attach a magnetic
tracking device to your car at the car hire?
All the car rental companies have been targeted. The car rental companies have been aware of this

problem for months and have tried everything to stop this theft but have failed."
