Dear Parents,
From the Head of Junior School’s Desk
Junior School Leadership Induction Assembly
Next Tuesday (9am), the entire Junior School will gather in the auditorium for a short but
meaningful assembly designed to induct our Year 6 students into their roles as leaders
for the year. Each of the Year 6 students has responsibilities to work actively amongst
the student body to help guide them to become fine young Junior School gentlemen.
The process for determining these appointments from the many nominations has sought
to identify which of the nominees have demonstrated or show the potential to show the
previously outlined qualities inherent in student leaders. This has been a very difficult
process as we have looked for those with the characteristics required to lead rather
than those who are simply good quality young men. It is a painful process also, both
for those who seek this recognition and are unsuccessful and also for staff who need
to make these tough decisions in consultation with an incredible amount of quality
student feedback and data. I have been determined to ensure that the process has not
been a popularity contest for the students but bases judgements on tangible qualities
recognised by both staff and students. Similarly it has been essential to ensure that the
process has been open to all students, even those who have only joined IGS this year.
Hence the appointments are being made in the middle of the term. I am finalising these
appointments currently and hope to announce these to the student body by Monday.
Congratulations to all those Year 6 students who have put their names forward as
worthwhile candidates. I look forward to showcasing the men in addition to all of our
leaders at next Tuesday’s assembly. Parents are more than welcome to attend.
Transition to Prep Information Evening (Get Set for Prep)
On Thursday 1 March, all prospective families are welcome to attend an information
evening on the transition to Prep. The Head of Junior School, Prep/Year 2 Co-ordinator
and Prep teachers will speak about various topics about Prep year. The evening will
commence at 6.30pm and conclude at 7.30pm in the Earle Williams Literacy Centre.
Please encourage any family, friends or associates who are about to embark on the Prep
journey in the next few years to join us. This event is open to the entire community and
is not specific to Ipswich Grammar School, with no enrolment obligations or pressure to
enrol. Parents of girls are welcome also.
Junior Schools' Invitational Swimming Carnival
Tomorrow, the Junior School Swimming Team competes in the Junior Schools’ Invitational
Swimming Carnival against our rival GPS schools. These boys have been training hard
for weeks now with early morning arrivals and sessions in the pool. I cannot impress
enough on parents how exciting and wonderful this commitment is to see. Mr Morgan
and Mrs Thompson inform me that our team this year is very strong and I look forward to
reporting next week on the excellent efforts and results of tomorrow’s carnival. Each year,
IGS brings spirit and cheering to this carnival and other schools in recent years have
taken our lead to add some atmosphere for the spectators and swimmers. It promises to
be a great occasion for Ipswich Grammar School. Good luck, boys.
Sincerely,
David Macknish
Parent Lounge Access
In order to ensure that all parents are able to access Parent Lounge, the school will re-issue login details and passwords for
parents. For families who accessed the online booking system last year for Parent-Student-Teacher interviews, these details are
the same. However, it is possible that some parents may have misplaced these. Upon receipt of these passwords, please access
Parent Lounge via the links of the school website (www.ipswichgrammar.com -> link to MyIpswichGrammar -> click on the Parent
Lounge icon in the top right corner)
We recognise that the passwords issued are difficult to remember and the ICTS department is working to find a simple way for
parents to be able to change their own passwords. However, at this time all of these changes need to be done manually by the
school. Please contact Junior School reception if you would like assistance or to change your password.
Ipswich District Swimming Carnival
Last Friday the IGS Pool hosted the Ipswich District Primary Swim Carnival. This provided our Junior Swim Squad with their first
major meet of the year. After 3 weeks of early morning starts Mr Morgan’s ‘superfish’ were pumped and ready to race. It was
evident early on that all their hard work was beginning to pay off with several of our swimmers finishing with PBs-Personal Best
times.
The IGS team led the field of schools right up until the last relays where we were pipped by West Moreton Anglican School to
finish with 2nd place overall. Those girls really made a difference!
Several IGS men were named Age Champion; Rhyce Grieve (under 9), Sean Kearney (under 10) and Archie Owen (under 11)
while a large group (17) were named in the Regional team.
Well done to all involved. A big thank you to all our coaches; Miss Chandler, Mr Fasala , Ms Watts and of course Mr Morgan. We
continue training hard this week for the Junior GPS Invitational at TSS on Friday 24 February.
