Annual Report
Rugby
Rugby union has a long and proud tradion at Ipswich
Grammar. The 2011 season enhanced this tradion. About
230 students played across ve age groups
in 14 teams.
There were many highlights throughout
the 2011 season. The First XV played with
passion and a precise physicality rarely seen
at school boy level. The team’s approach to
all facets of the game provided a posive
contribuon to the tone of the season.
The large number of representave players
to emerge from the IGS Rugby ranks was also very signicant.
More than 20 IGS players represented their region, state or
country.
The most important highlight this year was the adopon by
all grades of a new coaching approach. The preseason camps
and trials indicated clearly the capacity of the IGS players’
ability to produce eecve game play when fundamental
rugby structures are adhered to. The overall results of 41%
win/loss, including trials, indicates that a transion towards
posive territory has been made. However, there is much
work to be done.
In all large seasons there are a lot of people who must be
acknowledged and thanked:
To the sponsors, thank you for ongoing support and
welcome to Westpac Bank. We look forward to a long and
fruiul relaonship.
The Rugby Support Group, whose reless work and
commitment has assisted in all aspects of the rugby
calendar.
The coaching sta from the 13Cs to the First XV. These sta
and outside coaches have been dedicated and cooperave.
Thank you for your eorts and posive mentoring role
throughout the enre season.
To the IGS workmen, thank you for the hours of work both
throughout the week and on Saturdays. The elds and
surrounds were as always a pleasure to train and play on.
Mr Peter Craig and Mr David St Clair, your eorts this year
have been invaluable and certainly appreciated by all facets
of the rugby community.
UNDER 13
The Under 13s had a challenging season
with many of IGS players coming to
terms with a new game and much larger
opponents. Despite these obstacles, all
three teams made vast improvements.
The highlights for the A team included hard
fought wins over St Edmunds and ACGS and
pushing a very good TSS team to the limit in
the nal round of the compeon.
The 13Bs showed glimpses of their true potenal and I
expect that many of these players will feature in the A
teams in coming seasons.
The 13Cs team were made up of a combinaon of Year 7
and Year 8 players. The Year 7s parcipated very well. The
early exposure to the GPS compeon will certainly assist
their development as rugby players. It was a true highlight
to see this team win well against TSS in the last round of the
compeon as it reected the genuine improvement of all
the Under 13 players.
UNDER 14
The 2011 season saw the Under 14s eld
three teams. For many players in the lower
grades this was their rst me experiencing
the sport and they adapted themselves
quite quickly to the rigger of training
and games. Under the watchful eyes and
strict training regimes of coaches Schultz,
Cronan, Baker, Van De Weyer and Hines, the players were
put through their paces each week in an eort to conquer
the opposion.
The 14Cs were a very compeve group of players who
played some outstanding rugby, showing great connuity
and grit to win ve of their games. Unfortunately at the end
of the season injuries and unavailability saw many games
played in good spirit with the help of the opposion.
The 14Bs modelled their game around a fast and slick
backline. The role of the forwards was to dominate, giving
the backline room to move. When this occurred, the team
would dig deep in both defence and aack, beang o some
very skilful opponents to register some excellent wins.
The 14As found things a bit tougher than last year, only
managing two wins for the season but going down in four
games by less than ve points (coach killers). This was far
from a disappoinng season. The improvements made and
the concepts learned by the players throughout the year
can only hold the team in good stead for 2012. Big thanks
must go to all players for their hard work and commitment
as well as Luke Van De Weyer for his role as assistant coach.
UNDER 15
This was an interesng season where the boys discovered
an increased level of compeveness. It was heartening
to see the level of physical skills improve, however work is
sll needed on the mental aspects of the game. The group
improved overall, but injuries to key players tested the
depth of the age group.
The 15As had some great wins, disappoinng
losses and near misses. The highlights of the
season were some spectacular tries from
one end of the eld to the other. One try in
parcular contained 18 to 20 passes with
some players touching the ball up to three
mes.
This is an age group with a great deal of
potenal. With hard work and greater
aenon to defensive structure, all three teams will
experience greater success. The coaching sta wish all
the players the best for future years and hope they have
learned a great deal about rugby and themselves.
2011
Labore et Honore
UNDER 16
The Under 16s began the year with good numbers for two
teams and more importantly, a great desire to learn and
improve. The commitment from the players was evident in
the preseason work at coaching clinics and preseason trials.
The Under 16s were generally strong in
aack, however were oen let down by
an inconsistent approach to defensive
technique. The players of both teams
progressed throughout the season in terms
of individual skills and team taccs.
Parcularly pleasing were the ne victories
against BGS, TGS and BBC (for the B team).
Several very closely fought matches provided
the players with useful experience as they
approach their senior year of rugby at IGS.
SECONDS and THIRDS
The 2011 season with the Seconds promised so much. This
team had the potenal to really give the GPS premiership a
real challenge. Unfortunately, the reality of trying to keep
the same team on the eld week in week out became
too dicult, with players being promoted to the 1sts and
numerous injuries to key players.
The Seconds scored some of the most entertaining tries
that one will see in a schoolboy rugby game. The try against
ACGS early in the second half involved 10 phases and
nished with a splendid backline move to score near the
posts. There were many games that the 2nds could easily
have won but let slip through their ngers in the last 10
minutes.
The Thirds have always had the reputaon of being made
up of students who love to have a game of rugby but do
not have the me or the inclinaon to devote a lot of me
to training.
This year has not been an excepon to this long-standing
approach.
REPRESENTATIVES
While this year’s team did not have a very
impressive win/loss rao, there were a
number of games that were very hard
fought on the day but did not go our way.
However, it was an enjoyable season and
all players who made the eort to travel to
the respecve venues were given plenty of
game me.
FIRST XV
Five wins and three losses for a fourth-place nish. 247 points for, 151
points against.
Oen stascs don’t tell an accurate story, but in this case it gives
a reasonable snapshot of the season. The team knows there were
opportunies lost, balanced by brilliant team work. As with any team there
were highs and lows, but the highs this year far outweighed the lows. This
was a successful season in so many ways.
An incredible team spirit permeated this year’s squad – they are mates
and they played for each other. From October 2010 this group clicked. They supported and
encouraged each other throughout a gruelling pre-season.
The players did a fantasc job throughout the season, remaining focused and mostly
adhering to game plans and taccs. Most importantly, they enjoyed themselves. Too oen
today school sport and specically school rugby is taken too seriously, mainly by the adults
in charge, and this leads to unnecessary pressure placed on the students. If this happened
to this group, they hid it well.
The team was very ably led by captains Denzel King and Tasi Tasi, terric role models on and
o the eld, and they deserve a lot of credit for the team harmony and mental toughness.
I am in admiraon of the me, eort and dedicaon put in by coaches Mr Rob Charles and
Mr Graham Hislop. The boys were so fortunate to have two passionate and knowlegible
coaches and they deserve to be congratulated for the successes and style of play that we
all enjoyed so much.
An example of the professionalism of the coaches was their ability to acknowledge the need
for and to accept assistance from external sources. Dave Eagle, a schoolboy rugby guru, was
a regular at training and had a huge input in the analysis of our play. We have come to see
Harry Norris from Sunnybank Rugby Club as our own team scrum doctor.
An integral part of the team is Craig Harsant – sports med ocer extraordinaire. Craig
single-handedly straps ankles, knees, shoulders, thighs, ears and whatever else is required.

Mr Alex McArdle
First XV Manager
Presco Fraser – high quality videoing of each game, allowing for ecient game
analysis.
Jackson McQuilty – reliable student manager, organised other boys to be
water boys, ball boys, prepared ice baths, distributed gear, etc.
We would like to sincerely thank the Headmaster, Mr Robert Henderson,
for his support and encouragement and hope he has enjoyed his rst
season of rugby.
Thank you also to Mr Nigel Greive, Mr Peter Craig and the rest of the sports
oce for their assistance and guidance.
Physioacve, in parcular boss Darin Neumann, have once again provided invaluable injury
management and game day presence.
There are so many others who allow the team to funcon smoothly on game day:
Rickie Dodd – 16A coach, pre-season condioner, on eld runner.
Miaha Gregory – on eld runner.
Dr Pleash – always present for when the physios need to refer to a higher authority.
Dr Yael Curs – oers the same service but fortunately wasn’t required this year.
