A QUEENSLAND GREAT<br />

Old Boy Ken Donald was<br />

honoured at this year’s annual<br />

Queensland Greats Awards.<br />

Emeritus Professor Donald has<br />

worked in the medical industry<br />

for more than 40 years and has<br />

authored more than 90 journal<br />

articles and textbooks.<br />

His work with AIDS control and<br />

veteran’s health will long stand as<br />

his greatest achievements.<br />

Prof Donald attended IGS<br />

from 1952-1956 and was <strong>School</strong><br />

Captain in his senior year.<br />

He was an outstanding<br />

sportsman, playing for the<br />

First XI and First XV while<br />

winning the GPS Athletics<br />

Championships in sprints and<br />

long jump.<br />

Prof Donald represented<br />

Australia in rugby union from<br />

1957-1960 and managed the<br />

Wallabies from 1979-1981.<br />

He was Deputy Director-<br />

General of Health for a decade,<br />

during which time he chaired the<br />

Drug Testing Committee at the<br />

1982 Commonwealth Games.<br />

Prof Donald was Professor<br />

and Head of the Department of<br />

Social and Preventive Medicine<br />

at the University of Queensland<br />

from 1992-1999 and Head of the<br />

<strong>School</strong> of Medicine from 2000<br />

until his retirement in 2006.<br />

While gathering information<br />

for <strong>Ipswich</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong>’s 150<br />

celebrations, Old Boys from the<br />

1930s and 1940s were interviewed.<br />

In order of their school attendance,<br />

the list includes:<br />

• Donald ‘Sandy’ McNab<br />

(1929-1935): Is one of three<br />

surviving members of the<br />

premiership-winning 1934<br />

rugby team and was selected at<br />

fullback for the Combined GPS<br />

Firsts. His career as a teacher<br />

was interrupted by WWII,<br />

where he served in the RAAF<br />

as a navigator in England.<br />

He resumed teaching in 1946<br />

and was deputy principal of<br />

Humpybong State <strong>School</strong> for<br />

a number of years. Mr McNab<br />

currently lives in Sandgate.<br />

• John Barwick Porter (1926-<br />

1930): Is <strong>Ipswich</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong>’s<br />

oldest known Old Boy and<br />

entered his 100th year on 30<br />

June. Mr Porter is the oldest<br />

master of both IGS and BGS and<br />

was a dentist by profession. He<br />

now lives in Toowoomba.<br />

• Frederick Rennie From<br />

AO (1931-1935): Is another<br />

member of the 1934 rugby<br />

team, recorded as a breakaway<br />

weighing 54kg. Mr From served<br />

in the RAAF during WWII<br />

and in the Army in the Korean<br />

War. His long involvement<br />

in primary industry was<br />

recognised in 1999 with an<br />

Order of Australia for service<br />

to the tropical and sub-tropical<br />

grains industry.<br />

• Duncan King Saxelby (1931-<br />

1932): Enlisted in the Army in<br />

March 1941 and transferred<br />

to the RAAF in December<br />

1941, training as a navigator in<br />

Canada. On arrival in England<br />

he was posted to 462 Squadron<br />

RAAF, flying special missions<br />

in Halifax bombers. After the<br />

war he established a successful<br />

partnership in the automotive<br />

industry at Darra. Mr Saxelby<br />

now lives in Corinda.<br />

• James Greives Hunt (1932-<br />

1936): The 1936 <strong>School</strong> Captain is<br />

one of three surviving members<br />

of the 1934 rugby team. He<br />

also won the GPS 100 and 440<br />

yards races in 1936. Mr Hunt<br />

was principal at a number of<br />

Queensland schools and now<br />

calls Silkstone home.<br />

• Kenneth Stewart Bannerman<br />

(1933-1936): A former bank<br />

officer who enlisted in the Army<br />

in 1939. By 1943 Mr Bannerman<br />

transferred to the RAAF, where<br />

he trained as a navigator, bomb<br />

aimer and gunner and flew<br />

special missions in England.<br />

Following discharge in 1946,<br />

he returned to banking and<br />

later worked as a law-clerk. Mr<br />

Bannerman lives in Greenslopes.<br />

• Prof Malcolm ‘Mickey’ Whyte<br />

AO (1934-1937): Dux in 1937<br />

and a Rhodes Scholar, Prof<br />

Whyte established a reputation<br />

as a leading medical researcher<br />

with appointments in Australia,<br />

England and the USA. Later in<br />

his career he shifted his focus to<br />

socio-behavioural pursuits and<br />

involved himself in community<br />

health and counselling. Prof<br />

Whyte now lives in the ACT.<br />

• John Henry Curtis CB (1936-<br />

1939): Became an engineer in the<br />

then PMG Department following<br />

RAAF service in WWII as a<br />

pilot. Mr Curtis became the first<br />

managing director of Telecom<br />

Australia in 1975 when the PMG<br />

and postal departments merged.<br />

He now lives in Sinnamon Village.<br />

• Dr Wylie Talbot Gibbs (1936-<br />

1939): Had an early career in<br />

medicine before being elected<br />

to the Australian House of<br />

Representatives as the Liberal<br />

Member for Bowman in 1963.<br />

Dr Gibbs retired to the Isle of<br />

Wight after working as a medical<br />

consultant in the UK and spends<br />

the rest of his time in Cyprus.<br />

• Dr Brian Gilmore Wilson<br />

(1937-1940): The youngest son of<br />

Dr Gilmore Wilson, Chairman<br />

of Trustees from 1928-1943,<br />

has vivid memories of his time<br />

at IGS during the 1930s with<br />

his father and older brothers<br />

Harry and Chester. Dr Wilson<br />

had a distinguished career as a<br />

pioneering ophthalmologist and<br />

retired to Cleveland.<br />

• Graham Pringle (1940-1943):<br />

The 1943 co-<strong>School</strong> Captain<br />

taught at IGS from 1947-1953.<br />

Mr Pringle later joined the state<br />

system before retiring in 1986 as<br />

a regional director. He was OBA<br />

President in 1982 and 1983.<br />

HOMECOMING<br />

This year’s Old Boys’ Day<br />

will be held on 1 September.<br />

The day will include<br />

reunions and the annual<br />

dinner at the school.<br />

<strong>Ipswich</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> will<br />

host rugby and basketball<br />

fixtures against BBC, with<br />

the First XV set to kick off<br />

at the earlier time of 2pm.<br />

The dinner will be held<br />

in the Ladley Centre at<br />

6pm for a 7pm start and<br />

will include an address by<br />

Western Downs Regional<br />

Council Mayor Ray Brown.<br />

The 1979 Old Boy was reelected<br />

at the 28 April Local<br />

Government Elections after<br />

securing 60.24% of the vote.<br />

Cr Brown represented<br />

Queensland in rugby, athletics<br />

and cricket and played for<br />

the Queensland Wanderers<br />

cricket team in Hong Kong<br />

and China in 1980.<br />

He travelled extensively<br />

after leaving IGS and was<br />

in Argentina in 1982 when<br />

the Falkland War broke out.<br />

Cr Brown was a councillor<br />

with the former Tara Shire<br />

Council for 17 years, seven<br />

as Deputy Mayor, before<br />

running for Mayor of<br />

the new Western Downs<br />

Regional Council in 2008.<br />

He has represented<br />

many committees over this<br />

period, with particular<br />

emphasis on finance, aged<br />

care, the environment,<br />

development, tourism, and<br />

rural health.<br />

Cr Brown represents an<br />

area of 38,000km2, which<br />

comprises 23 towns and 99<br />

small communities.<br />

OLD BOYS’ TRIBUTES<br />

<strong>Ipswich</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong> has<br />

been advised of the passing of<br />

the following Old Boys in the<br />

past 12 months:<br />

• Graham Brown (1954-1957): A<br />

retired maths and science teacher,<br />

died in December 2011. Mr Brown<br />

was an accomplished cricketer,<br />

tennis player and athlete.<br />

• David Victor Foote (1951-<br />

1954): A retired Air Force Wing<br />

Commander, passed away in<br />

October 2010, aged 73.<br />

• Alan Muir Gilliland (1951-<br />

1952): A retired primary school<br />

principal, passed away on 6<br />

October, 2010.<br />

• Ian Kent Hughes (1945-1948):<br />

Of Taringa passed away on 9<br />

June, 2010.<br />

• Dr Clifford Lulham (-1932): A<br />

retired medical practitioner, died<br />

on 4 April, <strong>2012</strong>, aged 98. Dr<br />

Lulham was Dux of IGS in 1932<br />

and was a champion athlete.<br />

• John Alexander Lyon (1968-<br />

1972): A teacher at IGS since<br />

1984, Mr Lyon passed away on 8<br />

June, <strong>2012</strong>.<br />

• Donald Cowton Meacham<br />

(1936-1939): Died in June 2011,<br />

aged 89. Mr Meacham was a<br />

much admired teacher at IGS in<br />

1947-1948 and 1949-1953. He was<br />

captain of the 1939 tennis team.<br />

• Jack Metta (1968-1971): Died<br />

suddenly on 4 December, 2011.<br />

Jack Metta was a national hero in PNG.<br />

Mr Metta was a PNG student<br />

who became a career journalist<br />

and spent eight years as the<br />

PNG Rugby League National<br />

Administrator. He represented<br />

the Kumuls, playing in a historymaking<br />

team that defeated<br />

France 37-6 in 1977.<br />

• Brian Perrem (1952-55): A<br />

retired bank manager, passed<br />

away in October 2010, aged 72.<br />

• Arnold James Rich (1933-1935):<br />

Died in June 2011, aged 91.<br />
