Welcome and Call to Confession
Confession and Forgiveness
Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God:
the only Sovereign, who dwells in light;
Christ Jesus, who came to save sinners;
the Holy Spirit, who lives within us.
Amen.
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Silence is kept for reflection.
God of overflowing grace,
we come to you with repentant hearts.
Forgive us for shallow thankfulness.
Forgive us for passing by the ones in need.
Forgive us for setting our hopes on fleeting treasures.
Forgive us our neglect and thoughtlessness.
Bring us home from the wilderness of sin,
and strengthen us to serve you
in all that we do and say;
through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
There is joy in heaven over every sinner who repents.
By the grace of God in + Christ Jesus,
who gave himself up for us all,
your sins are forgiven and you are made free.
Rejoice with the angels and with one another!
We are home in God's mercy, now and forever.
Greeting
Sisters and brothers in Christ,
beloved children of God:
grace, mercy, and peace be with you all.
And also with you.
Prayer of the Day
Let us pray …
O God, overflowing with mercy and compassion,
you search for and bring back all those who go astray.
Preserve your people in your loving care,
that we may reject whatever is contrary to you
and may follow all things that sustain our life in your Son,
Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen
First Lesson: Exodus 32:7-14
Word
The LORD said to Moses, "Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought
up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; they have been quick to
turn aside from the way that I commanded them; they have cast for themselves
an image of a calf, and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said,
'These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of
Egypt!'" The LORD said to Moses, "I have seen this people, how stiff-necked
they are. Now let me alone, so that my wrath may burn hot against them
and I may consume them; and of you I will make a great nation."
But Moses implored the LORD his God, and said, "O LORD, why does
your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you brought out of the land
of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians
say, 'It was with evil intent that he brought them out to kill them in the
mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth'? Turn from
your fierce wrath; change your mind and do not bring disaster on your people.
Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, how you swore to
them by your own self, saying to them, 'I will multiply your descendants like
3
the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your
descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.'" And the LORD changed his
mind about the disaster that he planned to bring on his people.
Holy wisdom, holy word.
Thanks be to God.
Second Lesson: Timothy 1:12-17
I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he
judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, even though I was formerly
a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received
mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord
overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying
is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the
world to save sinners — of whom I am the foremost. But for that very reason
I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display
the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come
to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible,
the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
Holy wisdom, holy word.
Thanks be to God.
Gospel Acclamation
4
Holy Gospel: Luke 15:1-10
The holy gospel according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.
Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him.
And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, "This fellow
welcomes sinners and eats with them."
So he told them this parable: Which one of you, having a hundred
sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness
and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it,
he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls
together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, for I
have found my sheep that was lost.' Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy
in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons
who need no repentance.
Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them,
does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds
it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying,
'Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.' Just so, I tell
you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who
repents."
Offertory Prayer
Let us pray…
Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were
gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered
together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the
glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen.
Opening Dialog
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Proper Preface
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,
that we should at all times and in all places
give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God,
through our Savior Jesus Christ;
who on this day overcame death and the grave,
and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life.
And so, with all the choirs of angels,
with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, especially those most dear
to us,
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Holy, Holy, Holy
7
Eucharistic Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer
Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son,
who reached out to heal the sick and suffering,
who preached good news to the poor,
and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all.
In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension,
we await his coming in glory.
Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord,
and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food,
the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord;
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be all honor and glory, now and forever.
Amen.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your
will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive
us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time
of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory
are yours, now and forever. Amen.
School Kits Being Assembled for LWR
To the children who receive School Kits from Lutheran World Relief, the supplies in an
LWR school kit can mean the difference between getting an education or not. Public school
is usually free, but in the places where LWR works, even a few required supplies, like pens
and paper, may be more than many families can afford. And when parents can only afford
to send one of their children to school, girls rarely get priority … yet the education level of
mothers has the biggest impact on development.
PRLC’s Spirited Women will be assembling school kits for LWR over the next few
weeks. If you can help, please bring some or all of these items to go into the kits. Please note
that items must be EXACTLY as described below, or LWR cannot use them:

Four 70-sheet notebooks of wide– or college-ruled
paper, approximately
8”x10.5” (NO LOOSE-LEAF PAPER)
One 30-centimeter ruler
One pencil sharpener
One blunt scissors

Five blue or black ballpoint pens (NO
GEL INK)
One box of 16 or 24 crayons
2½” erasers
Please bring in your school kit donations by
The WAY: Past, Present, and Future
Twenty years ago PRLC adopted “The
WAY”— a new process for bringing people
to Christ and into the church. Come see
and hear some stories of its early days as
well as listen to an update on this important
ministry during this time of transition.
Upcoming Adult Forums
October 6: TWO Offerings!
1) St. Francis – Life and History
Join Pastor Dick Christensen to look at the
life and times of St. Francis and his legacy
to the Christian community. This Adult Forum
will be a great accompaniment to the
traditional blessing of the animals at the
8:30 service.
2) Parents with Teens – Adolescence: A
Time for Rejoicing (really!)
The first meeting of this circle will focus on
just what the developmental phase of adolescence
is all about. Information will be
provided about what’s going on physically
(aka hormones), emotionally, and culturally
with today’s teens, and how parents can
help their teens and themselves grow
through— and even enjoy— this time in
their youngsters’ lives.
October 13: TWO Offerings!
1) Women in the Church
According to the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians
14, "women should remain silent in the
churches." Come again? Phinney has had
active women in the church since its beginning
in 1913 as a Greenwood Ladies
Aid, from women serving on the council to
female pastors for a number of years.
There are other churches that today still
disagree with having women in church
leadership roles (usually citing Paul). What
is our response to the interpretation that
the Bible, and Christianity in general, degrades
and disrespects women by exclusion
from church leadership? Come ready
to study, reflect and discuss with each other.
All are welcome! Organized by Hannah
Frelot.
2) Caregiver Circle
Pastor Christensen will meet with the group
this month to share his personal story of
caregiving and loss and to prayerfully listen
to all in the group who wish to share their
stories.
