From the Head of Junior School’s Desk
Dear Parents,
Throughout this semester, our students have worked
particularly hard and I have been very pleased with progress which is outlined in the
reports which will be distributed in the first week of the student vacation. Should you
have any queries or require extra clarification of any element of your son's report, please
email the class teacher or arrange a meeting at which work samples and rubrics can
be examined. Additionally, further formal Parent-Student-Teacher interviews will be held
next semester.
During the busy semester, I have been privy
to many great performances by individuals
and groups. Even this week, our students
have been busy in extra-curricular pursuits.
On Wednesday, three of our six Junior School
debating teams competed in their first debates.
For the majority of these students, this was their
first exposure to the competitive side of debating
and has helped to form their understanding of
how to be successful in this field of speaking.
The boys worked exceptionally hard in their
preparation over recent weeks and performed
credibly. Special congratulations to the Year 5
teams (which both incorporate Year 4 students)
for their work over this time with Dr Fanshawe
and for competing so admirably in their first
competition.
Additionally, on Thursday evening, both
the Junior White and Senior White Football
(soccer) teams played in their respective grand
finals, both against Mt Crosby State School,
our traditional, annual rivals. The Junior White
team played brilliantly and, if not for the heroics
of the Mt Crosby goalkeeper in the second half,
the score would have been significantly greater
than the eventual 5-0 win to IGS. Following
this, the Senior White team won 2-0 in a vastly
different encounter, tussling in a tight battle.
Congratulations to our victorious teams. Well
done. We are all very proud of not only your
results but the manner in which you have
fought throughout the season.
Sincerely,
David Macknish
Readers' Cup
On Thursday 13 June, a team of five boys represented Ipswich Grammar School in the Reader’s Cup which is an annual
event held in select schools across Australia. It is a competition supported by the Children’s Book Council of Australia which
requires students to read five nominated books. They are then required to remember specific facts from these novels and answer
questions in a two hour competition. Year Six students, Dominic Stevenson, Kyle Palmer, Thomas Wigg, Daniel Raleigh and
Mitchell Wood represented the school and spent several weeks reading and taking notes on the books. In a highly contested
competition, the team came sixth overall and should be highly proud of their efforts! It was a pleasure to witness the commitment
of these boys over several weeks and they did an excellent job against many Year Seven teams. We would like to congratulate
the following schools who placed on the day.
