Dear Parents,
From the Head of Junior School’s Desk
Moving into the final week, it seems that Term 4 should only just have begun.
However, we are well into the process of rounding the year off with reports almost
completed, class placements completed and Speech Night rehearsals almost
completed.
One of our special teachers calls it a day at the end of this year. For Mrs Burns,
teaching has been a passion for the last fifty years. One only needs to walk past her
classroom to witness her devotion to her young charges. She continues to squeeze
every last teachable moment out of these last few days of the year to make a
difference for her boys.
We are blessed to have had Mrs Burns conclude her teaching career at IGS. Having
been coaxed out of a previous retirement, I know that she will remain a close IGS
friend in future years, visiting occasionally and maybe assisting in small periods of
relief work and maybe even leading some performance groups. However, next year
holds other challenges as Mrs Burns embarks on directorial duties in the local Ipswich
Little Theatre Company. Having been a passion for many years, finally this is the
chance to be able to commit the enormous amounts of time and energy to this other
love alongside Mr Burns.
We will miss Mrs Burns’ energy, enthusiasm, intelligence, guidance, wit and devotion.
She has touched so many in her few short years teaching at IGS.
We will be holding an evening in Mrs Burns’ honour and would be delighted to have
any parents, past students and staff members who would like to wish Mrs Burns well
attend.
Invitation
After 50 years in the profession, Mrs Shirlee Burns is retiring. Having assisted so many
students, parents and staff, it is now time to celebrate Shirlee’s achievements and wish
her well in her new endeavours.
Date: Tuesday 1 December
Time: 6.00-7.30pm
Venue: Staff lounge (first floor of main administration block – The Ladley Building)
Finger food and non-alcoholic drinks to be served.
Invitation extended to all parents, past students, staff, friends and past acquaintances
of Mrs Shirlee Burns to help celebrate her retirement from fulltime teaching.
R.S.V.P. by Wednesday 25 November to Mrs Kym Horsey on 3813 9630.

Speech Night
A reminder of some of the crucial details for Speech Night on Thursday 26 November:
Time:
• Final rehearsals will take place from 5.00-6.00pm (Listed below).
• Doors open to audience members at 6.00pm.
• All boys to report to their teachers in their class seating areas by 6.15pm.
• Commences 6.30pm.
• Aimed to conclude approx 8.15pm.
Dress:
• All students to wear full formal school uniform (without hats).
• Year 4 students to wear ties.
• Year 5 & 6 students to wear ties, trousers and blazers.
P-1 Early Collection:
Parents in Prep and Year 1 should have notified their son’s class teacher by now with an indication if they will be
taking advantage of the early collection opportunity. This will take place in the program following the Headmaster/CEO
Address and as the Year 4-6 award recipients are marshalling. All P-1 boys who are being collected by parents will be
escorted to the paved courtyard between the Auditorium and the Great Hall, beyond the confines of the Auditorium
precinct, where they will await parents under supervision. Please be mindful that the formalities will continue and it is
requested that parents moving to collect their P-1 students do so with minimal noise and disruption.
Should parents wish to drop off passengers directly at the Auditorium, cars will be able to enter the school grounds via
the Darling Street entrance , drop off at the Auditorium and then proceed out to Woodend Road to seek parking.
Giving Tree:
The Giving Tree again will operate. These gifts will be distributed via one of Ipswich’s local charity programs. Boys are
asked to bring a small gift, wrapped with the age and whether it is for a boy, girl or adult written on it, for depositing
under the tree. These will be put to very good use when distributed to families less fortunate than our own over
Christmas. This is an opportunity to ensure that our boys are able to think of others at this time. Many boys look to
purchase a small gift from their own pocket money, further reinforcing their generosity. The Giving Tree will be set up
at the front of the Auditorium so that boys can place their gifts under it upon arrival.
Final rehearsals:
The following groups are required to attend final performance rehearsals from 5.00pm:
• Year 6 speakers
• Year 5 Band
• Junior IGS Singers (Choir)
Camps
Camps for Year 4 and 5 are approaching rapidly and boys are being made acutely aware that only students who meet
the behaviour criteria (Levels 1, Bronze, Siler or Gold) will be invited. These camps provide an exciting and enjoyable
social end to the year and enable the boys to develop relationships with other boys beyond their own class as the get
ready to move into the next year level in 2010.
Class Lists
Class lists for 2010 have been compiled over the past two months in consultation with the class teachers. These
teachers have discussed the social, emotional and academic needs of each student and sought to place them
strategically according to these requirements. These lists are now final and each family should receive a letter in the
next few weeks outlining the staffing make up for 2010 and the teacher to whom their son has been allocated. It is
Junior School policy not to post whole class lists to families.
Final Day of the School Year
Please note that school concludes on Friday 27 November at 12.00pm. While Year 2-6
students usually wear their sports uniform on Fridays due to their participation in sporting
activities in the afternoon, I ask that all boys wear their grey uniforms for this final half
day. Buses will depart in line with the half day allocation.
The placement of the JS Speech Night on the Thursday evening before the conclusion of
school is purposeful in order to finish the year on a crescendo. As the final morning is only
a half day of finishing off and celebrating with students prior to the final Assembly, those
parents of younger boys who wish to keep their son home following the slightly later
evening the night before are more than welcome to do so.

Meanjin Young Writers’ Camp
I would like to commend Patrick Moroney (6C) for attending the recent Meanjin Writers’ Camp at Brookfield. He spent
three days working alongside like-minded peers with a passion for writing and being mentored by writers of the ilk of
Ross Clarke, Simon Higgins, Pat Flynn and Sue Gough. I know that Patrick learned much in this time and look forward
to his next adventure narrative.
Patrick particularly connected with Simon Higgins, whose books often have a Japanese context infused with cultural
information and samurai references.
TUCKSHOP NEWS
On Saturday 14 th November, the ladies from the tuckshop attended the Queensland Tuckshop of the Year Awards.
These Awards are held annually through the Queensland Smart Choices Program, with nominations from all over the
State, which included Primary, Secondary and Private Schools. Our Tuckshop at IGS was short listed in two
categories, Tuckshop of the year and Convener of the Year. As this was the first time we had entered, to be short
listed was a very proud achievement.
Maureen would like to thank her Staff, the IGS Staff, volunteers and Students for their support over the year and look
forward to next year. To all the volunteers who have helped throughout the year, please note, our Christmas Morning
Tea will be held on Tuesday, 24 th November from 10am. All are welcome. Please RSVP to 3280 1350 by Monday
BASC NEWS
We have recently completed our budget for the 2010 year. This has helped us identify some issues that may affect
the service provided in the near future. One of these being a much needed fee increase to help us with Compliance,
Licensing, wages, running costs, equipment and administration of the Service. It has been 3 years since we
commenced the Before and After School Hours Care facility in 2006 and we have not increased our fees during this
time however, the costs of running this service have increased considerably. We advise that as from January 1 2010
our fee for each session will increase. Parents receiving Child Care Benefit will have their fees adjusted accordingly.
The new fee structure for 2010 will be as follows:
Care Type Previous Fee New Fee Permanent New Fee Casual
Before School Care $3 per ½ hour $4 per ½ hour $5 per ½ hour
After School Care $3 per ½ hour $4 per ½ hour $5 per ½ hour
Vacation Care $30 per day $35 per day $40 per day
½ day Care $15 per ½ day $20 per ½ day $25 per ½ day
Excursion costs during vacation care are charged extra depending on the activity. Details are available upon booking.
Permanent fees are for regular weekly bookings. Casual fees are for bookings taken with less than 24 hours
notice – and sufficient spaces are available.
Ipswich Grammar School BASC would like to thank families for their continued support in 2010. For any queries
please contact Sue Corke – Director BASC on 0439 077 650. Bill Allan - Secretary to Board of Trustees

29 TH ANNUAL MEANJIN WRITER’S CAMP 2009
On Thursday 5 th to Sunday 8 th November, I attended the 29 th Annual Meanjin Writer’s Camp at the Queensland
Conference and Camping Centre in Brookfield. From the 150 applications, 70 students from Years 6 to 8 were
selected to attend. There were five Authors who attended, Simon Higgins, Pat Flynn, Terry O’Connor, Ross Clarke
and Sue Gough. The Authors ran workshops with about 15 students to the one Author. We had to choose two
writer’s workshops, one for Friday and most of Saturday, and a second Author for another session on Saturday
afternoon.
I chose to attend Simon Higgins’ workshop and boy, was he fantastic!. Firstly, he told us about dramatic openings,
then ways of defining characters, good ways of planning stories and then he talked about the publishing industry. My
second Author was Terry O’Connor, a journalist who has recently published a book celebrating Queensland’s 150 th
Anniversary. Friday and Saturday nights were presentation nights. On Friday, we presented drama acts and then on
Saturday we presented some of our written work. Mr Macknish, whose daughter Emma, also attended the camp,
came on Saturday night. He is currently the President of the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association, Brisbane
Council.
I would like to thank Mr Macknish for suggesting I attend this camp, as it was a fun and great experience for young
budding Authors. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in writing to apply to attend next year (I will be).
FROM THE JUNIOR SCHOOL ART ROOM
Only 1 week to go until the end of another very busy term and indeed, year in the Junior School Art room.
Most of the boys are finishing off the last of their projects – Year 6’s are working with recycled materials to make
Robots, the Year 5’s are completing their Kites which they will (hopefully) be flying in the coming week or so, and the
Year 4’s are putting the finishing touches to wire figures and photo frames.
The last batch of Junior School Artist of the Month for 2009 have been selected.
These Year 6 boys have not only worked consistently well throughout the year, they have produced some outstanding
Lino Prints and Masks.
Congratulations to the following boys:
YEAR 4-6 INTERHOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Finally we were able to complete the carnival which was halted due to appalling weather back in March. The beautiful
blue skies and warm water proved a big contrast to the last time we attempted to run the carnival.
Congratulations to all for the friendly, yet competitive, spirit in which the competition was completed. Throughout the
course of the day, Eugene Koorts and Martin Koorts set a total of eight new school age records. Fantastic! No surprise
then when it was announced that they each had achieved their respective age champion goals.
Final results:
1 st - Cameron- 638pts
2 nd - Kerr-488pts
3 rd - Hawthorne-468pts
4 th - Lawrance- 460pts
Age Champions:
U10: Liam Harrigan
