After a 41 year teaching career at Northampton’s Clarke School for the Deaf, Priscilla Pike is helping her community as an active member of First Church of Northampton. When her beloved church announced a capital campaign to repair its historic meeting house and sanctuary, Priscilla wanted to respond generously. At the same time, she was concerned about preserving her future financial security. Her financial advisor, Rob Ostberg, suggested working with the Community Foundation to meet her goals. He knew Priscilla’s appreciated securities were paying only modest dividends, and she would face a capital gain tax if she were to sell these assets to invest them elsewhere or make an outright gift to charity. At his suggestion, she established the Priscilla L. Pike Charitable Gift Annuity. As Priscilla explained, “I found out that I could use the stock my parents gave to me to produce a better stream of income during my lifetime, gain tax benefits and, after my lifetime, First Church will benefit from my generosity.
