Igor Lapa and IGS Headmaster Robert Henderson outside the Great Hall in May.
FORMER HEAD VISITS
Former Ipswich Grammar
Headmaster Igor Lapa returned
to the school where he spent
more than 40 years in May.
Mr Lapa began his career at
IGS as a teacher in 1959.
He was Deputy Headmaster
from 1972 and became
Headmaster in 1990 before
retiring in 2000.
A guest of Headmaster Robert
Henderson, Mr Lapa toured the
grounds and spoke to staff and
students ahead of the school’s
150th anniversary in 2013.
“As I look around I see some
lovely changes, but it is still a
great school. That indomitable
spirit of Ipswich Grammar
School is definitely still here,” Mr
Lapa said.
“When I began my time here
Ipswich Grammar was a tiny
school that needed to establish
its reputation and strength.
“Boys are able to get an
all-round education and
when I retired I felt I had
contributed something to their
development.”
Mr Henderson said Mr
Lapa had made an “amazing
contribution” to Ipswich
Grammar.
“It’s important to acknowledge
the people who have given so
much to our school and helped
shape Ipswich Grammar into
what it is today,” he said.
“We look forward to
welcoming Mr Lapa at a future
school assembly.”
IGS CALLS FOR WORK
EXPERIENCE SUPPORT
The Ipswich Grammar School
Careers and Counselling Centre
is looking for employers who can
offer students voluntary work
experience.
Students usually organise their
own placements, however the
school would like to produce a
database of employers.
Ipswich Grammar would like
to hear from Old Boys who are
interested in taking one or two
students per year for up to a
week at a time.
The non-compulsory work
experience program only
involves students who have
expressed interest in a particular
industry.
Boys interested in trades can
do a school-based apprenticeship
of one day a week while they
are in years 11 and 12, or work
experience towards the end of
Year 12 with the view to doing
a full-time apprenticeship when
they finish school.
Any assistance would be
greatly appreciated.
