When Scott Bergman was being treated at a local hospital, he noticed an unusual sculpture in the lobby. It struck such a chord with him that he decided to find a way to bring more of George Rhoads’ rolling ball machines to children in need. “Since I knew from personal experience how difficult hospital stays were for adults, I wanted to make it a little easier for kids who had to be hospitalized,” says Bergman. He consulted Bruce Devlin, a Springfield attorney, about starting a private foundation to support his idea. In light of the costs and timing, Bruce advised him to start a donor advised fund instead, “Under the circumstances, I thought the money should be spent on the children and not legal fees.
