Annual Report
BASKETBALL
Ipswich Grammar Basketball once again had a fantasc season both on and
o the court. This year we elded 16 teams in the GPS Championship, with
the majority being very compeve in what is now an extremely tough
compeon. I would like to personally congratulate all boys, coaches and
administrators for their eorts this season. Your commitment and atude
towards the IGS Basketball program has been instrumental in the overall
success seen this year.
Congratulaons must also go to Mr Michael Wellings and his First V for not
only their success on the court, but also the way in which they conducted
themselves o the court. Well done boys on your third placing this year in the GPS season,
and your h placing in the Queensland School Boys Championships. Thank you also to
Surface Archetypes, the ocial sponsor of the First V.
as a grudge match as we had beaten them earlier in the GPS season. We looked defeated
in a match that went into double overme. By the end we had ve players fouled out, but
the team just kept coming, never lying down. Unfortunately the State High team proved
too strong, but our boys held their heads up high despite a heart-breaking loss. This has
become the norm for this team. ‘Winning with grace, losing with dignity’ has become a
moo in the locker room.
There are a number of people who need to be thanked as this program
could not funcon without them. Firstly, thanks must go to our new MIC of
basketball, Mr Mark Fancourt. He works relessly every Saturday at home
and away matches. His professionalism is a welcome addion to the sport.
Secondly, I would also like to thank Mrs Maggie Chay, Mr Mike Murray and
Mr Marc Roeeler who acted as manager and assistant coaches respecvely.
I also need to thank Mrs Carmen Roeeler for leading the score bench and
all the other people who helped her throughout the season. Thanks also
to Mrs. Lindy Ralph, who co-ordinated the canteen, BBQ and post-game funcon for all
home games. This is not an easy job but was done brilliantly with the help of all the other
volunteers.
I would also like to thank Lindy Ralph and her hard working volunteers for their eorts this
season. Their constant diligence and commitment to the canteen and aer match funcon
was invaluable. Thank you to all the parents for your help, and I look forward to working
with you again next year. Thank you also to the parents, boys and volunteers who helped
out with the score bench this year. This is an important part of the basketball program and
everyone who assisted with the score bench did so in a professional manner. Thank you.
Finally, my personal thanks to Michael Murray, Maggie Chay and Michael Wellings for their
help and consultaon throughout the year. Their advice and support played an essenal
part in the overall operaons and logiscs of the basketball program.
MIC Basketball
The leadership team consisted of captain Jason Ralph and his depues Zac Hemsworth and
Mitchell Roeeler. They had big shoes to ll at the start of the year, replacing last year’s
inspiraonal captain David Prior, but they did their job with maturity and dedicaon. Lastly,
I must say goodbye to the deparng seniors – Zac Hemsworth, Jarrod White, Alex White,
Chris Ryan, Zac O’Meara, Zac Logan and Brayden Currey. You have all been wonderful
ambassadors for the sport and the school and I wish you the very best for all your future
endeavours.
The future is bright for IGS Basketball. Next year’s seniors led by Jason Ralph, Mitchel
Roeeler and Tung Leahy are now experienced campaigners and with some wonderful
young talent coming through such as Maneng Leahy, Alec Godinet and Verle Williams it all
looks promising. Let’s hope we can bring home the premiership in the coming years. Bring
on 2012.
2011
Mr M Wellings
FIRSTS
The Firsts enjoyed another fruiul season in 2011, nishing third with a 5-3
record and only dropping games to BBC, Nudgee and Churchie. At the state
tournament they nished in h place with a 5-2 record, which is the best
ever result for an IGS team at this tournament. One parcular game at the
state tournament highlights the courage, determinaon and spirit of this
squad. The quarter nal versus Brisbane State High School had been touted
OPENS
2011 saw some excellent basketball from the Open teams. The Seconds are
a mixture of talented basketballers who lack the consistency of play to make
the Firsts and a few boys who are fairly new to the sport. The team played
brilliantly on several occasions and made for excing and close games as
seen at Nudgee. The Thirds, lead by an enthusiasc Mr Beaumont, again
had some great players who always gave the crowd their money’s worth.
Labore et Honore
This year unfortunately, Mr Beaumont’s undefeated record was broken but the mighty
Thirds baled on to nish the season in a very respectable third place.
Mrs Maggie Chay
YEAR 11
The Year 11s were coached by Mr Murray and former First V players Sean
Timperley and Bre Cronan. The 11A team had a very successful year,
winning ve and losing three matches, one by a single point to TSS. The
team was well led by MVP Dominic Hawthorne, with Douglas Lawrence
receiving the Coaches’ Award for his excellent atude and performance
throughout the season. The 11Bs won three of their matches and lost four.
Their MVP was Ma Benn. The Coaches’ Award went to Rubin Brock. The
11C team was very enthusiasc and also won three of their seven games. The MVP was
Jamie Gillen and the Coaches’ Award went to Blake Frankish.
Mr Michael Murray
YEAR 10
It was a challenging year for the Year 10 basketball cohort, who saw many close defeats at
the hands of their opponents. However, each side conducted themselves with dignity and
true Ipswich Grammar sportsmanship. I would like to extend a big thank you to the coaches
this year for their dedicaon and experse. A special menon to the following boys who
were awarded most valuable player in 10A to 10C respecvely, Brennan Cross, Toni Lam and
Vincent Wen and for those boys who received the Coaches’ Award, Jack Pope, Sco Cronan
and Zachary Bryant. Well done to all the players for their contribuon this year.
Miss Rosanna Isbell
YEAR 9
With basketball enjoying its renaissance across the country, it is pleasing
to note that the GPS Compeon connues to provide an excellent base
for our junior players to hone their game. This year we were able to eld
compeve teams in the A, B and C compeons. Training at this level
focused on developing basic skills and introducing strategic oensive plays.
The depth of talent and enthusiasm was evident from the rst training
session with three of our A players invited to train and subsequently play
for the First V. In true IGS spirit these young men balanced dual team dues
with humility and commitment. The boys’ willingness to learn new skills
and a posive approach to the game provided us with many close and entertaining games
throughout the season. The As nished the season with an impressive 6-2 record. Players
and coaches are looking forward to capitalising on these achievements in season 2012.
Harlie Thompson
YEAR 8
Ipswich Grammar School’s inherent love for compeon was conrmed
this year by the extraordinary turnout for those trying out for a spot in one
of the Under 13 basketball teams. Based upon the high calibre of skills and
enthusiasm demonstrated by every student at the try outs, a decision was
quickly made to enter a fourth team into the compeon.
The As celebrated ve wins and one draw in 2011. Comprising of players
who will no doubt be future First V players, the team really put on a show
for the spectators each week. Also demonstrang a high level of skill and
intensity were the Bs. A ghtknit crew, the Bs enjoyed three wins this season.
Improvements were evident across the team, which should prove to be a formidable force
in the GPS compeon next year.
The Cs and Ds trained as one team every Wednesday aernoon. Their growth of skills and
tenacity in addion to their unwavering aendance to training and meengs, made it very
dicult for their coach to cull numbers for game day, oen playing with six players on each
bench. Consisng of many members who had never played basketball before, this ne
group of young men played with passion, humility and relentlessness and never forgot to
have a good me.
