Federal Way Philharmonic and the Interfaith
Choir of Seattle in a sold-out performance of
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in the Seattle
Opera House during the Goodwill Games.
In April of 1991, Davenport began the first
The Federal Way Chorale
The Federal Way Chorale was founded in
the Spring of 1993 by a small group of Federal
Way musicians-people who loved to sing and
saw a need for a community choir that emphasized
the performance of quality choral
literature from all ages and styles. Over 130
singers auditioned for the Chorale. Eightyeight
were chosen and the Federal Way
Chorale, under the direction of Don Barrows,
began its first rehearsal in the Fall of 1993. In
its first season, the Chorale's repertoire consisted
not only of major works such as Handel's
Messiah and Schubert's Mass in G, but also a
wide variety of quality octavos from "Bach to
Broadway." Now in their second season, the
Chorale numbers over 100 singers.
The Philharmonic looks forward to many
years of collaboration with the Chorale.
Suite des Symphonies No.1
(Masterpiece Theater theme)
by JeanJ. Mouret (1682 -1738)
Jean Mouret was a French composer born
in Avignon, on April 11, 1682. While attached
to the court in Paris, he wrote an opera and
two opera-ballets. He also wrote motets for the
Concert Spirituel (where he was director) and
divertissements for the Comedie-Italienne.
During his lifetime he had 50 chamber pieces
published. Suite des Symphonies No.1 is
known today as the familiar theme for
television's Masterpiece Theater.
Finale, Symphony No.2 "Little Russian"
by Peter I. Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893)
Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, Russia.
He began a career in law but soon gave it up
for music. During this period, the Russian elite
was trying to remake Russia along modernized
Western lines. Many people thought Russia
was in danger of losing its identity, and the
composer Balakirev started an anti-Western
group called the "Russian Five." Balakirev had
little formal musical training and felt others
could compose without training as well. He
encouraged his colleagues-Mussorgsky,
Rirnsky-Korsakov, Borodin, and Cui-to be
innovative, self-sufficient, and clumsy if
necessary. Balakirev advised Tchaikovsky as
well, but Tchaikovsky chose to express his
own nationalism by using standard Western
forms to develop his distinctively Russian
sound. His music became so popular in
Europe, that along with Saint-Saens and Grieg,
he received the honorary degree of Doctor of
Music from Cambridge in 1893.
We've got what @
you're hUngry for.
"Little Russia" is another name for the
Ukraine and the subtitle to the Second Symphony
refers to two Ukrainian folk melodies
used in the symphony, one in the first movement
and one in the last movement. It is the
last movement, Finale, that has made this
symphony so popular. It begins with a spirited
Ukrainian tune which is a dance theme in the
major key. It is like a ceremonial introduction
followed by variations. Then comes a softer
second theme followed by a development
section which contrasts the two. It ends with a
joyous recapitulation and coda.
"Dona Nobis Pacem"
by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750)
Bach was the greatest organist of his time,
and he made his living by writing music for the
church. He did, however, write some nonreligious
cantatas. They were pieces written to
entertain and flatter the princes and electors at
their weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and
other ceremonies. These secular cantatas are
settings. The vocalists play the part of characters
from Greek mythology in highly dramatic
scenes. "Sheep May Safely Graze", from Bach's
Hunting Cantata, evokes a feeling of heavenly
peace and a musical picture of shepherds
quietly tending their flocks. It creates a scene
of peace on earth for the Christmas season.
The Mass in B Minor is one of the sublime
works in sacred art. It is considered Bach's
most significant composition in the field of
sacred music. He worked on it for nearly
twenty-five years. It consists of 25 substantial
choral and solo pieces and is brought to a
glorious finish by "Dona Nobis Pacem".
"The Heavens Are Telling"
from The Creation
by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809)
Haydn grew up as an Austrian peasant, but
through his musical talent rose to great fame.
In the 18th Century, the common people had
access to church music and street music, but
"classical" music was reserved for the wealthy
families, who hired their own orchestras and
Kapellmeisters to direct and write the music.
Haydn was already a celebrated musician
when he became Kapellmeister for the
Esterhazys. He enjoyed a good salary, was
assured performances of his compositions, and
had an orchestra and choir at his beck and call
for experimentation. He served Prince Nicolaus
Esterhazy for 28 years. When the old prince
died in 1790, he was succeeded by his son
Prince Anton. Anton did not share his father'S
love for music and so dismissed the members
of the orchestra. He kept Haydn on salary but
left him free to do what he wanted.
During this time Haydn went to London
where he was a great success. It was here that
he helped define the evolving symphony.
While in England he was commissioned to
write a new opera, six symphonies, and 20
smaller compositions. After 5 years the 63-yearold
composer left England, not to retire but to
begin a new musical venture-writing choral
music. Prince Anton Esterhazy had died and his
successor, Nicolaus II, called Haydn back to
Austria to restore the orchestra to its former
glory. Haydn would spend 15 years serving this
Esterhazy prince who would be the hardest of
all to satisfy.
The Prince professed a love of mUSiC,but
not especially for Haydn's. He preferred the
music of some minor composers but hired the
famous Haydn as his Kapellmeister to make
14

himself the envy of many other potentates. The
work Haydn did for his narrow-minded patron
was not very satisfying. Before he left London,
Haydn said: " I want to write a work that will
give permanent fame to my name in the
world." Haydn was convinced that an oratorio
would do just that. When Haydn asked his
friend Barthelemon to suggest a suitable
subject for an oratorio, he pointed to the Bible
and exclaimed: " There! Take that, and begin at
the beginning." And so he began composing
The Creation. The work progressed slowly
because he wanted it to last a long time, and
the years he spent on it were some of the
happiest in his life. It premiered in Vienna and
soon was popular in London and Paris as well.
It was an attraction for many years and proved
to be quite a financial success .
