Core Subjects Religious Education Course Description Marian College is a Brigidine school, established by a group of sisters whose central goal was to provide education, especially Religion. Today we try to continue in this same spirit by embracing the Brigidine Core Values and Awakenings Curriculum that will engage all students. At Year 7 students study units of work designed to allow students to settle in to a Catholic school and further develop their spirituality. These are: 1. My story. 2. Lent – Easter 3. The Mass as a celebration 4. Using your Talents 5. Saints and Heroes 6. Getting to know the Bible 7. Prayer – Mandala 8. Christmas All students are also involved in the understanding and presentation of The Stations of the Cross which takes place in Term One. Assessment 1. My Story – Poster and Oral presentation 2. Bible Assignment 3. Saints and Heroes Assignment 4. Christmas around the World – Oral Presentation English Course Description There are three dimensions to the Year 7 English course. They are Writing, Reading, and Speaking and Listening. Students of Year 7 English will focus on the relationship between form and meaning in spoken and written texts. Emphasis is placed on the way texts use language to construct meaning, including the way in which grammar works. Assessment Tasks • Responses to texts- Various activities including written and verbal tasks. • Writing – Exploration of a variety of styles and techniques • Oral Activities – Formal and informal. • Comprehension and Analysis – Interpretation of different points of view and of different issues • Language Studies – Including spelling and grammar activities. Science Focus To develop scientifically rich student minds in the areas listed below. To allow students to see the connections between science and life. To develop curiosity and a spirit of inquiry that helps become open-minded. Core Subjects Mathematics Course Description Year 7s have 6 periods of 72 minutes a fortnight for mathematics. They will be engaged in activities from the areas of Space, Number, Measurement, Chance and Data and Algebra. An up-to-date workbook should be maintained. This should contain neatly arranged notes and worked examples and completed class work. Year 7 students will have homework once a week and it is an expectation that all homework is attempted and handed in on the due date. A number of problem solving or modelling activities will be undertaken. These may directly relate to class work or they may be from a separate area of study. The activities will require students to use mathematics creatively in order to solve unfamiliar problems as well as applying mathematical methods to real life problems. The use of technology, including calculators and computers, will be integrated into the course. Topics • Whole Number • Fractions • Decimals • Percentages • Algebra • Measurement Assessment The assessment for each unit of work will be by means of class test(s) and may also include activities, problems or a project. SOSE (Study of Society & Environment) Course Description The first topic that is studied in Yr 7 SOSE is the history of Marian College. Students learn about the foundations of Brigidine education and the specific history of Marian College, Ararat. The students are then introduced to Mapping, where a variety of features are identified and used in the creation of our own maps of local places. The focus in Semester 2 is on Indigenous Culture, where the students learn about the importance of religion, Indigenous education, connections to country, language, music, famous political campaigns, artwork, amongst other aspects of Indigenous culture. The students also choose an ancient civilisation to research. Assessment Tasks 1) Oral Presentation. The students are required to present their findings on an ancient civilisation. 2) Board Game. Quiz questions are formed from the information learned from the unit on Brigidine History. 3) Research Project. Students investigate an aspect of Indigenous Culture and present it in a multi modal format. 23
