FIRSTS The Ipswich Grammar First XI bounced back from last week’s disappointing loss with a solid 3-2 win over Brisbane Boys’ College. This match was marked as Heritage Round in celebration of Ipswich’s 150 years of schooling. There has been a long and fierce rivalry between to the two schools that both have excellent footballing programs and have played some tough encounters over many years. As the players and officials gathered for a pre-game luncheon with the past captains of IGS, it was clear that this match meant a lot to the players of both teams. When the match got under way it was a double from Joe Duckworth that saw IGS take an early lead. Unfortunately a lapse in concentration allowed BBC back into the match just moments before half time. Instead of Coach Morgan talking to his players about the dangers of a 2-0 lead, he was forced to talk to the boys about concentration. “There were occasions in the match where we got caught up in the excitement of the crowd, and didn’t play with enough composure,” Morgan said. “When we held onto the ball for too long it allowed BBC time to get behind the ball and get their defensive structures set. They are a well-coached team and you cannot give them time and space. ” The second half was much like the first with the young BBC midfield battling hard. However, this time IGS was creating the better chances and it seemed only a matter of time before they would find the back of the net. It was Tom Webster who put his name on the scoresheet as he showed great strength to beat a couple of BBC defenders and put the ball past the keeper with a wellplaced shot in the bottom corner. IGS seemed in control and should have finished one of the many chances they had created to put the game beyond doubt. Instead, a lack of urgency at the back saw BBC invited into the game with a well finished goal. It was IGS that finished the game the strongest to ensure they received all three points and secured third position on the GPS Ladder. There is just one round left of the GPS season, with IGS to celebrate ‘Think Pink’ as they host Churchie. Mr Mark Fancourt MIC Football mfancourt@ipswichgrammar.com CONGRATULATIONS TO...
