NEWSLETTER DEADLINE
I will be typing the May/June 2009 newsletter on Tuesday,
April 14th. Please have all articles to me no later
than 9:00 am on the 14th. You can put your article in a
plain envelope marked, “Attention: Michele” and drop it in
the collection basket, bring it into the parish office or email
me at schmitzm@archmil.org.
We express our sympathy to the
Melander family at the death of
Ursula Melander, who died this
past week. May she find peace and
happiness with our Lord Jesus in
heaven.
PEW VIEW
“STANDING ROOM ONLY!”
The parking lot filled early and some people had to walk
long distances after finding a scarce spot. A low haze of
smoke from a crackling fire wafted gently above the increasing
throng. Lines formed at all entrances. Even those
who came regularly could not get their prime seats. Latecomers
were admitted to the standing-room-only spots
which sometimes had limited views. Yet, a festive spirit
filled the air and people were in a joyous mood for this, after
all, was a once-a-year event, not to be missed. It was…
Easter at St. James!
Fr. Art has often said that baseball is the paradigm for life
and so opening day at Miller Park seems to kindle the
same kind of spirit as Easter does in the Church. Parking
lots fill early. Smoke from the Easter Vigil fire hangs in the
air like a thousand burning kettle cookers. Weekly attendees
suddenly find their regular pews filled with strangers.
Large crowds fill the church to overflowing capacity and
necessitate standing room only spots. People come late,
some leave early. All seem happy and festive. Next weeks’
parking will be easier and more seats will be available. The
“die-hards” will be back, faithful followers who participate
fully and give their support no matter the circumstances.
They hang on until the very end. These are the true believers.
Alleluia! Happy Easter!
Just like opening day ushers in a whole new season so
does Easter usher in the opportunity for new…life! Today is
a day of beginnings, of rising from the dead, and starting a
whole new way of living in Jesus Christ. No wonder the
crowds are “standing room only!” Alleluia!
Continuing with the baseball motif, the start of a new season
usually brings a slate of new players. So does Easter
bring new members into the Church. It brings the
“rookies” (the un-baptized and uninitiated) to
“veterans” (those already baptized but now making a profession
of faith as a Catholic).
This year we will celebrate the baptisms of Sophia Murphy
(an infant) and Melody Zimmerman (a 5 th grader).
Those making professions of faith are: Benjamin Corcoran,
Heidi Schwartz, Matthew Purfuerst, Kyle Purfuerst, and
Natalia Bedolla.
Benjamin and Heidi, along with Tom Purfuerst, who made
his profession of faith in fall, will celebrate the sacrament of
Confirmation. Natalia, Matthew, Kyle, Melody, Benjamin
and Heidi will be welcomed to the table of the Lord for Holy
Communion for the first time.
We rejoice and celebrate with them and their families on
this festive day of Resurrection and New Life!
The baseball analogy is not perfect for baseball after all it
is only a game. Our faith is about life – eternal life! With
Easter we begin a new season but we already know who
has the victory – Jesus, risen and victorious over sin and
death! Enjoy the season!
Alleluia! Happy Easter!
Daryl Olszewski ~ Pastoral Associate
FEDERAL LEGISLATIVE
ACTION ALERT
Protect Conscience Rights in Health Care:
Retain Conscience Regulation
The US Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS) is inviting public comment on a proposal to rescind
the December 2008 federal regulation that implements
and enforces three federal laws protecting the conscience
rights of health care providers, especially those at risk of
being discriminated against because of their moral or religious
objection to abortion (For background, see:
www.usccb.org/conscienceprotection. This legislation
wants to force doctors, nurses and hospitals to violate
their consciences or leave the profession. The Catholic
community and others must speak out so this will not happen!
All persons are encouraged to submit comments! Health
care professionals — hospital administrators, physicians,
pharmacists, nurses, technicians, and the life — should
submit examples or personal experiences where discrimination
was or is a concern. Please write now urging the
Administration to retain the regulation protecting conscience
rights!
ACTION: An e-mail message can be sent through
the NCHLA Action Center. Comments can also be
submitted electronically by 3-mail to proposedrescission@hhs.gov
or online through
www.Regulations.gov (check—”Select to find
documents” and then “enter” - Rescission Proposal.)
Comments also can be mailed. In all comments, refer
to — Rescission Proposal
Suggested Message: — Please retain the conscience
regulation, and enforce the laws protecting
the right of health care providers to serve patients
without violating their moral and religious
convictions. The government has a special responsibility
to ensure that the conscience rights of
health care providers are fully protected.
